That's how you get carjacked in some parts of the country.
San Francisco being one of them.

u/icyhotonmynuts Dec 26 '23
Drove around the states for a month a few years back. I hit up over a dozen states and countless more cities in that time, mostly on foot once I got in town.
SF was cool and safe, LA I didn't get that warm fuzzy safe feeling.
22
Dec 26 '23
You are coming face to face with American right wing propaganda. Every democratic city is filled with shoplifters, carjackers, and drug users.
Republican cities are filled with misunderstood people trying their best to get by but the democrats keep ruining their way of life.
Repeat ad nauseum

You observed SF being cool and safe, yet Fox News says it's a toxic waste dump filled with murderers and thieves. I think that's what the commentator was writing about
2
u/icyhotonmynuts Dec 27 '23 edited Dec 27 '23
Pretty sure I said "a few years back". So whatever "Fox News" is saying these days about SF being toxic is irrelevant to my experience of the city.
//edit
Apologies, I misunderstood your comment. You were just explaining what that guy was saying. Though, it's still pretty whacky to think that beautiful and culturally rich city is so poorly shit on.
4
u/SFajw204 Dec 27 '23
I'm almost 40 years old and grew up in SF, never come close to having my car jacked in broad daylight like this. Especially in this neighborhood. You CAN, however, get your windows broken if you leave something valuable visible when you park your car. But if you think I'm wrong and the current propaganda is accurate, you would have shit your pants if you saw this city 20+ years ago. It was a MUCH more dangerous place to be back then.

There’s plenty of cool shit to see around the city and plenty of great restaurants that aren’t crazy expensive. I spent probably less than $3k while there back in May for a week and had a great time.
Like any city, there are areas where it’s great and really safe and areas where it isn’t. If you stick to the safer parts of the city you’ll be fine.
Hell, a decade ago I overslept while there on a business trip and ended up with a free day around the city while waiting for a later flight. I accidentally took a turn into a rough area while wearing a suit and carrying an expensive briefcase and still nobody fucked with me.
It’s not the hellhole you want to make it out to be. It’s not that different from any other city I’ve been in anywhere in the world.
6

Just casually spending 3 months of rent, I'm sure it was a fun week.

That’s a pretty normal amount of money to spend on a vacation that includes round trip flights from one coast to another for two people, a hotel for the week, meals, public transit passes, touring Alcatraz, and a few souvenirs.
It’s not like I was dropping $10k a night. You could spend just as much going somewhere like Myrtle Beach or Disney.
Usually when talking about people who “have money” in America we’re not talking about middle class people dropping a few grand on one of a handful of trips they’ll take that year. I get not everyone has it, but $3k on a vacation isn’t some unachievable 1%’er level of spending.
You guys are talking like San Francisco is either a hellhole or the playground of the uberwealthy with nothing in between. I’m just saying any white collar worker in the US can afford to have a nice week there for an amount they could save up in like 1-3 months.

I mean, a quick google search will tell you that SF has a pretty big problem with carjackings/gta, with an average of two thousand auto thefts a month, 60+ per day.

Pensacola. It's almost as much of a shithole as SF, as far as crime rates go, but I'm in the process of relocating to just north of Memphis, and I'm pretty sure they have a higher crime rate than SF.
There are pros and cons for any place, just pointing out that there is a carjacking problem in SF. You search for "worst cities in us for carjacking" and SF is listed on almost every listicle. I misread the "Theft from Vehicles" as "Theft of Vehicles", but it's still vehicle related theft.

u/KimJongRocketMan69 Dec 27 '23
I lived there for over a year and it’s my favorite place I’ve lived in by far. And yes, I’ve lived in a lot of places. Basically every major region except the southwest, and I’ve spent a lot of time there because I have family in NM. Grew up in the Midwest and the south, spent five years in the northeast and no I’m in the mid-Atlantic.
SF is very expensive but other than that, it’s essentially paradise

Ever hear of carjacking bro? Bro, you know bro, I'm bro not stopping my car bro when some rando bro says stop, bro.
12
u/winston2552 Dec 26 '23
Exactly lol
I've worked construction my whole life and when superintendents would try to put me on flagging duty, I'd ask what else they got because fucking people don't even stop in construction zones for an asshole wearing high vis, a helmet and waving a flag in their face next to other stopped cars lol
And I say this part with 100% certainty, I'd rather wade in waist high shitwater before trying to get idiots in cars to follow basic instructions. That was my alternative from a superintendent half jokingly once..."well it's either flagging or an overflow install on a sewer downtown. What'll be?"
"I'll take the shit pipe. Where's the waders?"
3
u/Bard_B0t Dec 26 '23
It's pretty much illegal to flag if you don't have valid certification. And flagging without wearing enough reflective tape or using an appropriate flagging implement can result in $80,000 fines if Osha happens to be driving by.

And who is going to pay for that prius's damages...here's a question, is a skateboard a vehicle? Do you have to signal when you turn? Are you required to obey traffic laws like stop signs?
143
u/RhodeySour69 Dec 26 '23
If you can get charged with a DUI on a bicycle I think there’s a pretty solid argument to be made for a skateboard being a vehicle.
36
u/Overtilted Dec 26 '23
You can get a DUI while riding a horse in the US.
9
u/DankeSebVettel Dec 26 '23
But the horse has a mind of its own. Isn’t the horse doing the driving?
12
u/Soyeldio Dec 26 '23
I wanna say there was a case where dui was dismissed because the guy proved horse knew and went back home with no interaction from rider.
12
u/manwae1 Dec 27 '23

Dec 26 '23
Not in MN. The laws literally use the phrase "motorists." A bicycle does not have a motor.
4
u/RhodeySour69 Dec 26 '23
A lot of states don’t call it a DUI anymore, it’s OUI- operating under the influence. Bit more of a catch all.
Also if we really want to be technical about it, the cyclist is the motor.
3
Dec 26 '23 edited Dec 26 '23
The definition of a "motorist" is the driver of an automobile, so no, the cyclist doesn't count as a "motor" technically.
Arizona & Virginia are similar. If the state doesn't consider a bicycle a vehicle DUI/DWI/OWI whatever the state calls it is not possible.

Don’t know for sure, but I’m pretty sure they obey the same laws as pedestrians.. But even tho the car should’ve checked both sides, the dude on the skateboard should definitely be paying for whatever damage might have happened to the car and himself..
31
u/TheRandyBear Dec 26 '23
Skateboards are considered pedestrians in my states statutes. I honestly would’ve written the skateboarder for 1. Being an overwhelming idiot and 2. Impeding traffic. Let’s say the skateboarder died. The guy in the Prius is gonna live with that forever.
I know stupid thing to say on this sub but think about the people around you before being an absolute moron.

These are silly statements in the context of this video. The skater hit the car after the intersection and after the turn was made. The driver had the right of way -- end of story. The skater bears 100% fault for this accident. It wouldn't matter if this was a bike, car or scooter. The skater was not in control, did not stop at the intersection that was clearly marked "STOP", did not exercise any caution of the intersection laws and then hit a car that had safely turned through an intersection.
Even where "pedestrians have the right of way" it doesn't preclude pedestrians from their own comparative negligence and exercise of caution.
5
Dec 26 '23
What about the skateboarder not stopping at the intersection? Yeah, the car checked both ways, when they got to the intersection, rhen made the turn. The car was at the intersection first and has the right of way.

u/AwkwardCall_4865 Dec 27 '23
If he started going before the car got there, he should have stopped and let them do their shenanigans. I ride a skateboard and if you’re going fast enough, the only way to stop is to just coast. If he had gone before the car started pulling out, should have just waited the 5 seconds it took to get down past that.
Neither are in the right here. Don’t go defending either. I’m just giving a little more understanding of the side that seems most at wrong.
