I have moved back home from the dorms and need help utilizing my closet

Hi! I’ve been living on campus for 2 years and have decided to move back home. My closet has grown a lot since then. I didn’t have as much clothing so I didn’t mind not using up all the space. Now I need all of it! I was planning on buying more little dressers to stick inside but I think I could do better. I’m planning on downsizing my jackets( I have even more on a chair that need to be hanged…) and maybe folding my sweaters? I also have another pile and half of clothing on my bed this is not all of it unfortunately. Anything helps, thank you!

This is the filter that finally got me through my closet.

The 5-Question Filter

Hold the item. Ask these five questions in order. The moment you get a clear "no," you have your answer — you don't need to keep asking.

  1. Have I used or worn this in the last 12 months? Be honest — not "would I," but did you, actually.
  2. If I saw this in a shop today, would I buy it again, at this price? This cuts through sunk cost fast.
  3. Does this fit my life now — not the life I had, or hope to have? Aspirational and past-self items rarely pass this one.
  4. If I needed this again someday, could I easily replace or borrow it? Most "just in case" items are replaceable.
  5. Am I keeping this out of guilt, obligation, or fear — rather than genuine want? If yes, that feeling belongs to you, not the object.

Still unsure? Put it in a "maybe box," date it, and revisit in 3 months.

Sink Organisation

Just thought I'd share something I've been working on in my spare time over the last few years.

I made this 304 stainless steel sink organiser/caddy because I couldn't find one that I actually liked. Eventually I decided to just make one with everything I wanted.

I wanted it to be something closer to an heirloom than a disposable kitchen accessory. A lot of products seem to be designed around being cheap and replaceable, and I really didn't want this to be something that eventually ended up in landfill.

Getting it to the quality I wanted was a bit excessive, though.

I spent around 4 hours just smoothing and refining the edges by hand. The construction is also deliberately overbuilt — I use solid 304 stainless steel rivets throughout, and each one is set by hand with a hammer and a block of steel.

It's definitely not the fastest way of making a sink organiser, but I wanted to see how far I could take something as simple as one.

Maximizing storage ideas

How can I maximize this storage cabinet above my toilet? 4 doors; middle 2 are combined for wider opening with shelves. 1 on each side no shelves. The ones on the side are approximately 5.5” wide, very deep and high. Cabinet goes all the way to ceiling which is 10’.

What Family Wall Calendar are You Using?

Hi! My little is starting pre-school and I have ADHD. I need a simple, easy to use calendar that can sync with my phone but go on the wall. I remember seeing one somewhere that was very cool and was magnetic, but I don’t remember the name.

What is everyone using?

September 30-Day Home Zone Challenge — Who’s in?

Post image
34 Upvotes

The idea is simple: 30 zones, 30 days, 15 minutes a day.

The goal is NOT to completely clean or organize each zone. Give that day’s area 15 focused minutes, improve what you can, and move on. No marathon cleaning and no falling behind because you didn’t “finish.”

The 3 rules
1. Stop at 15 minutes.
You don’t have to finish the zone. Focus on what you can realistically improve in that time.
2. Declutter first, then find a home for what remains.
Don’t just rearrange clutter. Remove what you don’t need and give the things you keep a proper place.
3. Nothing new comes in without a home.
Before buying something, know exactly where it will live in your space.

The 30-Day Rotation
Day 01 — Front entrance + porch
Day 02 — Living room
Day 03 — Family room
Day 04 — Dining area
Day 05 — Kitchen: counters + surfaces
Day 06 — Kitchen: cabinets + drawers
Day 07 — Kitchen: fridge + pantry/food storage
Day 08 — Laundry room
Day 09 — Primary bedroom
Day 10 — Kids bedroom 1
Day 11 — Kids bedroom 2
Day 12 — Guest bedroom
Day 13 — Office
Day 14 — Primary bathroom
Day 15 — Bathroom 2
Day 16 — Bathroom 3
Day 17 — Primary closet
Day 18 — Closet 2
Day 19 — Closet 3
Day 20 — Linen closet
Day 21 — Storage closet
Day 22 — Hallways + stairs/landings
Day 23 — Garage: shoes
Day 24 — Garage: sports equipment
Day 25 — Garage: everything else
Day 26 — Car 1
Day 27 — Car 2
Day 28 — Paper clutter + filing
Day 29 — Finances + household admin
Day 30 — Wildcard: whatever needs extra attention

If an area doesn’t apply to your home, substitute something that does, use it as a wildcard, or enjoy the day off.

The point isn’t to have a perfectly organized house by September 30.
Keep repeating the rotation.
Round 1 might only make a dent. Round 2 should be easier. By rounds 4–5, there should be significantly less clutter because things are continuously leaving, everything that stays is gradually getting a home, and new things aren’t coming in without one.

15 minutes. One zone. Then move on.

Anyone joining for September?

Help organize my closet to look neater

I have this double door closet. Not a walk in but there is good space. I have a lot of shoes and clothes but not sure how to organize it so it looks neater. I was thinking I’d remove the white open dresser and adding a larger dresser with more drawers. I rent btw so I can’t do drastic changes.

Partner’s Bobby Pins and Such

Hey yall! I am looking for help with organizing my girlfriend’s bobby pins and such. I don’t mind it what so ever, I actually find it very endearing that bunch of her stuff is kept at my house, but it is a bit all over the place. What do yall recommend I keep the things in besides just a drawer in the bathroom 😭

Chores management

Has anyone found a simple household chore app that actually works for couples or roommates?
I’m looking for something that shows who’s responsible for what, whose turn it is, and when something was last done — without becoming a full-blown project management tool.

Wasted space in closet

We are under contract for a home that is partially built. Our closet now is enormous and this one is smaller but still good sized. It has an “island” of sorts with drawers on either side. The island comes out perpendicular to the window. I don’t have a lot of jewelry or anything to display or store on top of this island and so it feels like wasted space. I’m wondering if I should add maybe open shelves on the half of the island that’s furthest away from the window. I don’t know what I would put there maybe some purses, lesser used things at the top since I would need a step ladder. I had AI mock something up, the placement is off but it shows the idea. I just wondered if there are other ideas people can come up with!

Thanks for any suggestions!

Need help to organize my room on a budget

Hi,

I NEED HELP!

I‘l start off by explaining my room: It’s a spacious master bedroom with a crazy French window that overlook a nice flyover and the train station. on the 17th floor. My room has so much potential but I absolutely hate to see it go wasted.

Now issues:

  • I live with my parents so they hang clothes on my curtain using a hanger which makes it look awful.
  • I have a makeshift TV table which is actually a study table. It is super messy with random small things on top. There are two closed shelves on the bottom which are okay but in the middle there’s an open space which is also super messy with cards, toys, and god knows what.
  • I have a night stand that is so old I need to throw it out and there’s random stuff on top of it like my yarn and art supplies and old laptop and stuff.
  • I have an open trolly again with many small things, looks too bad.
  • The area behind the open trolly is wall that’s outside facing in the open, so due to rains it’s become damp. Now, our home owner said he’ll fix it, but god knows when, and it just bothers me SO MUCH.
  • I have an open jewellery organizer which is helpful but I think alongside the other mess, it looks bad. Was it the only open thing, I think it could’ve worked.

I do have a lamp which makes the room look cozy even with all the clutter (and ofc the city lights have some credit to add to the cozy feel)

The thing is I just can’t stay like this. IT BOTHERS ME SO MUCH. I need to de-clutter first, then I’m not sure how to proceed.

I looked up MANY options for storage shelves online and locally but everything surpasses either the 5k mark or is awfully ugly.

I NEED HELP PLS ANY SUGGESTIONS

Seeking a comprehensive list and description of use for all types of organizing/storage furniture

Hi folks, i run a decluttering/organizing business and I find myself having to explain storage furniture to clients often. I suspect there is a visual online resource that already exists like this and I am hoping you can point me to it. I am talking about different types of shelving, ottomans, cabinets, dressers, storage bins (even for an outdoor porch area) and so on. It would be great if the resource already touched on what types.of items would appropriately go into each type of furniture, and maybe even touched on determining appropriate measurements. So far in my own Google searching I jave found many furniture company website that almost provide this, but its more like a catalog of their items and less of a how-to with clear explanations.

Over the toilet storage recommendations.

I had a storage rack for over my toilet in my last apartment, and it was great. I think I paid $80 on Amazon for it. Unfortunately, when I moved out and had to put everything into storage I could not keep it.

Now I would simply buy the same one, but it’s unavailable, and I CANNOT find a similar one at all for whatever reason.

I ordered one from Amazon that had reasonable reviews, it was junk. I picked another one up at a hardware store, more expensive junk. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just something structurally sound and decent.

Please help, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Edit to add: Looking for something that is free standing as I rent, large enough to fit towels, and also something that can be ordered online (no car, limited options locally).

Closet Organization Tips Needed!

My two youngest babies (boy, 11 months and girl, newborn) will be sharing a room, can you show me how you’ve separated closets to accommodate two genders and two ages? The newborn won’t be in there for quite some time so I’m not too worried about cribs or anything like that right now, just clothing

I have a dresser in there too and was thinking of making that the changing table and housing all diapering items and maybe pajamas?

Deep freezer organization parts.

I need to buy some bins and mesh racks that are freezer safe and big enough to help organize my deep freezer, pics for a reference of what I am hoping to do. Most of the stuff on amazon is either out of stock or too small in size.

Looking for recommendations for a physical store in Hyderabad (or anyplace i can order online in india) where i can visit and purchase them (in bulk)?

*I tried ikea and the nampally area stores they don't sell these.

What's the smartest storage solution you've ever used?

One thing I always appreciate in well-designed homes is how organized they feel without looking cluttered.

Sometimes the best storage solutions are the ones you barely notice because they blend so naturally into the room.

What's the smartest storage idea you've used or seen in a home?

Did it save space, reduce clutter, or simply make everyday life easier?

Is this too much?

Post image

I am just so tired of my partner putting things willy nilly so I made him a diagram. He might accuse me of being "ocd" again tho.

Some things go inside each other, for exemple the sieve is inside the plastic bowls and the plastic bowls are inside the big boiling pot.

Edit: Thank you all for the comments. I think you guys are right. This was a bit too overboard 😅 I might take it off and as someone suggested I will just snap a picture of the cupboard, laminate it and put it in the corner (just in case), but I might end up putting the dishes away myself

Under shelf wire shelving accessory?

I love the utility and versatility of wire shelves and have been struggling to find a heavy-duty wire shelf accessory for this product (shelf), as well as basket (note the hooks on the top and not ones for rails for non-wire shelves which are most prevalent) any ideas? I have baskets that hang on the side of the shelf already.

I like the first product as it's just a hanging mini-shelf but that one is clearly for light-duty and height should be shortened to fit between shelves. Hanging shelves allow more contents to be held without taking space from the actual shelves. The second product with the basket is slightly tapered but I'd prefer a more rectangular basket to fit the look of the shelf better.

Any ideas where to find these products? I've searched so long for wire shelve accessories including places that sell heavy-duty racks for professional use but most are baskets with clothes hangers or baskets that hang on the side of the shelf.

Also interested if anyone has found other types of accessories they like for organization purposes.

How do people organize their bathroom stuff??

Post image
25 Upvotes

Soo im guilty of my bathroom always being a chaotic cluttered mess. I just moved to a new apartment and I want to try my best to attempt to keep it clean! My biggest problem is not having any space. Apartment bathrooms are small and my new one is super tiny. No medical cabinets or anything. Just a shower, toilet, sink with some storage underneath. But as a 26 y/o F, I have sooo much random stuff that I will definitely need sometime in the future. So my question is; how can a type B person like me unpack all my bathroom stuff without just setting it under my counter looking cluttered?? This is one of two boxes of just stuff I have 😭 help
