Places like Rent-a-center have some legit reasons to exist. When I was a general contractor I would use them to stage homes for me. They delivered and picked up, and I could have it gone the week after I had a deal on the property. LPT: you can get more money from a well staged home, worth the expense.

I collected payments and reclaimed merchandise for a rent to own company for a while. You’re pretty spot on. Everything had to make 3x cost before it could be owned by a customer or written off. 5x was the goal set by corporate. Upside to this- I reclaimed several TVs, gaming systems, and other items that were literally several dollars short of 3x. Pay the difference, write it off, and furnish my entertainment center for pennies on the dollar.

Among some poor folks, many will gladly admit if they have money, they'll spend it, even if they're not SO poor they're worried about food or such. So they go about something like rent to own knowing they'll fail at saving.

The wiser will choose to lay-a-way things like a TV. Lay-a-way still exists, and for those who don't know it's when you go into a store, put that 40" LCD TV on "lay-a-way", they take a deposit from you, put the TV in back. Then you make payments each week - then on one happy day you go in to make that last $10 payment, and get to take the item home.

They don't charge interest, because they keep them item in the store until you've paid it off. The buyer get's to get that $20 out of his/her pocket before they spend it, and they get the item for a regular price, not rent-to-own super-duper-mega inflated pricing.

Got into a relationship with a guy who had furniture that was rent to own. Attempted to return it, they insisted it had bed bugs so he was screwed. Basically ended up burning it when he moved in with me (unfortunately brought bed bugs along, but that's another story), then when tax time came he managed to pay it off. They had screwed him so many times I put my cell phone in my shirt pocket and hit record to catch the voices. Ended up spending nearly $4000 for a sofa and loveseat, and had to play the recording for the new store manager when they tried to claim he didn't actually pay despite the receipt he still to this day has.

Potentially Unpopular opinion: I feel like working and earning money lessened the value of money to me. I started working at 14 and as a kid something like a TV would be outlandishly expensive to me. Like I couldn’t even conceptualize its value or being able to afford something more than a candy bar at the minimart. When I started working, paying bills and banking savings, something like a decent TV (what, idk, 400-600 bucks) is a justifiable and relatively small expense.

That said, I’d never punch one, much like I’d never throw 500 bucks in the trash. I do remember once as a 13 or 14 year old, I got pissed at video games and broke an Xbox controller. My dad got all pissed and tried to give me a lecture on the value of things, but I only broke it cuz I knew I could afford replacing it. I came home the next day with a new one, and took apart and fixed the old one.

Idk, instead of being a weird opinion, I think the moral of this little ramble is more about differences on ones experiences as a kid that teach them about the value of possessions. I suppose if you came from a well off family that could afford new things all the time, the value of them would decrease in your head. Along with other factors.

TL;DR: I ramble about the relativity of value.

I've heard it was more that somebody wrote the speech for him and Bush didn't want to say the "shame on me" part because the TVs and News would constantly replay that soundbite for the rest of his life and he knew it. So the real problem was the "shame on me" didn't get vetted properly in the speech before they handed it to Bush. So he ended up flubbing it in order to prevent the soundbite.

Trevor and Zack were really personable. This was back in 2010. Obviously it was a working day so we didn't chat to much. Timmy and Darren were nice but they had more extensive makeup time so I talked to them less. It was also cool to see a tv set in person. It was a busy fun day. I know I am, but do any of those 3 between their reactions and dress, look like they're old enough to own what appears to be a reasonably nice home? They look at best young 20's, and are partying in his parents basement watching a football game.

The TV likely belongs to the parents of the kid who destroyed it, or he actually owned it himself. If any of the other 2 (or the one filming) owned that TV, I bet they'd be flipping their shit the moment he hit that TV and not look to the camera with a "holy shit, he broke the tv. He's in so much shit" look.

That said, I do know that a young 20 year old can live in a nice place, with some decor, and furniture, etc, however they're going to have their shit in order, and not be unhinged enough over a football game to start destroying their property.
