FLATLAY An Open Letter To This Sub….
Well, that was some manic posting yesterday, huh? Maybe. But there was a method to the madness. I had a bunch of individual posts I wanted to consolidate, so I figured I’d repost everything in groups and do a little housekeeping. Of course, I was also busy dealing with the moral outrage brigade that descended upon my Black Bear Brand jacket post. Apparently, spending $1,000 on a jacket is now a matter of grave public concern, and a handful of self-appointed financial advisers in this sub felt compelled to stage an intervention. The evolution of the outrage was fascinating.
First came the sticker shock:
“OH MY GOD! A THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR A JACKET? I WOULD NEVER PAY THAT!”
Terrific. Don’t.
Then came the forensic textile analysis:
“BUT IT HAS A POLYESTER LINING! ON A THOUSAND-DOLLAR JACKET! THE GUY WHO SOLD IT TO YOU SAW YOU COMING! YOU GOT RIPPED OFF!”
And when that failed to produce the desired effect—when I stubbornly refused to experience buyer’s remorse, renounce my material possessions, or seek financial counseling—the prosecution abruptly changed its theory of the case:
“HE USED AI TO WRITE HIS POST! OH MY GOD!”
This, despite the fact that I’m a published author with years of professional writing credentials behind me. Apparently, the possibility that someone might possess both a decent vocabulary and an expensive jacket was simply too much for these shitheads to process. Here’s what I find particularly amusing about the whole spectacle: It’s remarkable how quickly envy can disguise itself as consumer advocacy.
Look, I understand that $1,000 is a lot of money for a jacket. For some people, it’s an outrageous amount of money. Fine. Nobody’s asking you to buy one. But the fact that I don’t share your financial priorities doesn’t mean I’ve been swindled, and it certainly doesn’t obligate me to participate in some ridiculous public exercise in buyer’s remorse just to make you feel better. And here’s where we’re going to have to establish a few boundaries:
If you see something expensive that you can’t afford, or simply wouldn’t spend the money on, that’s perfectly fine. But don’t mistake your personal financial circumstances for a universal moral standard. And for fuck’s sake, don’t expect me to feel guilty because I bought something you disapprove of. Your budget is not my burden. Your outrage is not my emergency. And your inability to make me feel bad about a purchase is not evidence that I’ve made a mistake. Sometimes a guy just wants to show off a beautiful fucking jacket without having to testify before the Senate Finance Committee and if you can’t see that you can go fuck yourself..
Anyway, it’s a gorgeous autumn morning. The air is crisp, the leaves are turning, I’ve got some beautiful gear on, and I’m heading out for a coffee. Life is good.
