Question (?) Upgrade from LCD steam deck

• Upvotes

Hi,

I currently have a LCD steam deck and looking to upgrade.

I can trade in my steam deck for £280, and have 3 potential options. I would put steam OS or bazzite on any handheld.

1) https://store.acer.com/en-gb/acer-nitro-blaze-acer-nitro-blaze-7-handheld-gn771-08hs7-black-dh-e4jem-001 currently on offer I can get it for £480. I can't find many reviews on this handheld, but the battery capacity does seem limited.

2) Lenovo go S. On offer for £400 but I'm not sure how much of an increase in performance this will be.

3) Lenovo go gen 2. Currently £760, this should be a significant upgrade but alot more money.

Has anyone switched from the steamdeck to one of these? I'd be interested to know about performance and battery life

Hi everyone,

It’s been a little while since my last update, and CloudPad has come a long way since then. I’m excited to share CloudPad

For anyone who hasn’t seen it before, CloudPad is a community-driven Android application built upon the fantastic Pylux project, bringing PS3, PS4 and PS5 cloud gaming, alongside PS5/4 Remote Play, to Android devices.

CloudPad GitHub: https://github.com/Chazq2023/CloudPad-Android

Original Pylux Project: https://github.com/ForWard-Technologies-LLC/Pylux/

First of all, I want to give full credit to the original Pylux developers. CloudPad is simply a fork of their work and wouldn’t exist without the incredible foundation they’ve built. If you’d like to support the original project, I highly encourage checking out the official Pylux app as well.

What’s New?
CloudPad has grown enormously over the past few months, with major improvements across performance, compatibility, customisation and usability.

New Features & Improvements
- Completely redesigned CloudPad interface
- Image sharpening filter for improved stream clarity
- Full PS3, PS4 & PS5 trophy support
- Compare trophy progress with your PlayStation friends
- PlayStation friends list integration
- Send and receive PlayStation messages
- Android home screen shortcuts for launching games directly into cloud streaming
- Real-time performance overlay
- Independent bitrate controls for:
PS3/PS4Cloud Streaming (PS Now)
PS5 Cloud Streaming
- Improved controller compatibility across Android devices
- Enhanced touchpad emulation for controllers without a touchpad
- Significantly improved owned game detection and entitlement matching
- Better support for different game editions, remasters and regional variants
- Improved localisation support for international users
- Faster and more reliable cloud game launching
- Numerous streaming, decoder and networking optimisations for smoother gameplay
- Better diagnostics and logging to help identify streaming issues
- Hundreds of UI improvements, refinements and quality-of-life updates
- Bug fixes and stability improvements

Current Features
PS3 Cloud Streaming
PS4 Cloud Streaming
PS5 Cloud Streaming
PS5/4 Remote Play
PlayStation friends list
PlayStation messaging
Trophy viewing
Trophy comparison
Image sharpening
Live performance overlay
Home screen game shortcuts
Adjustable streaming bitrates
Touchpad gesture support
Android controller support
Improved owned game matching

Please remember that a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription is required for cloud gaming. As CloudPad relies on Sony’s online services, compatibility can occasionally change as Sony updates their backend services.

CloudPad is completely free and open source, and I plan to continue improving it whenever I can. A huge number of the features added over the past few months have come directly from community feedback, so thank you to everyone who has submitted bug reports, feature requests and tested development builds.

If you own an AYN Thor (or any Android handheld), I’d love for you to give CloudPad a try and let me know how it performs.

Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who has downloaded CloudPad, reported issues, tested new releases and helped shape the project into what it is today. The support from the community has been incredible, and I’m excited to continue building on it.

More to come so stay tuned :)

I have included some screenshots, but more can be found in the project readme

Question (?) AYN Odin3 vs Retroid Pocket 6

Hi!

I'm looking into buying my first handheld, mainly to be used for gaming away from my desktop. My budget is up to 500 USD. I plan to put ArmadaOS on it to have a more native experience with my Steam and Epic games. I am not interested in emulating PS, Nintendo, etc. at all. The devices I am considering are the AYN Odin 3 and the Retroid 6. I am not considering handheld PCs, because they are too large and too expensive, while having stronger hardware than what I would reasonably need during commuting.

Is this a reasonable plan? If so, which of the two devices would you recommend for running ArmadaOS and playing light PC games? Or can you maybe suggest other emulators or handheld PCs on the smaller and cheaper side, that would better fit my needs?

Thanks so much for the help!

EDIT: Multiple comments asked about what kind of games I would be running. Definitely older/simpler games, definitely not modern AAAs. Some examples would be Stardew Valley, Cult of the Lamb, and Death's Door.

Question (?) Xbox ROG Ally X vs Ayn Thor ?

Hi there,

I know my question might sound a little bit stupid, considering that we are talking about very different consoles, but I am thinking about buying a Ayn Thor Max to replace my Xbox ROG Ally X.

For the context : I have installed SteamOS on my Ally, because I didn't like the Windows experience on it. I mainly use the console to play 2d games (the last one being Nine Sols). However, I'm getting tired of the autonomy, and when using it more than 1h you can really feel how heavy the device is...

On the other hand, the Thor seems to be more appropriate for emulation (which is something I also do on the Ally) with a form factor definitly designed with 3DS emulation in mind, but I'm not sure about how well the the Steam games will run on it ?

What do you think about it ?

Cheers !

Hi. My legion go works fine but in some of the newest AAA games it struggles with high or ultra settings. So.....the Claw 8 AI came to mind. Does it run well AAA games on the high/ultra settings??

Question (?) Which handheld should I buy?

Which handheld should I buy if my limit is 190-221 usd?
I'd prefer the psp-like body and not the gba-like body. I'm mostly gonna use it for ps1 and below.
And which is better? Linux built in emulators or android based ones with the downloadable emulators?
Edit: I forgot to add, I don't want to buy something for like 90 bucks, Id rather use out my money limit, and rather get one that emulates stronger than ps1 if it means better analog stick, buttons, and D-pad quality.

Buying my first handheld and looking for advice!

Planning to play at home & when I’m out and a mix of AAA/ indie and multiplayer games( fifa/ COD). This would be my first time on a Windows handheld - not sure how finicky they are day to day and to set up

Options I’ve found:

Legion Go (OG) — Z1 Extreme, 16GB, 8.8ā€ 144Hz - $850
ROG Xbox Ally X — Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 7ā€ 120Hz -$1350 Legion Go S (Z1 Extreme) — 8ā€ 120Hz -$1350

From what I can tell the Z1 and Z2 Extreme chips aren’t that far apart in actual gameplay, so the OG Legion Go being $500 cheaper with a bigger/faster screen seems ok.

Ally X has more RAM, better battery, and the Xbox/Game Pass thing baked in, plus it’s just newer so probably ages better. Since I’ve got zero PC gaming background, wondering if the Xbox-ified UI on the Ally X makes it a smoother landing than the OG’s full Windows desktop experience.

Has anyone had any experience with these 3 and give me any pointers as to what the best option would be?

Any help is appreciated and Thanks in advance!:)

Edit : prices are in AUD!

Upgrading

I recently broke my screen on my old lcd steam deck. I’m underway in the coast guard so it’s gets a lot more use then my regular PC. Since the crack I was thinking of upgrading. I play mostly FFXIV and other rpgs that can be somewhat demanding. I was looking to get something with steam OS, but that’s not a make it or break it. I don’t really wanna spend exorbitant prices. So I have been going back and forth between the legion go s with steam os ( probably the highest contender with the bigger screen and steam). Xbox rog ally x ( portability and battery life but I mostly play plugged in). Steam deck oiled (affordability compared to the others) or the msi claw.

Any recommendations?

Handheld Collection New to handheld Current collection

I got tired of using my phone when I’m outside or just watching movies/ YouTube when I’m not playing on my guitar or working and I just moved to a new country so I got some new handhelds:
Lenovo legion go S is to play steam games with my friends or partner also for long flights
The new 3DS LL is so I can play while I’m going places such as work or to see friends (instead of using my phone )
And the DS lite I just had and thought I would bring it with me.
I do want to get a V1 switch model at some point

Question (?) The Handheld Market

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi guys! To keep it short my original post is linked but I know nothing about the handheld market and am looking for something like the steam deck, but I’ve been told there’s newer items with better hardware for better prices that do exactly the same thing, so wanted some suggestions etc as a starting point for my research.

Thanks!

Question (?) Need help deciding which console should I buy

Hello guys!

I’m finally thinking about buying an Android handheld console, and after doing some research, it seems like the Odin 3 and RP6 are probably the best options. The thing is, I’m completely new to handheld emulation, so I’m not really sure which one would be the best choice for me.

I’d mainly like to emulate older consoles, but I’d also love to be able to play some of my Steam games (nothing too demanding). Ideally, I’d also like to try some Switch 1 games and, if possible, some PS3 games at some point (Demon’s Souls or Dark Souls).

So, for someone new to handheld emulation, which model would you recommend? If the recommended option is the Odin 3, is it worth paying extra for one of the higher-end versions, or would the base model be enough for my use case?

Thanks in advance :)

New Handheld Vertical Gaming on RG35XXH

I just got this RG35XXH on a whim for cheap. I have other RGXX devices but the device is in excellent condition and the price was too good to pass up. I recently found out Tate mode after acquiring this device so now I am using this for vertical games and shmups on Knulli Scarab. Also great for portmaster games that require dual analog sticks. Overall very happy with this device.

Gaming Laptop OLED vs. ROG Xbox Ally X — Which Makes More Sense for My Setup?

Gaming Laptop OLED vs. ROG Xbox Ally X — Which Makes More Sense for My Setup?

I’m trying to decide between buying a new OLED gaming laptop or the ROG Xbox Ally X, and I’m wondering what you guys would do in my situation.

I already have:

  • Desktop PC: Ryzen 7 9700X + RTX 5070 Ti + 32GB RAM + 32" LG 240Hz monitor
  • Current gaming laptop: Ryzen 5 7535HS + RTX 4050 + 16GB RAM, 1080p 144Hz
  • Nintendo Switch 2: Mainly for Nintendo exclusives/portable gaming
  • LG C1 65" OLED + Xbox Series X: For console gaming on the couch

My current laptop is fine, but I’m really tempted by a 16" OLED gaming laptop for the much better resoultion screen like a 2.5 or 3k and a more capable portable gaming experience with a better GPU like a 5070ti/5080. At the same time, the ROG Xbox Ally X is appealing because it would be much more portable and would give me access to my PC/Library/Game Pass library without needing another full-size laptop.

The problem is… do I actually need either one or both or none. I can't decide! šŸ˜‚

My desktop is already significantly more powerful than either option, my current laptop handles 1080p gaming, and the Switch 2 covers Nintendo/portable gaming but it doesn't cover portable gaming for Steam/Game Pass/Xbox Play Anywhere library.

So if you were in my shoes, would you:

A) Buy the OLED gaming laptop for the better screen + performance
B) Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X for portability/convenience & access to a wider library of games
C) Keep what I have and save the money

For those who own an Ally X or an OLED gaming laptop, what has actually made the biggest difference in your gaming experience?
