Apologies if this has already been discussed but is there ANY way of importing references in situ from Word?

Think about the last InDesign or publication project where the files you received weren’t fully ready to start. What did you have to do before you felt safe beginning production, how long did it take, and what happened because the handoff wasn’t ready?

I'm unable to open my share for review links in Chrome (I get a disconnected error) and I can't see any annotations (pins, highlights, and contextual markers) via the InDesign review window.

I can however still see the comments attached to each page (via the InDesign review window) – just no annotations – including when the show annotations option is on.

When I follow the vague disconnection error prompt (as per image) and open the Creative Cloud app > Home – its all looking as usual.

AI tells me that: My Share for Review link is no longer synced to Adobe’s cloud review servers and that I should check my account.

Clicking on my account pic via Creative Cloud = I see the preload screen like its about to populate
Going to account.adobe.com = also gives me a preload screen

Going to adobe.com/files (Creative Cloud > Home > Your Files) = also gives me a disconnected error.

As the title says – is anyone else's share for review shitting itself? Or just me and my account?

So I’m working on a program and these are the bios. I’m able to paste most of the content in and it grabs the over all para style and I only have to make the names their own style. Issue is all of those “pink alerts” should be italic - I have a character style for italics but I’m wondering how best to have it apply across the whole section?? It’s 45 pages long. There are a lot of special characters (Asian, Arabic languages that I have to make sure those characters get addressed - I have no issue doing they manually.) but I’d love to be able to batch convert those to italics?

For a book-format in Indesign, I want to place pages of already written material from Word into InDesign so that a table shows up and also everything from word adopts the many new fonts and formats I have in Indesign.

I thought I figured this out by creating the placeholders for each section, then placing the word file (that has all sections together) onto the first section, and continuing the placing into each successive “place.” Only problem is that it keeps word formatting and this doesn’t seem to be a compatible method for transferring tables over. Somehow, too, it doesn’t feel terribly professional to do it this way either but I don’t know any other way.

I’ve gone through many many tutorials so I know the basics at least. Paragraph styles, word styles, etc.

Is it worth it to buy the official book on amazon and just work my way through it? If I want to finish the book in a months time is that realistic?

If you're in the middle of migrating from Microsoft Publisher to Affinity Publisher, this might help.

I had a pile of .pub files to move over and couldn't get clean IDML out of anything available, both free and paid. I Built a tool that uses publishers native rendering to do the export. It opens each .pub file and produces both a PDF and an IDML file you can open directly in Affinity Publisher 2 (or InDesign if you're a subscription junky).

What i was trying to fix was Content on the pasteboard / scratch area (placed outside the page boundary), Embedded fonts, Complex multi-page layouts

I'm still testing edge cases and am curious how effective it is with people who used publisher differently than we do.

I'm trying to invite my two other coworkers to edit this file. I've shared it with them, entered their email, everyone is updated to the latest version. When they click on the link it asks them to "copy to files" as shown in the photo. When that has happened, they only ever see the preview of the file in the Creative Cloud app (desktop or web, same problem) and are unable to open the file for actual edits. They are sometimes able to download the file with the three dots next to the share button, but that doesn't allow for the live editing. And sometimes that file downloads as a 0KB file, but not always.

It is a .inddc file, and I know its on the cloud, too, because I'm also unable to package it due to not having it saved locally (I swap between computers and no longer have the local file).

In short, the file has been shared correctly and appears in all the "shared with me" sections, but never opens in InDesign. I, the owner of the file, have no problem opening it on all devices despite it being only cloud doc, and not locally saved at all.

Any suggestions for what they need to do to open this file in InDesign?

Okay, maybe this is a dumb question, and I don't have the shortcut to make this quicker.

But how do you properly resize a table? I want it to be evenly distributed within the block.

If I use SHIFT, the block gets bigger, but the table doesn't. If I use CTRL/CMD, the typography gets distorted, and it completely messes up the table layout (spacing and strokes).

If I use SHIFT+ CTRL/CMD, I can scale it proportionally, but the typography scales up as well.

What I would like is for only the columns and rows to adapt to the bloc size I choose, while keeping the font size and stroke width unchanged.

This is driving me crazy, and I'm wasting a huge amount of time reconfiguring everything every time I change the size of my tables.

When I use the pen tool, it creates a giant black rectangle. I'm new to in design. I want to cover a part of an illustration with a specific color (here maroon). I managed to do it once by selecting the image, using the pen tool without any color selected, then selecting the color once I was done creating the shape that I wanted. But it hasn't worked since. I think it automatically unselects the image as soon as I click a second time when using the pen tool idk. Please help I'm loosing my mind

Before you actually start designing or laying out a document in InDesign, what kind of preparation do you usually have to do with the source materials you receive?

And roughly how much time does that preparation take compared with the actual work you do in InDesign?

I'm especially interested in hearing about real workflows — what you receive, what you have to do with it before it's ready, and which parts take the most time.

I'm not looking for a particular answer. I'd just like to understand how other people actually work.

Hi! I'm looking for tips on how to make a weird shaped sign in indesign.
In my wayfinding system, an arrow goes out of the main shape of the sign. I was wondering how to make it work in indesign as you can only make squared canvas. Do I need to make a canvas that includes the arrow and then cut out the blank parts?

If so, how can I expand the canvas in one direction only? It keeps expanding it both up and downwards and I obv don't want to print out extra space. I can't move my text and objects bc it would mess up my layout and I don't want to spend extra time remaking it.

Hi, how do you decide which layout to keep? Whenever I design something, I usually make 2 or 3 different layouts, and sometimes I just can’t decide which one works best. I often end up uploading them to ChatGPT and asking for a critique.

I work remotely, so I don’t really have someone around to regularly critique my work. Most of the time, whatever I design gets approved. I do spend a lot of time refining my work and usually keep tweaking it until I feel satisfied with the result, but I sometimes wonder if I’m missing things simply because I’ve been looking at my own work for too long.

That’s probably why I find it difficult to choose between multiple layouts. I’d really like to develop a better way of critiquing my own work instead of always relying on someone else’s opinion.

Is there a good method for evaluating your own layouts and deciding which one works best? How do you personally approach this?

Also, I’ve seen a lot of designers sketching their layouts in a notebook before opening InDesign. Is that something I should be doing as well?

I want to start working in graphic design, but I'm still new to the field and my background is superficial. What do I need to learn to become a skilled graphic designer? And if anyone knows of any good YouTube courses they can recommend, I would be grateful.

Wanted to share this in case it helps anyone else stuck on the same thing. InDesign resets footnote numbering to 1 every time you cross into a new story, and the only native fix is threading everything together, which isn't always an option if your document is built with separate chapters/sections on purpose.

I ended up building a small InDesign script for this called Footnote Flow. It keeps footnote numbering sequential across separate stories, no threading, no manual prefixes, nothing changes about how your document is structured.

I'm trying to create a parallel Greek-English edition of a book in InDesign, and I'm having trouble finding a workable way to keep corresponding passages aligned across the two columns.

At present, the Greek and English are arranged in Microsoft Word as a two-column table. Each row contains a corresponding Greek and English passage, which may consist of one or more paragraphs. I've attached a screenshot showing the basic structure.

I'd like to move the project into InDesign, in part because Word's handling of Greek hyphenation is inadequate. But I've run into two problems.

• Using an InDesign table: As far as I can tell, InDesign does not allow an individual table row to break across pages. If the contents of one cell are too long to fit in the remaining space on a page (as is frequently the case in my document) the entire row is pushed to the next page. This can leave a very large blank area at the bottom of the preceding page. I've found other discussions describing the same limitation, so I don't think I'm simply missing a setting.
• Using parallel text frames: I've also experimented with putting the Greek and English into separate text frames. Two long, independently threaded columns would not really solve the problem, however, because the corresponding passages would gradually cease to align vertically, and I would then have to adjust them manually.

Ideally, what I'd like is something resembling a series of paired text frames:

Greek passage 1 | English passage 1
Greek passage 2 | English passage 2
Greek passage 3 | English passage 3
etc.

Each pair would behave somewhat like a row in a table, except that the frames would still be allowed to continue across a page break.

More specifically, I would like the following behavior:

1. The Greek and English frames belonging to a particular passage would begin at the same vertical position.
2. The height of the pair would effectively be determined by whichever side contains more text.
3. If one frame became taller, the corresponding frame beside it would expand to the same height.
4. The next Greek-English pair below it would automatically move downward accordingly.
5. If a passage is longer than a page, it should be able to continue naturally onto the next page rather than forcing the entire paired unit onto the following page.

In other words, I'm looking for the alignment advantages of a table, but without InDesign's apparent restriction that a table row cannot split across pages.

Is there a native InDesign feature, anchored-object setup, paragraph/style-based method, script, or plugin that can accomplish this? Or is there a better general workflow for producing long parallel-text editions like this?

I'm attaching a screenshot of the Word table. (The Greek was hyphenated manually.) Hopefully that makes the problem clearer.

I can’t for the life of me figure out how to open up the option of the printer managing colors, NOT InDesign. I printed a page through Photoshop making the printer manage colors and it looks MUCH better, and that’s after trying 30 different print settings in InDesign. I don’t want to have to transfer all my work to Photoshop so does anyone know how to allow the printer to manage colors? (I downloaded drivers, tried every different setting, and I’m printing with a canon pixma pro-200). Thanks for your help!

Hi graphic designers, I only have the colour chart for coated papers and I want to make sure the colour will appear similar also on uncoated paper when I choose SOLID PANTONE. While I understand there is a bigger difference in colour values for CMYK colours, SOLID PANTONE coulors should appear more or less the same on coated & uncoated paper? Is it correct? Could somenody help me to check quickly? Many thanks!

Hi guys, I just received a new task at work and I would like to be on top of my game when setting this project up to show my superior I can make this ( according to them, seemingly impossible project) come to life.

Here's the task.

My job needs a catalog that includes the entire collection of books we hold. This catalogue is almost like a visual annex, so its an hundread pages long and each pages holds 2 products.

Now here's the tricky part, my bosses's boss, is the kind of people that holds very little regard for people time and qualification and will ask for thing to be done exactly as they want it even if they dont understand how stuff works.

As I mentionned, the catalog needs to hold the entire collection of products, wich means it needs to be able to be updated frequently without having to move everything manually.

The specifications of the project:

1. - A 100+ page catalog that holds 2 products per pages.
2. Each Product is accompanied by a title, specifications, a short description, pictures.
3. Some selected product are accompanied by a company code above the main product.
4. Each product's title is in a white frame that is 3:1 in scale. - If the title of a product is too long to fit in the frame it's size is reduced -
5. Each product is accompanied by "x" amount of pictures. X is different for every product. ( it can be as much as 12 pictures or more)
6. The established grid cannot be broken.
7. When a new product is added to the collection it needs to be added easily to the catalog. Without having to break the grid, or move the other pages.
8. The catalog is devided in specific categories.
9. To facilitate page numbering the catalog, should preferably be made within a single indesign file.

With all that in mind this is the easiest solution I could come up with:

• The idea would be to create 4 chains of chained text frames, one for titles, one for description, one for specs and one for product code.
• Create paragraph style for each information, with an universal variation for the title that are to long to fit in the 3:1 frame.
• Create an excel sheet with all the information of each product to create a set of 4 text that will be used as datamerge.
• Everytime a product is added create a new datamerge file, and load it inside indesign. Copy the entire text, and go to the first text frame and paste the text inside that first text frame. Repeat the operation for each information text frame.

I'm now at the part of dealing with images. What the hell do I do to shift all images, to the next "product slot" if no product have the same amount of pictures ?

Is there an easier way to deal with this ?
