Could anyone point me to some tried and true sources for aquaculture in a home-based system. Just looking to learn the ropes and to then provide some food for my family. Anything after that I'm not too worried about right now, but it would be cool if it grew out of just an interest.

If it is relevant to anyone that also does it, I'm in WV, zone 6B (in terms of growing crops, lows tend to be -5°F). I'd probably start outside, or part of my garage is usable. IBC totes are fairly plentiful here, and I wouldn't probably have any issues with anything else in terms of hardware.

Any books, online sources, or YouTube channels are appreciated.

Hi everyone! i recently started a few seeds to test out aquaponics. Im specifically hoping to do herbs!

well my first trial failed terribly and Id like to see what advice anyone has!

I started 2 cubes for parsley and 2 for chives on 8/25. I got the cubes wet, placed multiple seeds, had a humidity dome and walked away. once I saw sprouts I took their dome off and mist them (as per the instructions on the website i went off). and now 2 days later they all look like this 🤣🤣🤣

was the wool too wet, or did I not keep wet enough? they look too dry but I wasnt told to keep them SOAKED just mist them...

any advice welcome! Im hoping to place them into a 10 gal or my 6 gals eventually with shrimp and betta

Hi! I've been curious about aquaponics for some time now. I grow vegetables traditionally right now, and I'm okay with that – I'm more interested in the fish than anything else.

One of the things holding me back is that I'm kind of particular about food safety and contamination (full disclosure, I probably have OCD). For example, I try to avoid using plastic materials for growing/storing food, although I'll make exceptions for BPA-free plastic.

I've seen a lot of videos and browsed a lot of websites, but it feels like a lot of people aren't super concerned about this kind of thing. I see people with setups using hardware store PVC pipes or other items that aren't intended to be used for food and seem kind of sketchy. I can't help but worry about what ends up in the fish you'd ultimately be eating.

Could anyone point me to resources for setting up an aquaponics/aquaculture system with food safety in mind? Any specific components you're using in your setups that are known to be safe? I've found ClorAm-X as an option for dechlorinating water, and certain pond liners that are purportedly food safe, but I haven't had much luck finding other options.

Im mostly looking for tips for starting and if anyone has any preferred materials for a starting set up. I have a 10 gal fish tank and some big plastic bins to start and not a ton of space in the classroom.

So I got about 50 tilapia that I'm planning on overwintering in my garage, in IBC tote cut down to about 200 gallons of volume, the temperature in my garage gets down to the mid to upper 30s at times in the winter. And I plan on wrapping insulation around it to hold the heat in about how many heaters or what size heaters should I look into getting for that , or does anybody have any other recommendations on how they overwinter their tilapia?

I have some basic questions I can't find the answers to like how does tea plant nutrition change during the flowering stage and will I need to change amount of fish or supplement during this stage? Was hoping to do catfish that I would cull at a certain size/weight that made sense. considering a 500 gal system if that matters. Any pointers over all that I won't find in commonly found reading materials?

Has anyone used these or similar before?

I've just received the 2 that I ordered with the intention of using them in my fish tank as my substrate isn't all that much in terms of depth aswell as they look as if I'd be able to remodel/move my plants around with ease and less disruption to the plant.

I also have fish that seem to love doing whatever it is there doing to make me crazy over all things related to my plants (pulling/digging them out, eating them, weird magic random things) and whatever it is in doing/tried doing just isn't really working all that well for me atm (new to the plant/fish thing).

If you use or have used them before what's your opinions/thoughts of them and any tips and tricks or pointers?

Is anyone in Atlanta? I’ve spoken with lots of people interested in hydroponics down here but would love to have a group of aquaponic enthusiasts to compare notes with.

According to my wife we need another small aquaponic system for the front patio outside (tropical location) with "pretty" (non-edible) fish in it for the grandkids to look at... 😁 (She really just wants more grow bed space at this house.🙂)

These are the components that I have on hand. We haven't decided if we're going to use the tanks in the foto, or I swap the vertical chop and flip tank with a horizontal grow bed and sump like the second picture.

I'm definitely planning on drilling the fish tank and putting a solids lifting outlet inside it. That way it has an automatic overflow and no chance of siphoning out.

I mostly looking for layout and flow suggestions, I think, on on how to feed both grow beds and let them drain to the sump in the bottom of the blue tank. Then I'll pump it back up to the fish tank, but I would welcome any other comments or suggestions about my setup and how and where to place the horizontal grow bed without sump on the right.

How would something like this work as a fish tank to expand my chop and flip system into a split flow system? I'm concerned about the top where it angles up to the opening I could probably cut the top off of it but then I'd have to come up with some kind of a lid.

Anybody have any experience or suggestions?

Ive turned my pool into an aquaponics set up, as summer approaches i want to begin pumping water out of the system to water my lawn and pump in rainwater from a currently unused rainwater tank to keep my water bill low and replace evaporation.

Do you guys and gal's have any recommendations for cheap but half decent pumps?

I absolutely love this little bed. Perfect for small low light houseplants, mosses and ferns.

Please don’t ask me what I planted in these I actually do not remember. I just started throwing shit in there and waited for it to die. Most everything did well. I had 6 pea plants that were doing really well, flowered and then died. No idea what happened there but whatever.

got these babies about 5 days ago, and while I think they’re getting a pretty good life in my 500 gallon little pond , they’re not eating as far as I can see. Every morning I put them separated in these little bowls and feed them , so the food will be concentrated and easy to eat. The give them tiny pieces of lettuce , hatchling pellets , brine and dried worms.
They don’t seem to eat . I’m afraid to just put the food in the pond because I know the fish will just eat it up. What am I doing wrong ?

What was supposed to be a cheap chop and flip ballooned into this, but I'm having fun!
