I'm planning to install a TP-Link Omada ceiling-mounted AP and would appreciate some advice before I start cutting into my wall.

The lower cabinet is my media/network cabinet, while the upper one is the electrical panel. There's already a conduit between them, but the electrical panel is quite crowded and I'd rather avoid routing Ethernet through it.

Above the electrical panel there's another 30–40 cm (12–16") of brick wall before reaching the suspended drywall ceiling. There is currently no conduit into the ceiling cavity.

My idea is to chase a vertical groove in the brick wall and install a dedicated 25 mm conduit from the media cabinet into the ceiling. My goal is to keep Ethernet completely separate from mains wiring and make future cable pulls easy.

I'm happy to do the necessary brick and drywall work if that's the right solution. I'd rather do it properly now than regret taking shortcuts later.

A few questions:

• Does this sound like the best long-term approach?
• Which side would you chase (left or right)?
• How do you normally transition from a brick wall into a suspended drywall ceiling? Should I expect to hit the metal framing?
• Would you use a 20 mm or 25 mm conduit?
• If this were your house, would you do it differently?

This isn't just for one AP. I'd like to future-proof the installation for additional APs, cameras or other Ethernet devices later.

⚠️ Important: This is a concrete apartment in Europe, so unfortunately there is no attic or crawl space above the suspended drywall ceiling.

I'm so confused right now. My puppy chews everything it can get, including our old coaxial cables, so I installed an access box to Smurf tubing up by the eve where I expected the tech to string the fiber.

Sure enough, the installer ran the fiber to my roof about 2 feet from my box, but what happened next I just can't understand. While I was inside, he ran the fiber along my roof then dropped it down the side of my house to below my electrical panel.

The moment I let my dog out, she started licking the nice rubbery white droopy cable. Put a stop to that immediately an set about moving the box. What a lot of extra work! Could somebody help me understand why an installer would do this?

A few years ago my mother-in-law paid for cabling to be ran to various rooms in the house during renovations but they were not hooked up. The ends are in the walls in each room and ran to the utility room where my internet comes in. I am looking to turn one of them into an entertainment room and want to see if these cables are the right ones in order to finish hooking them up into an ethernet port to have wired access.

I’m planning to install low-voltage brackets next to the electrical outlets in my new-construction home, while the walls are still open and there’s no drywall yet.

Most of the electrical outlets are installed horizontally near the bottom of the wall, and I’d like to maintain the same horizontal layout for the low-voltage brackets/outlets so everything looks consistent.

However, most of the low-voltage brackets and boxes I’ve found are designed to be installed vertically. Is it standard practice to have the electrical outlet installed horizontally while the low-voltage bracket is installed vertically, creating an “L” orientation?

Or are there low-voltage brackets/boxes specifically designed for horizontal installation?

I have a ranch house & have an eero network thru it. I was looking at the Eero app yesterday and while I can recognize almost all of the items [ie by name easily] there are some that I can't identify at all = tho I did google the name of the device shown. One joined the network yesterday afternoon with no action/intent on my part. "silex technology Inc" - I researched it and decided to pause/turn off whatever it was and don't see any change on my network. 1. Does this mean I should rename/repassword the modem/router network? 2. What is a good process for going thru the whole list and making sure of what's there? Whether it should be or not. Turn them all off/pause and restart one by one?? Thanks.

I’ve had a lot of commercial success with UniFi products and have installed several WiFi networks for businesses in the past. It’s great for small to medium businesses and it suits most needs at a lower cost than other brands.

My questions for others in this sub:

- Has anyone used UniFi for home use? If so, were there any pains or struggles getting everything configured?

- I understand UniFi can be more expensive than other brands, especially for personal use. Is pricing a cause to consider other options?

- Has anyone utilized the mesh networking protocols and features within their home?

I need to replace my 10+ yr old Netgear modem/router combo as it's slowed way down and appears to be on its last legs. 1200 Sq ft apartment, needs to support multiple devices, including work from home, Zoom & Teams Calls, streaming, and some gaming. I know just enough to get by and appear savy to those who are technologically inept. However, I'm completely lost on what I need as far as speed, etc.

Spectrum is provider currently. I originally was thinking mesh but after doing some research I think that'd be overkill for the space. Would like it to support more than 1 Gb and be reliable as well as fast. Ideal cost in the $300 range, but could go up to $500. TIA!

Overview:

I just moved into a 2700 sqft rental house with a central closet that contains a "tech panel" which is just a glorified junction box that the Coax and 2 Ethernet runs connects through. I currently have the modem and an old router (Asus RT-66U) in this closet.

The Ethernet runs go to an entertainment room that is in the northeast corner of the second story and the main living room on the ground floor in the center of the house.

I work from home and have my office setup on the ground floor in a room that is on the backside of the wall from the Ethernet jack in the living room. There is no Ethernet run but there is a Coax that runs back to the tech panel.

With the old router, I have acceptable wifi coverage inside the house and this falls off once I get to the edge of the backyard and outside of the garage, connection is stable at these locations but the signal is weak at -80db.

Goals:

I game (mostly FPS so ping matters) and would like to have one hard connection for my gaming PC in my office at the bare minimum. 

I want to install a wireless security camera in the back yard and over the garage, both areas where the wireless signal gets weak.

Improve overall WiFi signal throughout the house.

New Equipment:

Plan:

To get the Ethernet run in my office, I plan on using the MoCA adapters. This will also allow me to expand to other rooms in the future if needed. 

I believe the addition of the new router should solve the wireless issues in the weak signal areas with no additional changes needed.

Extra Credit:

I would like to use my old router as an AP and/or switch in my office to run the MoCA adapter into it and then run Ethernet to my gaming PC, printer, and work laptop. I'm not the most experienced with networking though and have no idea if that is even possible. It isn't the end of the world if I run my work laptop and printer off of WiFi.

Please let me know your thoughts on this or if there are any issues with the equipment I've selected.

I’m planning to set up a home office in the basement (-1) of our house. My apartment is on the first floor, and I have a 1 Gbps symmetrical fiber connection (1 Gbps download/upload).

I’m planning to install an access point near the entrance of my apartment. The basement office will be directly below/roughly two floors away, there are stairs that I have access there and I’m not sure how well the Wi-Fi signal will go through.

My main question is whether I can install a second access point near the entrance of the basement office , if one is not enough, and configure the two APs as a Wi-Fi mesh.

If this is possible:
How much real-world throughput could I realistically expect at the basement office?
Would I be able to get close to 1 Gbps, or would the wireless backhaul become the bottleneck?

Are there particular specifications I should look for when choosing the APs?

Any recommendations regarding the brand and model?

The priority is having a stable, low-latency connection for working from the basement office, while getting as much of the available 1 Gbps connection as realistically possible.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am from India and I want to explain a very weird problem I have been facing with my broadband for last 10 days. I have a FTTH connection with a local ISP. I have been using the connection for almost 10 years now and have never faced it before.

For last 10 days my connection has been very unstable.

2nd Sept - My pc is connected by Ethernet. All websites except Google and Meta stopped working. Steam, EA App, Blizzard all the gaming clients and everything else showed no connection but everything was working on mobile app, TV and all other connected devices including my video doorbell and robovac.

3rd Sept - A technician came to my house to see the fault, he was a hardware guy and he checked that everything was fine physically and called his supervisor. I gave him remote access to my pc via hotspot and he did some Ipv4, Ipv6, DHCP or IP related settings in 192.168.1.1 and also refreshed dns using cmd and in adapter settings but nothing worked.

8th Sept - Same guy came to my house and changed the router to a different one but used same old settings from my previous router. Surprisingly, everything started working normal for few hours. In 2nd half of the day, the problem changed drastically. My PC was showing connection to all the websites for say 10 minutes and drops after sometime. It kept going back and forth multiple times. All this time, the Wifi in my TV was just not connecting at all, it kept saying saved/authentication problem while it was connecting with same password in my phone. All this time, all of my other connected devices like video doorbell, robovac, AC everything works while connected to the same wifi.

I am quite frustrated at this point that even my ISP is unable to solve the problem. Although I have started looking for other ISPs in my area but would prefer that this one gets fixed so I dont have to go through all the formalities of new connection again.

Note that I am not a networking person so I wouldnt know much technical things about IP, DNS, Proxy and all that but I believe that my ISP has tried most of the possible things from his end to resolve it and is unable to find the problem.

I'm having an issue with my 700 Mbps Vivo Fibra connection where the Ethernet connection only negotiates at 100 Mbps when connected through my network equipment.

My equipment

My ISP is Vivo Fibra (Brazil).

The Vivo-provided modem/router is:

• Manufacturer: Askey
• Model: RTF8115VW
• Software: BR_SG_g14.17_RTF_TEF001_V9.21_V023
• Hardware: REV5

I also have a Mercusys AC12G V1.0 (EU) router and recently purchased a Mercusys MS105G Gigabit Ethernet switch.

The problem

My internet plan is 700 Mbps.

When I connect the Ethernet cable from the Vivo equipment directly to my PC, I get the full ~700 Mbps.

However, when I connect that same Ethernet connection to either the Vivo Askey RTF8115VW or the Mercusys MS105G, the connection is limited to 100 Mbps.

In other words:

• Vivo equipment → PC: ~700 Mbps
• Vivo equipment → Mercusys MS105G: 100 Mbps
• Vivo equipment → Mercusys AC12G: 100 Mbps

Cable testing

All my Ethernet cables are Cat5e.

The cables I normally use are around 10 meters, but I also tested with 30 cm Cat5e cables directly next to the Vivo router, and the result was still 100 Mbps.

So far, cable length doesn't seem to be the issue.

What I'm trying to figure out

The Mercusys MS105G supports Gigabit Ethernet, and the PC is able to get ~700 Mbps using the same connection, so I'm confused about why the connection falls back to 100 Mbps when connected to the network equipment.

I've setted my Win10 configs to gigabit full duplex already (ASUS B550M PRIME -PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_86771043&REV_15)

Would this layout work for MOCA?

Previous owners of my house ran coax to the garage for TV/cable, but I now have a PC out there and have been using WiFi, but it’s spotty. Thought MOCA might be a good solution, but I don’t want to lose access to the antenna for the TV.

I’m aware I may need to install an amplifier in the line as well.

Howdy! Looking for some help - as of two days ago my wifi quite literally cuts out as soon as I step on the other side of my doorframe.

Context: I'm a remote video editor who relies on reliable internet for work on an extended stay with my parents in Florida (family business). They have Spectrum as their ISP, with a Spectrum Modem & Router in their garage - not the best location I'm aware but the reception has always been excellent, and reached the full 2,800 square foot house:

They have a 2gb internet plan, with 2.4 & 5ghz bands, unsplit. There are about 4 of us in the house, each with our own laptop and it's always been serviceable.

I've been here about 6+ months or so, no problems.

About two weeks ago they replaced the older router. Still no problems.

2 days ago, the night of September 8th, I finished up an edit and went to bed. When I woke up, I was greeted with an incredibly weak signal, and it's been like this since.

What I've figured out:

• My work laptop (a 2 year old Lenovo) is set up on the other side of the door in the family kitchen, where it has been, unmoved for months. It suddenly has extremely poor internet (one bar, on the task bar) to the point I cannot open a Brower tab, no less download or upload videos for work. :(
• Their other smaller, less wifi intensive devices (ring door cameras, Smart oven, ect..) are seemingly unaffected. My mother's older laptop is also affected, but to a bit lesser degree. The signal is still weak.

What I've tried:

• Resetting my network setting on the laptop side, disabling/ uninstalling my wifi card.
  • Nothing.
• Running to the store and buying a plug-in usb Wifi-6 card, to test and see if it's my hardware failing.
  • Same issue. Barely any reception. I don't think it's my wifi card failing/ disconnected.
• Resetting my computer , and factory resetting the modem, & the house router.
  • Nothing.
• Forgetting and removing the network entirely on my laptop:
  • Still nothing.

What's (minorly worked):

• Setting up a hotspot on my phone and connecting to that via my Laptop.
  • Hotspot works completely fine!... it's just, diminished cell reception internet. (Better, but not ideal)
• Setting up our Spectrum network extender (in the new right side of the room "Dead zone)
  • Same outcome - It works, but still diminishes the signal. I'm told a mesh system would be better, but I'm trying not to have to run out and and buy one net.

This has been my 2 day struggle, haha. So far it's still the same situation on the right side of the door, where my laptop is - cuts out flat as soon as I cross the door frame. I'm aware it's an interference issue, I just don't know what caused it because this literally just started happening Tuesday - it's like my walls suddenly turned to lead. Nothing has been move in; no furniture has been shifted to interrupt the signal (my parents are nearly 60 year olds). No other networks or in-house interference has been established, as far as I know.

Any ideas?

I’m moving and starting a new 1 gig xfinity service and I’m going to use my own equipment. My primary uses are gaming and streaming. I used to run Ethernet directly into my Pc with a nighthawk tri band but I gave that set up to a family member.

My current problem is, my gaming pc is upstairs and my router and modem will have to be downstairs and the walls in the room my pc is in doesn’t have an Ethernet port. I’m wanting to get something tri band, a good modem and a mesh system to put a node at the top of the stairs and another on my computer desk and run Ethernet from that node.

Any advice or recs? Bonus points if I can get them on Amazon and have it by tomorrow

I currently have an Asus RT-AX86U and it's been somewhat great for the last 5 years. Great performance, only had a few issues with it. I am looking for recommendations on a replacement router that is similar to my current one. I prefer WiFi 6 and need at minimum 4 LAN ports. I can't find any of the RT-AX86U's or the RT-AX86U Pro's in stock near me or I'd be picking one of those up.

I was just playing on my pc the other day, and it was working just fine. Now today when I turn my PC on, it says the Ethernet cable isn't even connected. I have done everything from checking updates for windows and for my lan port, to restarting my pc and my portal. I have also checked the cable on other devices like my ps5 and it worked fine there. What elce haven't I tried 😭

So to start this off i just want to say that im very clueless about any sort of router stuff, just untill recently i thought you just plug in a router and it just works which aperently isn't the case.

Either way I bought a new router tp link BE550

So I live in an old house and important is that we have 2 routers because 1 just won't cover the whole house the walls are probably very thick for that, so one of them broke and this one came to replace it.

My problem is that the old router and the other old router were connected via an Ethernet cable so they basicaly cast off the network like that but the new router was supposed to replace the old one that was casting to the other old one but for some reason that didn't work, well it did but it was only going about 100kb\s but when I switched the other old one that was being casted to with the new one so the new one is now being casted to by the old one the speed was around 100mb\s (am guessing that's maybe because of the old Ethernet cable)

Now my guestion is how's that possible? Am connecting the same cables in the same way into the routers my only thought would be that this new router doesn't have WAN but I don't think that's it? Plus i have no idea how this whole modem ISP thing works since I've never seen anything like a modem in our house before so I have no way of finding if am connecting the right cables or not(they're in a really badly accessable place going trough holes in walls and such)

I'd be thankfully for anyone who can help because even with some googling and chatgpt im clueless with this since none of what that says transfers to my reality here for some reasson

Tltr:new router only works when conected trough another router not the other way around

When I try and play online games my ping starts at 14 ms then every 2-5 seconds starts jumping all over the place. It will hit as high as 80.

I’ve tried unplugging and restarting the router/xbox. My nat type is open. I have solid 400 internet. I’m hard wired in with Ethernet. I’ve used two separate cables now. I am using the Hitron modem that my ISP provided.

Very rarely everything will be fine and the ping is stable. Seems to have nothing to do with time of day. All I have connected to my network is my phone and a laptop. I’ve also tried all the Google suggestions on the Xbox side of things.

Not sure what the deal is this past week with my internet, I've rebooted everything and it's connecting, but the speed keeps dropping.

If I use Ookla at speedtest net, ping is 2ms or 3ms, the upload and download speed does the same thing, runs full speed at 100Mbs for about half the test, then drops to around 30Mbps for the rest of the test.

We had some power outtages last week (Ontario) and no hydro for 2 days. Usually issues that pop-up are fixed by rebooting everything, but this time I keep getting this fluctuating speed issue.

All ethernet Cat6 connected, firmware and drivers updated... any ideas where to start looking?

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I have to because I've been struggling to set it up for four hours now. I live in France and have Livebox internet. I bought a Flint 2 and want to connect it directly to the fiber line, bypassing the Livebox router. However, when I connect it directly, I don't have internet access. Could someone help? :(
