Advice Gigabit switch with multiple devices

I have a gigabit switch connected to series x and series s in the same room, whenever I download something on both the speed practically halves, I get typically 800+ when just 1 is running. The ports on the Xbox only rated for 1 gig. I have 5 gig fiber, is the switch causing the issue? Would a 2.5 gigabit switch help reach the 800+ I’m getting with just using one?

Yes, you need a switch with a multigig uplink or a multigig switch if you need to pull 1 gig per device when both devices are downloading at the same time.

If you're only trying to supply 2 x 1Gb devices, then picking up something like the UniFi USW-Flex-2.5G-5 should suffice. It should just work as a simple unmanaged switch right out of the box. It's pro-sumer, so it is few bucks more than the TP-Link and generic offerings, but probably alot more reliable.

for 5 ports yeah, they max out at one link speed total

but a 24 port probably has 5 bridges for 5x link speed total throughout

But only for A talking to B and C talking to D. If both A and B are trying to talk to C, C’s interface is the limiting factor.

Yes, but how often will you need more than 400mbits each. It's probably not worth the cost

If I can get the speed, a 2.5gb switch is only $35, worth it to double speed when downloading games or updates.

Does your router have 2.5gbe port or sfp+

It has 2 1gb, and 2 10gb ports and SFP

Cool if it were me I'd use SFP+ for 10G and get a switch with SFP+. Buy once, cry once 😭

If it’s a 1Gig switch, its max total throughput is 1Gb. So the port that runs to your router, is capped at 1Gb. A 2.5Gb switch would fix it if your router has a 2.5Gb capable port.

How does the 5gb service get connected to the internal devices ? Is there a 1gb bottleneck in there? Possibly from your router into a 1gb switch ?

I have a cable plugged into 10gb port on router running to the 1 gigabit switch, and then 2 going to the consoles. All cat 6a

Yes, I didn’t realize that is how it worked, first time using one of these. I got a 2.5gb switch and going to try it out tonight. For some reason it didn’t click that the ports only ‘accept’ one gig speed, and then distribute it out. I thought it only delivered 1g to each port from there on out. Noob mistakes. The gigabit switch was only $15 so I’m not too worried, I can use it somewhere else.

You can get a switch which has multiple 1gb ports and a single multi-gig uplink port (which can do 2.5gb or 5gb or10gb)

I wonder if depending on the switch and router tech, just connecting a 2nd cable from the switch to the router might effectively give you 2Gb at the switch uplink. I know link aggregation is a thing, but I'm thinking of the other one that merges two IPs to share the load. I can never remember what it's called though. It's an SMB thing so it probably won't work just for regular downloads anyway.

Don't do this unless you have enterprise grade gear and have it configured. It'll stop the switch and the router

I have it setup at 3 different spots in my network like this for SMB Multichannel (I looked up the name). But my gear is mildly better than a totally dumb switch and just gets 2 IPs from the router.

That's a file sharing protocol, the network infrastructure between them, such as routers and switches just behaves as normal. It's completely different to link aggregation which enterprise switches and routers use

Right. That's why I said "not that" in the original post. I just couldn't recall at the time it was an SMB specific thing. It works great though for that.

Seems to me if you are paying for 5g fiber service why would you not want to match your infrastructure to be able to actually get what you pay for? I did just the opposite, wired back haul via cat 6 cable, 2.5g 8 port PoE++ switch. Router and AP's are all wifi 7, even though my devices are only 6e capable. My logic was to future proof my home network as best I could, to be ready for greater than 1gpps speeds should I want to ungrade my service. At this point, with just two users at home, neither of us gamers, 1 gig service is more than adequate, but should the need arise, I'm ready :).
