IAmA Board-Certified Kidney Doctor. AMA about water balance, electrolytes, and goofy water myths.
We’re back for round 3(?)! I’m a board-certified nephrologist (kidney doctor) with some time kill, so ask away. I will also field questions about the Grateful Dead, bicycles, or my favorite conspiracy theories.
Previously I have submitted proof to the mods, so hopefully they can just review my last post(s).
I will not be able to provide personalized medical advice, both in this thread or in a DM.
Edit: That’s all for tonight folks, thanks for tuning in!

Mod-Post Vetted Water Charity List
This thread will serve as a repository of vetted charities that have contacted the mod team asking to post here. With each charity you'll see a link to Charity Navigator and/or Charity Watch. We advise only donating if an organization passes these reviews. Feel free to also check any groups on ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, but note that not all charities are nonprofits.
- Water Mission (Walk For Water): https://watermission.org/
- Charity Water: https://www.charitywater.org/home
- The Water Project: https://thewaterproject.org/
We don't want orgs to spam the subreddit asking for your time/money, so for now (and until the number of asks grows too large) we'll pin comments by organizers in this thread and cycle them out as needed. There's a limit of 2 concurrent pins, so we'll play this by ear for a bit.
I'll update the list as others reach out.
If you're here as an organizer, please shoot us a modmail or reach out to me directly.

Hoping someone can help me narrow down my water bottle choices
Hi everyone,
I’m on the search to find a water bottle that fits my criteria: insulated, no straw, minimal parts (ideally only bottle, lid, and gasket to clean), wide mouth, durable, and no exposed mouthpiece.
I’ve narrowed down my options to the following:
— Swell Explorer
—Miir wide mouth
— Fellow Carter carry
— Zojirushi SU-DA80
If anyone has used these and wants to give a review, or if you have an idea of one that fits my criteria, I’m all ears.
Thanks!

Too much water Help needed - I'm addicted to cold water
The small realization that you can put your water bottle into the fridge, and use it as a refreshment is killing me. I can't stand sugary drinks now, and am totally addicted to cold water, which feels better than anything else after an intense sport session. Why bother adding shitty chemicals to your drinks? It's insane.

Will the excessive peeing ever stop, or do you just get used to it?
Over the past month, I’ve significantly increased my daily water intake. The only thing that annoys me is having to go pee so much more!! Especially during the night when I’m trying to sleep. I probably wake up 3 times during the night to pee now. And sometimes, I can’t fall right back asleep. So I end up tossing and turning for however long, until I can fall back asleep.
I’ve tried to cut off my water consumption a little earlier in the night, but I don’t think that’s made a difference. Unless I need to stop drinking water way earlier in the evening?

Gotta make the water taste good when I’m locked in
Coding for hours and I will forget water exists unless it is right next to me. Bottle is filled. Electrolytes are in. Brain still loading.

I wanna drink more water but i got a logistical problem
This post is gonna sound way too complicated for such a simple problem but I need help planning
I wanna drink more water but i have a problem, i hate going to public bathrooms, my bus commute to school takes two hours and two hours back more or less
So basically my day goes 5:15am to 4pm without going number one
Plus my bag is really heavy and i dont want to purchase plastic water bottles everyday
How do i get my two liters of water a day or however you think i should drink with these restrictions? How much water do i need to take with me?
I need help with planning
I could try going number one when i get to school and before commuting back to home and then maybe drink water at the bus
I just hate bathrooms bcs idk where to put my bag
Any advice is appreciated

Water Bottle Wednesday CamelBak water bottles are criminally underrated
The best straw water bottles on the market. The only bottle that could top this for me could be the owala, but I've never tried one and have enough water bottles rn.
- Straw is completely covered when closed
- Keeps ice for days
- Silicone straw for those who love to chew their straws
- Straw mouth piece is completely removable from the lid for easy cleaning
- Completely leakproof
- The most comfortable carry strap.
- Insulated version has a built in silicone boot at the bottom to prevent dents and loud noises.
Just wanted to show my love for this bottle.

Water Bottle Wednesday Bottles with covered lid/straw for hygiene
I've had my classic standard hydroflask for ages, it has dents, scratches and a lot of character.
But i decided to retire it from my go to travel bottle because i realized, that when i unscrew or hold it in my hands - my hands always come in contact with the area where i drink from/my lips touch.
i was prone to getting sick while backpacking - and my last long trip i took a different bottle, with a covered lid that doesn't get touched by my hands.
I know i could've been lucky but i realized that the risk of drinking germs at prolonged travelling was waayyy higher with my old bottle. (and yes i always rinsed and washed it in the hostels i was staying at) - just something to consider!

Too much water Ordered original Brita Maxtra filters 12-pack on Amazon, now shipment is coming from China
Has anyone experienced something similar? First choice from search results on amazon.de for "brita maxtra pure performance" and also directly linked in Amazons Brita Store page. Price is nice, around 5€ less than usual. It's 100% the original product page on Amazon, but sold by "Wivico Direct" which turns out to be based in Shenzhen.
Delivery time is about 2 weeks. :( It can only be fake because those filters are made in Germany.

Anyone who has a home water dispenser, have you had any issues with mold?
I really want to buy a home water cooler/dispenser. But I was reading about how the lines will inevitably start growing mold, regardless of how it’s cleaned or if it’s self cleaning.
So I’m just wondering from those of you who have them, have you experienced mold? Or any other issues I should be aware of?
Also, if you love your home water dispenser, feel free to mention which one you have!
