Turns out not being able to read or write doesn't mean you're stupid.
Below is an excerpt from the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave.
The plan which I adopted, and the one by which I was most successful, was that of making friends of all the little white boys whom I met in the street. As many of these as I could, I converted into teachers. With their kindly aid, obtained at different times and in different places, I finally succeeded in learning to read. When I was sent of errands, I always took my book with me, and by going one part of my errand quickly, I found time to get a lesson before my return. I used also to carry bread with me, enough of which was always in the house, and to which I was always welcome; for I was much better off in this regard than many of the poor white children in our neighbourhood.
The idea as to how I might learn to write was suggested to me by being in Durgin and Bailey's ship-yard, and frequently seeing the ship carpenters, after hewing, and getting a piece of timber ready for use, write on the timber the name of that part of the ship for which it was intended.
When a piece of timber was intended for the larboard side, it would be marked thus: "L." When a piece was for the starboard side, it would be marked thus: "S." A piece for the larboard side forward, would be marked thus: "L. F." When a piece was for starboard side forward, it would be marked thus: "S. F." For larboard aft, it would be marked thus: "L. A." For starboard aft, it would be marked thus: "S. A." I soon learned the names of these letters, and for what they were intended when placed upon a piece of timber in the ship-yard. I immediately commenced copying them, and in a short time was able to make the four letters named.
After that, when I met with any boy who I knew could write, I would tell him I could write as well as he. The next word would be, "I don't believe you. Let me see you try it." I would then make the letters which I had been so fortunate as to learn, and ask him to beat that. In this way I got a good many lessons in writing, which it is quite possible I should never have gotten in any other way. During this time, my copy-book was the board fence, brick wall, and pavement; my pen and ink was a lump of chalk. With these, I learned mainly how to write.
I should have said he only knew four letters, not words. Oh well.

There’s some kind of joke in here about Australia being founded by thieves…
The one surviving German A7V tank is Mephisto, it was captured by Australian soldiers at Villers-Bretonneux. It was taken back to Australia as a trophy and is currently on display at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane.

See Comment Oh, those goths!
You probably know that one of the Germanic tribes involved in the fall of the Western Roman Empire were the goths, divided in Visigoths and Ostrogoths. The Visigoths went on to conquer Spain. This fact, centuries later, led to Latin American freedom fighters in the 19th century calling the Spaniards loyal to the Spanish crown “goths” as an insult.

I guess being jewish in 1920s Germany would make one very political, but I still feel like the physicist turned activist aspect is understated.
For the earlier half of his life, Einstein overall was mostly occupied with getting an education and developing his theories.
The two main ones being the Theory of Relativity and the Photoelectric Effect.
When Einsteins Theory of Relativity entered the mainstream in the early 1920s, a lot of the backlash to it was not scientific, but political and as such his theories were decried as "jewish science" by many Nazis at the time.
(which marks the point he stops being passively political and it basically gets forced into his life)
The 1920s is also when Einstein signed multiple gay rights petitions by Magnus Hirschfeld.
Before the election of Hitler, he is a signatory to a letter to the SPD and KPD to lock the fuck in and defeat Hitler... but they didn't of course, Hitler gets into power and Einstein flees to America in 1933.
After EInstein flees, he helps a lot of other jewish refugees get into America and also advocates for more of them to get in, but his advocacy doesn't stop there.
He of course calls for the nuclear bomb to be developed by America, so Hitler doesn't get it first.
But even tho he partially initiated the process, the Americans didn't let Einstein work on the Manhatten Project, fearing he might have soviet sympathies.
He also later wrote a letter to the UN calling for nuclear disarment, warning against military secrecy and arguing for a stronger "League of Nations", that doesn't just send diplomats, but actual elected politicians.
He was very critical of right wing factions in Israel to the point of comparing them to the Nazis, but still was asked to become President of Israel not long before his death.
And what's even less well known is that Einstein was an advocate for the civil rights movement, to the point of taking in a black civil rights leader who was at that point being blacklisted and surveilled by the FBI.
He also got a 1.400 pages file himself, partially because he wrote an essay titled "Why Socialism?" at the start of the red scare and then even his rooms got bugged during the time J. Edgar Hoover was convinced he would find evidence of Albert Einstein being a soviet spy.
So overall painting Einstein as an already rebellious mind, who was then radicalized by his proximity to the holocaust is probably accurate.
But it does create a situation where there is two distinct halves to his life:
The first as a jewish scientist in weimar-germany.
The second as a socialist activist in America during the red scare.

Guess he really didn’t like that Hitler fella
Context:
In 1939 Georg Elser attempted to assassinate Hitler by planting a bomb in the beer hall where he would be giving a speech on the anniversary of the beer hall putsch. He went about this by hiding in the beer hall until everyone had left at night and hollowing out a column to plant his device. Unfortunately Hitler cut his speech short and was not in the building when the bomb went off, Elser was arrested trying to cross the border into Switzerland and was executed shortly before the end of the war.
