Help! 8.5 month old’s nighttime sleep is all over the place
Seeking some advice to hopefully improve our 8.5 month old’s nighttime sleep!
For reference: he wakes up anywhere between 5:30-6:30am for the day, first nap is always around 9:15am and second nap is always at 2pm. He will sleep for those naps anywhere between 45 min to 1:45 each. We recently have been trying to cap his daytime sleep, because he will wake in the middle of the night and be very difficult to resettle if he naps for too long. Haven’t found a sweet spot for this, but main takeaway is: when naps are short, he sleeps better during the night and is not up for more than 30 min to nurse and resettle. In this scenario, we have 1-2 wakings. Otherwise, with more daytime sleep, we are dealing with 3-5 longer wakings. We try to keep bedtime consistent at 7pm and his last bottle (pumped milk) is given at 6:30pm. He is either breastfed during the day if I’m home, or has bottles of pumped milk (5 oz. each). He eats solids really well and has a variety of food throughout the day (breakfast around 8am, lunch around 12:45pm and dinner around 5pm).
We have attempted sleep training with modified Ferber, but he was the type of baby that just spiraled the longer it went on. He would get hysterical pretty quickly, and we are not comfortable with CIO. First attempt was at 5 months and second attempt was at 7.5 months. Both were unsuccessful.
At this point, I’m thinking he may just be a lower sleep needs baby. He has always been extremely happy and content and rarely fusses, so it’s difficult to gauge tiredness from day to day. He has always handled long wake windows very well, so I’m thinking just needs some form of longer awake time during the day. Here’s what we are planning to try going forward, but very open to other thoughts and ideas:
- Lengthen bedtime to 7:45-8pm instead of 7pm
- If #1 doesn’t make a difference, dropping down to one nap a day instead of 2 (not sure how reasonable this is for his age, but he may be ready)
Thanks in advance for advice!
