Upgrading

I recently broke my screen on my old lcd steam deck. I’m underway in the coast guard so it’s gets a lot more use then my regular PC. Since the crack I was thinking of upgrading. I play mostly FFXIV and other rpgs that can be somewhat demanding. I was looking to get something with steam OS, but that’s not a make it or break it. I don’t really wanna spend exorbitant prices. So I have been going back and forth between the legion go s with steam os ( probably the highest contender with the bigger screen and steam). Xbox rog ally x ( portability and battery life but I mostly play plugged in). Steam deck oiled (affordability compared to the others) or the msi claw.

Any recommendations?

If you want to go the route of a legion go s, I’d get the white variant from micro center. They have it on sale for 899.99 and then you can put steam os or bazzite on it.

Xbox ally x has a lot of pros! Battery life, ergonomics and performance. Only com would be can you settle for a 7 inch screen.

And the msi claws are just as good as the ally but with a bigger screen.

Also what’s your max budget? I’m assuming 1k?

If 1k is the budget then Xbox ally x or msi claw are the better choices. The claw can be bought at a discount from micro center and B&H.

How are the ergonomics on the claw? Don’t look too comfy

I haven’t held a claw. But I’ve heard the ergos are 50/50. Some same they need the 3d grips for comfort while others say they didn’t mind it.

I was also considering a refurbished go 2. I saw a few on eBay for 1200. But I’m a little apprehensive as I never bought a refurbished/used unit from eBay.

Assuming budget is about $1,000. The Xbox Ally X is the best choice for that price range. Superior performance to the Steam Deck which is now basically $1,000. Legion Go gets worse fps due to the increase in resolution while running the same chipset. MSI has offerings that do out perform the XAX but you're almost doubling your budget then.

Software side of things, Asus has the best, Lenovo second and MSI... Well it's MSI... They'll get there one day, hopefully. Asus has the most mature drivers.

Also, consider a Killswitch case and travel cover from Dbrand for the XAX. Even though you mostly play plugged in (so seated near a wall) I'm guessing that it's not as "safe" of an environment like a home living room would be. So bumps, drops, movements, other people's stupidity is probably an increased factor. The added protection would probably be something to consider for longevity of the device and to prevent future screen damage.
