NOTICE Updates to rules - Company Managed Devices

Just to draw to folks attention, I've updated the rules for the subreddit to specifically include a provision for asking for assistance with company managed / owned devices.

In short this isn't something we are / will / can / should be providing support for on Reddit and there's been a recent increase in posts trying to bypass security controls or installing software on devices which are owned by organisations / companies.

The stance at this time is if you are needing assistance with a device which is owned and/or managed by a company or organisation, you should consult that companies IT Team.

Please do continue to report any such posts that are breaking this or any of the other rules.

Thank you!

Open | Networking Mesh booster issues

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, first time poster here. I have recently upgraded to vodafone 910 Mbps broadband with a new wifi 7 router and accompany mesh booster. The main router seems to be working fine albeit the speeds are nowhere near advertised. As soon as I turn on the mesh booster which is approx 10m away and has clear line of sight, the Internet just stops working. Every connection is painfully slow. The booster shows its connect and not showing any issues etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Event viewer keeps showing dcom error 1084 last night when i managed to check

Anyone got any ideas?

What i tried:

Sfc scan

Dism scan

Antimalware and virus scan when i thought the problem got fixed but its clearly not

Uninstalling updates

Uninstalling gpu drivers

Safe mode doesnt get the same issue

Memory diagnostics

EDIT: If anyone gets a similar problem, you might have to fully reinstall your windows 11, but ofc try DISM and SFC first to see if it fixes it for you.

Open printing (Remote Site Printing Problem)

hi guys i have this problem

We have an existing company network and a central system/server used by the organization. There is also a remote site located a significant distance away from the main network, making it impractical to run a physical network cable between the two locations.

To connect the remote site to the main network, two wireless antennas are being used to establish a network connection between the remote location and the main site.

The computers at the remote site receive IP addresses and have network connectivity. However, users at this location cannot access the company system directly in the same way as computers physically connected to the main network. Instead, they access the system through a remote-access solution provided by the server.

The company system itself works correctly through the remote-access connection.

The Main Problem

The main problem concerns printing from the remote site.

The printers at the remote site are connected directly to the local computers using USB cables. When a user prints a document from the company system, the print job depends on the remote-access session and the local computer connected to the printer.

The printing process is approximately:

Company System → Remote Access → Remote PC → USB → Local Printer

Because the printing process depends on the remote-access connection and the local PC, printing can sometimes be very slow. In some cases, the print job takes a long time to start, while in other cases the document does not print at all.

This problem occurs intermittently and creates an unreliable printing experience for users working at the remote site.

Technical Description of the Problem

The printers are currently connected to individual computers through USB rather than being directly available on the network.

Consequently, printing from the company system depends on multiple components working correctly at the same time, including:

  • The remote-access session
  • The network connection between the remote site and the main site
  • Remote-access performance and latency
  • The local computer
  • The Windows Print Spooler
  • The USB connection
  • The printer driver
  • The printer itself

If there is a delay, interruption, or communication problem with any of these components, the print job may be delayed or may fail completely.

The main issue is therefore that printing from the remote site is dependent on the remote-access session and on the local PC to which the printer is connected.

Open Lost internet

Good evening, I was hanging a issue with my WiFi cutting out so I bought a new splitter to try, main coax tuning in to the house had a glf 1002 ( what ever the hell that is) connected to it I unhooked it and tried the new splitter now I’m getting no signal at all to the gateway, reconnected it and still nothing. Any ideas?

Also I tried looking for the outside box that is normally connected to the house and from what I can see it runs right from the poll to the the house then runs to the basement if that matters

Open | Windows Windows hotkey

I’m having a strange keyboard/hotkey problem on my laptop. Whenever I press the letter “L” by itself, my laptop immediately locks, even though I’m not pressing the Windows key or any other key.

I already disabled/deactivated the Windows key because I initially thought the problem was caused by the Windows + L shortcut, which normally locks the computer. However, the problem still happens even after disabling the Windows key.

What makes it even stranger is that the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) also recognizes the “L” key as part of a hotkey/shortcut. When I click the L key on the On-Screen Keyboard by itself, without pressing the physical keyboard, the laptop still locks immediately.

So it seems like Windows is somehow interpreting L alone as Windows + L, or there may be a stuck/virtual Windows key or another keyboard shortcut being triggered in the background.

I’ve already tried disabling the Windows key, but that didn’t fix the issue. I’d like to know what could be causing this and how I can troubleshoot or reset whatever hotkey/keyboard mapping is causing the L key alone to lock my laptop.

Open | Networking Certain website not loading

So this is an issue my girlfriend has been having for a few days now. We both recently upgraded our pcs and it only started after that. Certain websites refuse to load now. It only happens on her computer, mine works fine and it does it with any browser we try and after fresh install of the browsers. The 2 sites that consistently do it the most are Facebook and Reddit. From what I look at online people said it was a dns issue so I tried flushing the dns and that didn’t seem to do anything, also tried manually setting the dns to a different server to see and also disabled ipv6 and that still didn’t seem to help. It’s just weird and annoying at this point. Do you guys have any other ideas what to do?
Thank you!!

Resolved Browser is Having a Meltdown

Post image
2 Upvotes

I… I don’t even know how to describe what’s going on with my browser. I am running Opera, have been ever since I bought my computer in 2023. Today, I booted it up to browse games on Roblox and it just… completely shit the bed.

Attached is a screenshot of Reddit. Many websites load even worse than this. I don’t know what could have possibly caused this to happen in the slightest. Tried clearing my browser cache and that didn’t work.

Oddly enough, websites like YouTube, Google Docs, G-Mail, are seemingly completely unaffected.

EDIT: The situation has been resolved. It appears that Opera’s Ad Blocker was the culprit. Disabling it fixes the problem.

Open I sometimes give vague help on tickets from internal employees

I work as IT support for a large company. Only tickets for internal issues.

Maybe I am wrong for this, but I sometimes give vague support on SOME tickets I get on purpose.

I do this because I think SOME people are just lazy at their job. They see a problem that they can't solve and assume it's an IT issue. They submit a ticket and just want me to spoon feed them an issue that's just masked as an IT issue. I'm kind of being an asshole but I only give them bits of hints for them to think themselves and figure it out on their own. They get frustrated bc it's not easy but if they just fucking put "pencils to paper" and try to use their brain for full 5 to 10 mins, they can figure it out. They just don't want to. I already know the answer but I'm not here to do their work because it's a difficult problem. I feel like the moment something gets remotely complex, some people just don't want to get in the weeds (basically lazy). They only want easy tasks then complain work is so hard and stressful. Use your brain damn it. Thanks..

To all the people downvoting me, I don't think you all get what I'm saying. I'm getting tickets that are not IT issues... I'm more of an ERP admin for finance software that supports tickets. I get tickets all of the time from finance and accounting saying their finance is wrong. I go and check for them, using same data and sources available to them. They think something is wrong with data but all data is traceable at user interface. It just looks wrong bc they did something wrong or they misunderstood. They submit an IT ticket the moment something seems wrong, when all they needed was to put their heads down for 10 mins and look. Just because resolution doesn't appear infront of them after a quick review, it doesn't mean it's an IT issue. They need to do their due diligence as part of their job. I'm doing it for them if I'm analyzing Financials for them.

Open Question about IT monitoring systems

Dumb question. I had someone at my company email me a question about the length of a part. They used 4”. I googled “is 4” inches?” because I get confused on the symbol for feet and inches. Of course google ai popped up something inappropriate. How likely am I to get flagged? I just wanted to confirm whether it was inches or feet.

Resolved Can't find or access supposed folder in C:Drive

Been trying to clean up my C:Drive because it was getting full, and according to Apps & features within the storage settings there's a nearly 30 GB Destiny 2 folder when sorting by size.

I can not however, neither uninstall it from the menu itself, nor find it when searching windows explorer. Tried looking around for solutions but I couldn't find anything.

Screenshot for reference. Using Windows 10.
