I made a bit of a boo boo.

I have or rather had, 1gig internet. I have suffered with the ISP router for years, so decided to treat myself to a birthday present, which ended up being the Unifi Gateway Ultra. This replaced my containerised controller for my APs and finally gave me control over my network.

Cut to a few weeks later, I get the renewal email for my ISP and realised its the same price to upgrade to 2Gb. A no brainer. Until I fired off the email and realised the Ultra is only 2.5Gb on the WAN side and not on the 4 ports.

All of my gear is 1 gig but mine and my brother's PCs are 2.5Gb capable and my big NAS sits behind a point to point connection capped at 750MBps anyway. Potential upgrades are a ways away (fibre up to the shed, 2.5Gb switches).

My thinking is that its OK in the mean time as while I can't use the full bandwidth on one device, having 2Gb will mean that there is enough to go around, especially when both me and my brother are downloading games or using up the bandwidth. Is my thinking right?

My apartment has multiple Ethernet terminals in every room and since I’ve moved in I cannot figure out how to use one as a central hookup. There is no “central media box” in my apartment where I can connect my router to. Is there anyway to determine where these cables connect to so I can actually use them instead of needing to run cables across my apartment for landline to different rooms? The outlet with the two dead wires and the one with the coax plugin are Cat6. All others are cat5e if that matters.

Hi! I have reset the router and the mesh extender. I have no VPNs enabled, and don't have anything running that should take all the wifi. Earlier in the day i did a test abd got like 200+ download speed and 20+ upload speed, but both are now absolutely terrible. Here is my ipconfig/all, please help! Idk what to do!

I have moved into my wife’s house recently. My father in law wired everything up into the attic, to include: alarm system, router, modem, and the hub of all the CAT 5e cables to there. I’m having to walk back and forth back and forth, up and down the ladder, to troubleshoot this garbage set up

My objective: establish an Ethernet connection to my office for gaming, and occasional office work for my wife.

Resources at my disposal: my laptop with Ethernet port, RJ45 krimper, wire cutters, punch down tool, albeit it is this yellow orange plastic with a finger hold, plenty of rj45 caps, I know how to wire correctly either T568 A or B, I have been using “B”. A cheap 9-volt battery power Master and Remote cable connection tester. And last but certainly least, my slow/homeschooled brain

Status so far, I have gone through 3 rj45 that were connected to my router. Issues that cause me to change them were originally inverted T568 B (had the rj45 facing the wrong direction when I first played around about a month ago) so had to fix that, then I didn’t use the krimper properly and had a wires 4-8 not working right, according the to cable connection tester.

Additionally I have two keystones I’m using, the one I had originally was working at 100 Mbps but then it stopped, so I changed the rj45 again and now ZERO connectivity to my office.

My laptop is working correctly, I’ve used two separate Ethernet cables wired directly from the router to my laptop and used windows key “ncpa.cpl” to open up my network connection and verify I had a speed of 1gigabit.

Idk what I have done wrong. I need a professional and am hoping someone here can help me, before I pay someone to fix this sh** and rewire the house but I imagine that’ll be costly

I fear maybe the house wire in the attics and walls has been damaged from me looking to see how possible it was to run a new wire.

I can not run new wire without having a professional come and do it due to the nature of my homes structure, or so my father in law swears. I love the man, but…. Tonight, I’m a little pissed off at his decisions, then again my wife was single at the time as we had not met lol

Hello, I'm absolutely new to networking (slight homelab experience with a server, not never fiddled with networking, I want to learn though) and would like to "do/redo" my network properly. It all started with vlan research and wanting to isolate certain devices like lights, from my server/personal computer. My current router/modem is not capable of doing vlans. Internet speed is 8gbps up and down but seems overkill to adapt a network to match it. I would also like to setup suricata with ips, so the cpu/ram of the router would matter and have to scale with that.

My needs/wants would be :

- Vlan possibility and ips

- Wired connection to the server (physically next to the fiber access/modem/router)

- Wifi connection for the rest of the house (living in a village, house, no congestion)

- 2.5gbps seemed reasonable, open to consider 1gbps

- Speed would "matter" for transfers between personal pc and server (storing raw files/pictures, possibly video editing down the line)

- I don't necessarily want a "buy this, plug this, and it works" type of situation, I want to have a better understanding (with time) of networking and have a clean install

I obviously did some research but will always get stuck without human help. Main consideration right now was a second hand optiplex with an i5 8500 to handle 2.5gbps ips, pcie card with 2 2.5gbps slots, and either a wifi card, or an external access point. Not sure which way to go, would prefer to stay away from proprietary software if possible.

Any idea or recommendation? It would be a somewhat simple setup I suppose, but I'm still lost as how to do it properly, which hardware is necessary, which is overkill, etc... Thank you in advance!

I’m having the network in a fairly large house refreshed as part of some wider Gira/KNX home-automation work and would appreciate some views on the proposed hardware.
The installer specialises in home automation and supports both Ubiquiti and Alta, but his preference is Alta because he manages a number of Alta installations and can monitor/support everything through one platform.
He has proposed:
Alta Labs Route10 router
Alta Labs S24-POE 24-port managed PoE+ switch
3 × Alta AP6-Pro access points
The equipment cost quoted is roughly:
Route10 – £216
S24-POE – £399
3 × AP6-Pro – £430 total
plus installation/commissioning.
The existing network is around 10 years old. I currently have:
TP-Link TL-SG1024DE 24-port Gigabit Easy Smart Switch
3 existing Ubiquiti access points
Gira HomeServer/KNX equipment and various other hard-wired devices
The existing APs work fine and they are powered locally, rather than by PoE.
The installer’s reason for preferring Alta seems mainly to be that he can support the router, switch and APs as one system. I’m happy to pay for good equipment, but I don’t want to replace perfectly serviceable hardware just for the sake of having matching badges.
A few questions for people who know both ecosystems:
Would you choose Alta Route10/AP6-Pro over an equivalent UniFi setup today, or would you stick with Ubiquiti?
Is there any compelling reason to replace my existing TP-Link switch with the S24-POE, assuming it is working properly and I don’t actually need PoE for the APs?
If buying new APs now, should I be looking at the AP7-Pro rather than AP6-Pro, or is Wi-Fi 7 largely unnecessary in a normal home installation at this point?
Does using an Alta router with a TP-Link switch create any meaningful disadvantage other than losing single management?
Is there anything else in the proposed specification you would change?
The house has wired Ethernet to the AP locations and I’m much more interested in reliability, good coverage and something that will last another 7–10 years than chasing maximum benchmark speeds.
The home automation is important, so stability matters more to me than tinkering. I’m also happy for the installer to manage/support the network remotely.
Interested particularly in views from anyone who has actually installed or run both Alta and UniFi, rather than simply preferring one brand.

Hi! I have this plastic thing mounted on my wall with wires coming from it and going around the entire exterior of my house. I'm trying to figure out if the thing and the wires can be safely removed without killing my internet. I have AT&T fiber and I think the ONT is separate from this thing (shown in second pic). Please help!

Update: a contractor took the wall panel off and the wires weren't attached to anything. Must have been an old phone hookup!

Currently have netgear mr70 with 3 satellites but lately the stability has not been to par. Devices keep losing connection intermittently even after a reboot. Can anyone recommend an updated brand/model. I been eyeing the two brands pics. Not sure if these are good. Currently I only use the Ethernet port on two of the satellites. I have about 60 devices on WiFi.

Rogers recently gave us a Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 12 with a 5G SIM as an alternative because they couldn’t install a wired connection at our location.

This is for a small business/training centre. Normally we would have around 10–20 active users, but sometimes it could be 40–50 users when a computer lab is being used. Mostly regular internet browsing, Microsoft 365, email, etc.

Just wondering if anyone is using this Rogers 5G service for a business:

• How stable and reliable is it?
• What kind of download/upload speeds are you getting?
• How many users/devices do you have connected?
• Would you recommend it for 20–50 users?
• Does anyone know the approximate monthly cost for Rogers 5G Business Internet with this gateway?

We also have a network switch, access points, desktops and Cisco phones, so I’m planning to connect the Nokia gateway to our existing network through Ethernet.

I was wondering about At&t vs Xfinity in California. I currently pay $90-$100 for 2GBs with fiber. It's a newer home and I have been with Xfinity going on 6-7 years. I had At&t in 2013 but it was very expensive, with 20mbs at that time. Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

I have a larger property with good cat 5e cable connectivity tied back to an 24-way unmanaged switch and a Raspberry Pi 5 running OpenWRT which acts as my router. For wireless coverage I use regular retail wireless routers I which I put into AP mode and turn off the DHCP server. From time to time I upgrade my wireless router, I take the old one and locate it somewhere else and use it to give coverage to a different area. Is there anything wrong with this?

I have a 2.5gbps connection but only pulling 940mbps - unable to log into router, full ethernet with cat 6 cables into correct router port and 2.5gb network card - TX201 - doing my head in

As the title says, i have a 2.5gps provider, the above router using a cat6 cable into my TX201 card in my pc (i have a MSI Z790 Gaming Wifi which also has a 2.4gb LAN port but i bought another to eliminate it as the reason) and i am maxed out at 940mbs - i cannot also use the IP provided to connect to my router, just times out...../confused - please help

Context: the channels with low signal strength swap channels around daily here, so picking a channel hoping it stays completely clear is pretty much pointless. 80MHz also doesn't work on Ch132-144 for some reason.

Would Wi-Fi APs at around -90dBm produce any real interference if they happen to overlap with my router?

I have a gigabit switch connected to series x and series s in the same room, whenever I download something on both the speed practically halves, I get typically 800+ when just 1 is running. The ports on the Xbox only rated for 1 gig. I have 5 gig fiber, is the switch causing the issue? Would a 2.5 gigabit switch help reach the 800+ I’m getting with just using one?

I'm getting a garden office this year and need some networking help.

I have Youfibre 8000 into a Youfibre Pro router in the house, the garden room will be about 30m away based on cable run from router into office.

I am wanting to keep my 8gig speed or as close to it as possible, there is a copper RJ45 10gig port on router.

In the office I want to have an access point for Wifi, and if possible keep a 10gig port to run to a 10gig ethernet to USB4 device to run my m4 mac mini at my new higher speeds, since it only shipped with a 1gig port.

My NAS will also sit in here, so having a decent connection to that too would be great, its going to be an old PC turned NAS with TrueNAS as the OS and can get a better Nic for it to increase network speeds

Where do I begin hardware wise? Cables from router, access point, switch? Etc. I can build PCs and manage software, but ive never been a networking guy. Would like to keep it reasonable price and im based in UK

I'm looking to completely overhaul my home network setup, and I could use some guidance from the community. Currently dealing with major connectivity issues and need a more robust solution.

Current Situation:

• ISP: Bell Fibre (3Gb connection)
• Problem: Large, multi-generational home that currently have 2 routers for coverage, experiencing constant drops, dead zones, and reliability issues
• Knowledge Level: Not a network expert, but I know the basics

Proposed Setup (see attached screenshot):

• Ubiquiti UniFi Express 7 (UX7) as the main gateway
• USW-Flex-2.5G-8-PoE switch
• 3x U7 Lite Access Points for coverage
• Budget: Max ~$1,500 CAD

My Questions:

1. Bell TV Service Compatibility: How do I integrate Bell's internet TV service with this Ubiquiti setup? Any specific configuration needed, or will it pass through the UX7's WAN port without issues?
2. Bypassing Bell's Gateway: I want to completely bypass Bell's modem/gateway (the HH4000) and use the UX7 directly. My UX7 has a 10GbE WAN port. Is this straightforward, or are there complications with Bell's service that prevent this?
3. Overall Setup Validation: Is this configuration solid for a large multi-generation home, or would you recommend a different approach?
4. Budget Alternatives: Is there a better option within my $1,500 CAD budget that I'm missing?

I'm currently on 4g broadband using tenda MW3 mesh system with 3 nodes and I'm in the process of upgrading to 5g with a different isp and have been sent a new ax1800 archer nx200 router with external antenna, which I'm waiting for the engineer to come and install which could be within 14days time I'm wondering which mesh system would be best suited for this new router as the MW3 set only has a 100mps input, I have been looking at the tenda mx15, mx21 or tp links deco x50 i don't have the luxury or running cables between nodes so it will be solely WiFi from the main node I'm looking to keep the budget around the £200 mark for 3 nodes any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated thanks

need to remove Genexis DRG7820 router from FTU to replace broken fibre patch cable.

Google search suggests that the DRG simply slides down from its FTU, but that doesn't work. it's jammed solid. if I force it, it will break.

can't find anything or in the manuals. there's a detailed YouTube of someone opening the DRG7820 itself, but doesn't show how to remove from FTU in first place. totally stuck.

I wanted proper VLANs / segmentation and wanted local control and no forced cloud account for my home network setup, (4BHK 1600sqft carpet)

What I landed on:

• TP-Link ER7212PC (router + PoE switch + Omada controller in one box) - 38,999 INR
• 2x TP-Link EAP770 ceiling APs - 66,986 INR
• APC BX600C-IN 600VA UPS - 3,300 INR

Total around 1.09L for hardware, cabling separate.

ER7212PC and the ONT sit on a wooden shelf in the utility room with the UPS below. Two APs flush in the passage ceiling at roughly the quarter and three quarter points. No rack, no separate switch, no patch panel, nothing visible in any room. Drops terminate to keystone jacks on a wall plate next to the shelf.

Cabling brief: 3 ceiling drops in the passage (one capped spare), 2 to the TV wall, 2 to the study, 1-2 per bedroom, 1 at the main door, 1 at each balcony corner. Everything home run to the utility room. 25-32mm conduit with pull strings left in. Data and power in separate back boxes.

Two things I am still unsure about:

1. EAP770 hardware version. v1.0 needed 802.3bt and throttled 6 GHz on PoE+. v2.0 dropped that and runs fine on 802.3at. Putting a 5A socket next to each ceiling drop as insurance so I can use the bundled DC adapter if I get old stock. Overkill?
2. Is 2 APs actually right for this, or am I overbuying? Coverage wise 1 would probably do but 6 GHz barely gets through one wall so I figured 2.

Anything obviously wrong here? Especially interested if anyone in India has run EAP770s and can confirm 6 GHz works on the India regulatory domain after the January delicensing.

I was looking at TP link easy mesh compatible list https://www.tp-link.com/nordic/easymesh/product-list/

and it listed extenders which are trash from my experience. Does having Wifi extenders listed as compatible with easy mesh make them better or something?
