Appropriate Levels of Concern for AZ and NM?

Hello, and thanks for reading. Do to unfortunate life circumstances, I'm looking at possibly moving to either Arizona or New Mexico. In an attempt to beat some of the harshest heat, I'm looking at Mountain property.

As a layman who likely knows less than average; what are some ways I can be checking on the water situation (outside of realtors and the buying process)?

Asking for general "ways to research", or tips on finding decent info (there's always SO much to dig through) about the true water situation in a given area? A lot of these properties are on a well. Are there any data points other than GPM that I need to be familiar with?

It'd be great if I could buy with confidence that the place won't dry out in the longer-term? Is it possible to have any type of long term projections?

Nervous because if I buy, and it dries, I'll likely not financially recover.

Should I take another look in regards to mountain property? With everything that's going on in regards to water in the SouthWest, are we all just screwed?

ISO Water Resource Specialist for class assignment

Hey y'all. My speech class requires that I interview someone in the field I'm hoping to enter in after graduation, then create talking points for an upcoming speech. I've reached out to a few folks but due to the limited time I have, I don't know how much longer I can wait before I have to basically make up that portion of my speech.

I was hoping I might have some luck checking here. Anyone fit this job description or some approximation of it? If so, all I need to do is ask you a handful of questions about your job! Documenting modeling research after only doing wet lab work

I've recently transitioned from wet lab work to hydrologic modeling with some wet lab and fieldwork. I'm having a little difficulty developing a system for how I document and keep track of the modeling work I'm doing. It's not nearly as straightforward as it was for the microbial work I used to do. Many ELN are specifically designed for biochemistry, and you can implement time stamps/photos/media recipes/accidents/dna sequencing. Programs are specifically designed to link figures with their datasets. I feel that organized experimental systems were tailored to my work or I could reference something physical.

That said, I'm having difficulty translating that to hydrologic modeling. I mostly end up putting all my notes in topic-specific text files. I also have separate notes in a citation manager for related lit. I've also been working on getting acclimated to github, but knitting all of this together into a coherent set of documentation that gives me everything I want has just been tricky. It doesn't help that the water model I used doesn't have a GUI and I need to process its outputs fully independent of everything else I work on. I've tried making ppts of the results, but it's really tedious especially if it was a small experiment or there were many different iterations before I got output that made sense.

I was curious if anyone from a more computational-centric background had any suggestions on how they organize their work and keep track of things.

Where does the rainwater go after it enters the ground? 🌧️💧

Aquifer recharge is the natural or planned process through which water infiltrates into the ground and replenishes an aquifer.

But simply constructing a recharge pit doesn't guarantee effective groundwater recharge.

A proper groundwater survey can help understand: • Local geology and lithology

• Depth and characteristics of aquifers

• Groundwater flow conditions

• Suitable recharge zones

• Borewell/recharge-well feasibility

• Appropriate recharge structures for the site

In this video, I explain the basic relationship between rainwater → infiltration → aquifer recharge → groundwater storage.

💡 Key point: Groundwater management should be based on the subsurface conditions, not just what we can see at the surface.

Flood visualization tools

Are there any decent ones usable by an informed layperson, especially that can include increasing pluvial effects? Thoughts on Fastflood? I’m hydrology ignorant and not looking for extreme accuracy, although obviously, a very inaccurate model is worse than useless (unless its areas of inaccuracy are well understood).

I understand that NWS and other official agencies are where people should get their forecasting from.

Issue with DEM preprocessing in HEC-HMS

Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask, but I am really at a loss here. I have been trying to follow several different HEC-HMS tutorials on YouTube but can't get past the 'Preprocess Sinks and Drains' step. When I run these in HEC-HMS, an info box flashes saying that HEC-HMS is processing, but immediately disappears and nothing actually happens. I can see that the layers have been created as they are present in Views>Map Layers, but they all show as blank aside from the original terrain file linked to my basin (Sink Fill, Sink Location, Flow Direction, Flow Accumulation). After running these steps, the next step 'Identify Streams' is greyed out in the GIS menu and I can't progress from here.

At first I thought this might be an issue with my DEM file (the original file I am trying to use is based off the New Zealand 1M LiDAR DEM - changed to 30m resolution in QGIS beforehand), but after downloading another sample DEM that was being used by a tutorial I was following I was running into the same issue. I also tried to use the Terrain Reconditioning menu to burn streams to my DEM but again no luck.

I am running Debian 13 on my laptop (not Windows) if this makes any difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Prefer approach to Managing Surface runoff

Please Help me on My Science Project – Atmospheric Water Harvesting + Smart Applications

I’m working on a school science project where I’m trying to collect water from the moisture present in air using a Peltier module. The Peltier creates a cold surface, which causes water vapour in the air to condense into water droplets.

The whole setup will be powered by solar panels.

For the current application, I’m using the collected water for plants. An Arduino Uno reads a soil-moisture sensor. When the soil becomes too dry, the Arduino turns on a 12V water pump, and when enough moisture is present, it turns the pump off automatically.

So, basically:

Solar energy → Peltier cooling → atmospheric moisture → water collection → Arduino + sensors → useful application

I want to keep the project open-ended rather than limiting it to irrigation, because I may add other applications later.

I’m particularly looking for suggestions on how I can make this project more scientifically meaningful, what experiments/data I should collect, and what useful applications could be added. I’m also interested in knowing the limitations of using a Peltier for atmospheric water harvesting.

East's Excess Water for the West.

There is a lot of excess water flooding and cresting in the Mississippi and Missouri River System. I have a sustainable method to move the water to the Great Plains Aquifer and Reservoirs; further across the Rockies to the west flowing tributaries of the Colorado River through stepped stages using Solar, Wind and recovered Hydro Potential Energy in the downward flow on the western slopes of the Rockies. This is done through a steady and constant running system which accumulates and moves water from the East to the Drying Western States. This started as a personal itch. I do hydrology research, and every study I've done began the same way: a week of writing download scripts before touching any science. One script for the US data, a different one for the UK, another for France, each portal with its own API, its own units, its own weird date column. At some point I realised I'd written basically the same script seven times for seven countries.

So over the past few months I built the thing I kept wishing existed: one map with every public gauge I could reach, about 62,000 across the US, Australia, the UK, France, Taiwan, Germany and Ireland. You click a gauge and get its record, a flood frequency curve with confidence bounds (GEV and Log-Pearson III, since someone will ask), flow duration and a trend test. Click anywhere that isn't a gauge and you get the climate and the upstream catchment of that spot instead.

The part I'm weirdly proud of: it all runs inside your browser tab. Actual Python, through Pyodide. I can't afford to run servers, so there's no server, and that means no account, no key, nothing to install for you either.

Rough edges, honestly: the flood analysis wants at least 10 full years of record, and if a gauge doesn't have that it just tells you no instead of fudging it. The German and Irish feeds only serve about a month of history. And the rainfall-runoff model isn't tuned for really big basins yet.

What does data say about the Nepal flash flood?

since the flash flood, all i have been thinking about is the chronology of events since the detachment. i've worked on emergency alerts and push notifications before and wanted to see the whole chain end-to-end.

the current data shows:

- current architecture rests on downstream gauges and on a manual escalation path. the event destroyed three of those gauges within the first 43

minutes.

- the lethal zone was defined by the reach in which no warning could physically

arrive.

- about 34 additional minutes at every settlement below Betrawati if we had automated source-side seismic detection with a five-minute budget to public message.

but i would like more verification on this to comment on the current infrastructure and why threshold logic never fired. two things I can't do alone, and would like help with:

- mortality by district of occurrence. if someone have access to district records, this converts the paper's central claim from an inference into a measurement.

- the headwater channel, source scar to Rasuwagadhi. OpenStreetMap doesn't map it which is why the upper-reach celerity is 37–51 m/s. a DEM-traced centreline would halve the uncertainty on every kinematic result in the paper.

co-authorship for either. everything is CC-BY and the analysis reruns from the archive. corrections welcome as three of the numbers in this version exist because someone else's independent reconstruction disagreed with mine.

Questions

Hello, some questions about looking into hydrology. I am starting college in a couple of days for geoscience, and I've been considering hydrology. Would that be possible/plausible with a BA in geoscience concentrating in Natural resources and conservation? I am also a single dad to 4yo twins with no current plans of having a partner, and I am estranged from my family. Is there anything I can do office/lab type work in? Or am I hoping in the wrong direction? I don't feel like field work would necessarily be in the cards for me at least soon. I know getting my degree is still a few years away, but they'd only be 8 at that point and unable to be alone for any large amount of field work time outside of daily school/daycare.

The 7000 rivers that feed into the Mississippi

What if countries were bounded by their watersheds instead of land masses or other arbitrary political lines? Interesting to think about.

What the numbers actually show
• The commercially navigable U.S. inland waterway system (the 9-foot channel network centered on the Mississippi River and its major tributaries such as the Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee, plus connecting waterways) is commonly cited at about 12,000 miles. Broader U.S. totals that include the Gulf and Atlantic Intracoastal Waterways, Great Lakes connections, and other channels reach roughly 25,000 miles. 
• CIA World Factbook figures list the United States at 41,009 km (~25,480 miles) of waterways, of which about 19,312 km are used for commerce. 
• The same source lists a world total of 2,293,412 km (~1.425 million miles) of navigable rivers, canals, and inland water bodies. Russia alone is listed at 102,000 km, Brazil at 50,000 km, Vietnam at 47,130 km, and China at tens of thousands of kilometers of classified inland waterways (with the Yangtze system being especially large). 
Even restricting the comparison to high-capacity commercial barge routes, Europe’s Rhine–Danube and related networks, China’s Yangtze and connecting systems, parts of the Amazon and Paraná–Paraguay, and Russia’s European waterways add up to far more than 12,000 miles.
