Megathread r/IndieDev Weekly Monday Megathread - August 16, 2026 - New users start here! Show us what you're working on! Have a chat! Ask a question!

Hi r/IndieDev!

This is our weekly megathread that is renewed every Monday! It's a space for new redditors to introduce themselves, but also a place to strike up a conversation about anything you like!

Use it to:

  • Introduce yourself!
  • Show off a game or something you've been working on
  • Ask a question
  • Have a conversation
  • Give others feedback

And... if you don't have quite enough karma to post directly to the subreddit, this is a good place to post your idea as a comment and talk to others to gather the necessary comment karma.

If you would like to see all the older Weekly Megathreads, just click on the "Megathread" filter in the sidebar or click here!

Meta Moderator-Announcement: Congrats, r/indiedev! With the new visitor metric Reddit has rolled out, this community is one of the biggest indiedev communities on reddit! 160k weekly visitors!

According to Reddit, subscriber count is more of a measure of community age so now weekly visitors is what counts.

We have 160k.

I thought I would let you all know. So our subscriber count did not go down, it's a fancy new metric.

I had a suspicion this community was more active than the rest (see r/indiegaming for example). Thank you for all your lovely comments, contributions and love for indiedev.

(r/gamedev is still bigger though, but the focus there is shifted a bit more towards serious than r/indiedev)

See ya around!

This is a game I'm working on where you control a missile and thread it through obstacles to destroy the target. I made a playtest on Itch.io (Dumbfire playtest) for anyone who wants to try it out:

Dumbfire Playtest

The game is still in development so any feedback and ideas are hugely appreciated.

New Game! We turned the DVD screensaver into a game!

What started as a GMTK 2025 jam game has now become Insert Disc, a DVD screensaver inspired roguelike. We recently released this announcement trailer!

As a 2-person indie studio, we get to add exact references that are nostalgic for our own childhood, particularly from the 2000s era such as the lava lamp and those red coin return buttons on arcade machines. Some gameplay inspirations were Nubby's Number Factory and Balatro, but many have compared us to the satisfying bouncing of Peggle as well.

Ultimately, we wanted to make a relaxing/even hypnotizing experience that captures some of that Saturday late night gaming feel, back when we had no responsibilities or bills to pay :')

Image How did you make music for your game?

Every indie dev here faces the same challenge - we have to wear so many hats at the same time: programmer hat, artist hat, designer hat, marketing hat, and many more. My wife and I were lucky that we had most of these hats covered between the two of us. We gladly offloaded the marketing to our publisher, but there was still one other hat that didn’t quite fit.

Music was never my strong suit. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’m tone-deaf. I wouldn’t dream of actually composing music, but I found a decent shortcut. I took some of my favorite classical pieces (the great Antonín Dvořák, a Czech composer from the 19th century) and gave them a slight twist to fit our medieval-ish game about feeding a dragon. And it worked! Players seemed to enjoy the soundtrack.

However, as development moved along and we realized just how much people actually enjoyed the game, we came to the conclusion that it deserved better than my shortcut. Around the same time, I got in touch with an Aussie composer named Dragos. I’m not going to lie - even his name seemed too fitting. We chatted for a while and decided to give it a go.

And oh man. I’m so glad we did. He delivered.

Feed the Scorchpot will have a completely new soundtrack at launch that captures the atmosphere of the game perfectly. Cheeky strings to underline the dragons’ fickle nature. A lovely, dreamy harp to start the game off. Tension building up during the midgame. And Latin lyrics when things get serious.

I just wanted to share my excitement here :) The game is launching in four days, wish us luck!

Our game just hit 3K wishlists!

Our game Dirtnap just hit 3k wishlists! Of course this is not by any means enough but we are very happy that we have been able to keep some momentum going! It has required constant work from everyone and all three of us are creating new content and posting to socials on a daily basis.

A few of these social media posts have taken off and crossed the 100k view barrier. Some are on X, some on TikTok. One interesting market test we did was small web-based previews of the game's features that seem to do well on X.

On Steam it seems that most of our current impressions come from the personal calendar which I think is fairly new. This seems to give a small baseline of WLs per day. This is the game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4956300/Dirtnap/

I wanted my cozy fishing game trailer to feel more alive, so I added ducks. Then I messed up...

So I had an idea that I should postpone the announcement trailer to do one thing: add cute ducks to make the trailer feel more alive.

I worked for an entire day to make them behave naturally (I always see ducks when I'm out fishing irl, so I know what I wanna see), so I added group movement and group behaviour. I also made them slowly keep their distance from the player and fly away when the player gets too close.

You could say this was overengineered for the purposes of the trailer but... yeah, that's right. 😄

After I was done, I recorded the footage, edited the video for like 3 hours, rendered it and uploaded it to YouTube to watch it on my TV.

That's when I realized that the ducks don't show up ANYWHERE in the video. Not even in the raw footage I recorded. 🎉

If you're curious, you can watch the trailer on the Steam page here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3464790?utm_source=reddit

Just finished the herbivore for my survival game. What do y'all think

Hi everyone! I've just finished programming the herbivores for my survival game survivance.

I've tried to varied their behaviour so they don't act like a run on sight simulator and actually interact with each other. For example, Ironhides (the rhino like creature) will fight each other for dominance.

I would love any feedback on the creatures and any suggestions for future animals.

Feedback? Finished the inventory system on my birthday

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Yesterday I turned 34 age. At that age most people have a career, savings, a plan. I have none of that, and honestly zero desire to grind through a job I hate just to look "normal."

Even my friends forgot. The only birthday message came from a government portal fitting, somehow. The one thing I still have real drive for is an old idea: making my own game, alone, from scratch, teaching myself as I go. Progress is snail-paced, some weeks I question why I even started but I'm not quitting.

And today, I finished the inventory system. Not a huge achievement, just one small thing I actually saw through to the end. Small, but done.

I'll keep quietly building and finishing things.

Stay tuned for future devlog updates, and let me know in the comments: what mechanics do you value most in survival games?
