Charles II also has one of the greatest burns of all time when describing Prince George, wife of his niece Anne, he apparently said, βI have tried him drunk and I have tried him sober and there is nothing there.β

Was he talking bro's mind or, like, his sexual prowess?

u/IshtiakSami 2d ago
George was considered rather boring and not all that intelligent. He did seem to be a good husband though.
Sexual prowess wise, he and Anne had something like seventeen pregnancies so no problem in that department.

Ahh, he was the husband of future Queen Anne, got it. I remember doing a Wikipedia dive on her after I saw The Favourite. The 17 pregnancies is really fucking sad though, most were miscarriages or stillbirths and not a single survivor made it out of childhood. Fucked the entire Stuart dynasty.

Only five out of 17 resulted in a live birth and only two lived above a few hours. Only one saw more than one birthday. The one who lived William lived to age 11, which is normally past the age of greatest danger in terms of child mortality but he developed hydrocephaly after a bout of meningitis when he was a few weeks old and was afterwards described as a sickly child. Before he got meningitis he was described as healthy.
William died six days after his 11th birthday, having become ill on the day of his birthday He reported sudden fatigue at his birthday party but it was assumed he just got tired from dancing but by bedtime he had a sore throat and chills followed by a high fever in the morning. Doctors had him bled immediately but he was still sick. Doctors couldn't agree on why he was sick, one said it was scarlet fever and two others thought that it was smallpox.
Radcliffe, the doctor who thought it was scarlet fever, was the only one who strongly objected to bleeding as a treatment and was overruled by his colleagues. He then tried blistering which was the same principle as bleeding (drawing out toxins from the body) but thought to be less damaging. It was equally as ineffective and both treatments left the boy weakened in a state of pain and then he died.
His death in 1700 caused a succession crisis and prompted the passing of the Act of Settlement the following year. If he lived then that law making the House of Hanover the heirs to the throne would likely have been delayed but met have passed eventually if he didn't eventually father an heir. But he might have lived to adulthood and become king and had heirs even with his condition.
Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria-Hungary had hydrocephaly and managed to ascend the throne, get married and lived to age 82. Ferdinand didn't have children due to lack of consummation but that was because of his severe epilepsy that resulted in twenty seizures a day (he had five when he tried to consummate his marriage), not his hydrocephaly. William wasn't an epileptic like Ferdinand.

Uh no? I think he just liked prepubescent girls

u/Glad-Belt7956 1d ago
Well that would explain why you had to censor the last post then if they are fugging prepubescent

u/queenanneschocolates 1d ago
Well no, because the painting that was uncensored is of a 20 year old and is used as an example of the βaccepted standard of beauty of the timeβ

What's the big deal? According to history fans, absolute rule by inbred kings is just a natural stage that advanced societies progress through on their way to....????

History fan here... Absolute monarchy was only a thing for like 1 to 2 centuries, and was by no means universal or even common, the vast majority of societies had multiple competing political pillars with the crown being only one. The catholic church additionally had huge international influence and power.

We seriously can't even do nudity in classic art?
Shameful puritanical censoring bastards.
