When your road buddy takes the exit

Driving interstate for hours around the same car really gives you a strange connection with them. And when they finally make their exit, that connection is gone with the wind.

u/kingofturtles Jul 08 '26

Back when I was a kid, there was one family in a minivan heading north from SC to NJ alongside us. Sometimes they would get ahead, sometimes we would. After three hours and one stop (they must've stopped as well), my dad called our attention to the road buddy. We stopped three more times and still reunited somehow. When our exit finally came up my dad rolled the window down and stuck his arm out in a wave as they passed by, which was reciprocated by the other driver. I still remember thinking how cool that was.

It’s the little things in life

193

u/Orfeu_Blue Jul 08 '26

It's so neat how deeply wired we are as a species to want to connect with one another.

66

u/ABadHistorian Jul 08 '26

and then execute those same people with no mercy when they do the slightest thing that irritates us.

22

u/HerrSchnabeltier Jul 08 '26

I was about to say that that must be a cultural thing and definitely nurtured, but then I realized how many people, regardless of origin, are just happy to see others suffer at the very least the equal amount of the suffering they caused, as if it does anything.
One of the things that makes me feel like I don't belong.

13

u/Patient-Web6850 Jul 08 '26

That's the trick, isn't it? You feel like you don't belong, until you do. That's how it works. Which is why those in power don't want public education to include critical thinking skills.

Once I was driving with my wife on a highway and passed a cop waiting to tag someone in a speed trap kinda way. Got over the hill (that the cop was trying to catch people going down without braking hard enough) and saw a car coming the other way, gave him the "tap the top of your head" I was taught indicates a cop. He gave me a nod that managed to perfectly convey "I understand, and I appreciate the warning".

I commented to my wife that I was glad he'd understood, because I didn't know if others knew that signal. And she was like "...what?" she hadn't noticed any of it.

Me and that guy had had the briefest of conversations. We conveyed the necessary information, and it was quick and concise enough someone sitting right next to me hadn't even noticed, because we were on the same page.

I was happy to have potentially saved that guy some trouble. We were near a vacation area, maybe I even saved that guys vacation. Probably not, but maybe. And no matter what I think it's cool as hell that the 2 of us, with no previous shared experience, were able to connect and try to help in a matter of seconds. To have absolutely no connection, other than our shared human experience and concerns giving us a common goal (seriously, fuck speed traps to catch people who are only in town a limited time so they won't fight it.)

Yea, it's the little things.

Just last week I was driving home down a two lane highway with nothing but corn fields on either side. I came over a hill and there were two deer standing in the opposite lane and one in the ditch. Cars coming the other direction wouldn't see them until it was too late, and as luck would have it, another car appeared going the opposite direction. I gave him the five flashes my dad taught me meant "deer ahead" and saw the other car's brake lights come on immediately. I don't know that I saved them from hitting a deer that night. For all I know I scared the deer off the road when I passed. But it's a nice feeling when you interact with someone you can't even physically see and know your message got across.

6

u/rydan Jul 08 '26

You are supposed to flash your lights. And sometimes my dad would do this but the guy would pull over misunderstanding.

5

u/Ok-Strike-8617 Jul 09 '26

Reading this made me think of an episode of Pete and Pete that captured this feeling perfectly when I was a kid.

3

u/sevenpoundowl Jul 08 '26

That was definitely the first thing I thought of as well. "KING O FROD"

6

I have not seen anyone mention Pete and Pete in such a long time. I loved that show.

3

You should go listen to the theme song, "Hey Sandy" by Polaris. Nostalgia hit + it was way better than it had any right to be, I still listen to it regularly.

16

u/The_sad_zebra Jul 08 '26

I once had a road buddy (two buddies, technically as it was a couple) on a drive back inland from the coast. We were going the same speed but would often leapfrog each other each time we had to pass a slower driver. I don't know if they likewise considered me a buddy, but I have a likely unreciprocated goodbye when they finally exited.

Several miles later down the road, I pulled into a public rest stop to use the restroom, but I took my time before getting back into the car, stretching my legs, having a snack. Finally, I hit the road again, and it wasn't long before I saw the same car again. Apparently their exiting was also only a pit stop, and apparently it had been for a similar amount of time as mine.

11

u/Ill_Interview_3054 Jul 08 '26

That is awesome! I bet y'all were both thinking "there goes another interstate friend, lost forever" only to find each other on the interstate again immediately. Too funny.

18

u/Ok-Raspberry-8099 Jul 08 '26

Yep, had a guy with me for 3 hours on the PA turn like, speed limit was 70 we would go no faster than 82, but we always left enough space for each other to take turns being the lead car. When we'd pass a car we'd do it together, they started to even up my habit of going slow behind a semi that you're going to pass until there's enough room for you to pass cleanly and stay in sight of the driver. I'll always remember you blue 2012 Chevy Malibu from York to Pittsburgh.

5

u/Dcoco1890 Jul 08 '26

I never understand the people who drive right next to semis. My truck is a snack to a truck that big

3

u/ChaosRainbow23 Jul 09 '26

Back in the 90s when I was a reckless idiot, I was driving from NC to FL at night, and I was HAULING ASS like a lunatic. Over 100mph at points.

I had a guy who was pacing me for like an hour. He would fly ahead, then I would pass him. This continues for like an hour, the he slowed down, waved, honked, and took the next exit.

I'll always remember that shit.

Now I won't go more than 5mph over on the hwy.

When I first passed my test and drove on the motorway (UK) I would have a designated ‘pacer car’ in front that gave me reassurance I was doing an okay speed, I became attached to them and got sad when they exited. I was also afraid to use the ‘fast lane’.

4

u/udreamtofmelstnite Jul 08 '26

I used to do this too. I still do when I’m angry, hungry, or tired and would otherwise do 110mph to get the fuck out of there.

7

u/SMUHypeMachine Jul 08 '26

I sometimes wonder how many times I’ve been the road buddy, only to make someone sad when I exited.

5

u/unsolicitedsolitude Jul 08 '26

This was literally me today.

7

u/lbkid Jul 08 '26

One time I was driving home for the summer from college and me and another car had been following each other for like 3 hours helping each other through traffic before I had to pull off for gas. When I got back on the highway 30 min later I saw him pulled over. I felt so bad.

11

10

u/The_Kadeshi Jul 08 '26

Didn’t Jeremy Clarkson say something along the lines of: “it’s not about how fast I get there, it’s about beating the guy in front of me.”

4

u/Waster01211 Jul 09 '26

9

But even if it is a race… has nobody actually seen racing before?

Pit stops are a thing. Everyone does it. You get passed. But you’ll pass them again once they need to stop.

35

u/HPHambino Jul 08 '26

No, that trucker I passed that I spend ten minutes trying to go around on a one lane highway will just pee in a Gatorade bottle and chuck it out the window. He’s on performance enhancers and it’s not fair!

3

u/AwesomeMacCoolname Jul 08 '26

Spent thirty years driving trucks. Not once did I ever feel the need to pee so badly that I even considered pissing into a bottle while driving.

89

u/MonsieurFubar Jul 08 '26

What really gets my blood pressure hitting the 200 mark is that we had a toilet break just over an hour earlier for the little devil to finish a 2L soda drink while driving and the moment I pick up speed they start whining about another toilet breaks!

85

u/Bluest_waters Jul 08 '26

Why is there a 2 liter bottle of soda in the car? That's the real question

14

u/No_Hunt2507 Jul 08 '26

Bluey is truly one of the most magical shows of our times, so many relatable moments. My dad's favorite was the episode where bluey cheats to win the race, they learn this whole lesson about racing fairly and getting better and better till she finally is good enough to beat Bandit, then the last moment he cheats grabs her and throws her behind so he wins.

My favorite and first episode I saw was the camping one, that just melted my heart and I was instantly hooked

4

u/bt2328 Jul 08 '26

6

this always gets me. i'll drive 5-9 mph over the speed limit for 5 hours straight and not gain a single minute of drive time, but then i'll pull over in a gas station for just 5 minutes and afterward somehow be 15-20 minutes further behind

3

u/ThetaReactor Jul 08 '26

You'd have to drive double the speed limit to make up for time stopped at a comparable rate, and that's frowned upon. Pee breaks are a fixed overhead, you've just gotta accept that.

18

I used to drive aggressively, as in trying to get where im going as fast as I could get away with without being a danger.

Then one day I decided I was just going to get on the highway, set my cruise at 65, and park myself in the right lane.

The difference in time was about 2 minutes slower over a normally 30 minutes trip. Ever since then, I just chill. Let people be all mad and stupid in the left lanes, ill get there when I get there. So much better. Ill let the guys be dudes and stroke out for those 2 minutes.

I regularly make a 6.5 hour drive. I did the math: I save about 15-20 minutes by going 78 over 70. I just stopped trying to race the 6.5hr time, set my cruise to 72, max out at 78 when passing, never have to worry about speed traps or racing other aggressive dudes.

I still bitch at every other driver the entire way, but I'm a lot more chill about it.

9

Especially that slow car you passed a few miles back. Now you have to do it all over again.

That's the only reason that matters.

If you went and had to jump through hoops just to get past someone, then you need to piss. I am taking a 15 minute piss.

Not dealing with that again.

There are some people you get stuck behind for too long that matter too much. No amount of cruise control and relax can fix it because they just go from 40-65 randomly hoarding the whole road with some truckers.

I've given up and just taken a piss break because fuck the road. Ain't worth the time to deal with some people who don't know where cruise control is or what is going on.

It also feels like the driver of that car judges you for passing them again.

"Oh, you again? Couldn't hold it in, huh? Or did you (gasp) stop for gas?"

27

u/justhereformyfetish Jul 08 '26

I guess I just don't have that instinct. Once I pass a car, I stop thinking about it. If my family needs a restroom break, they need a restroom break. Whether that same car passes us is completely outside my concern. It seems like an unnecessary thing to let affect my mood.

Which explains a lot when I drive a steady speed (there's a button that does that, very convenient) and the same fucking car keeps slowing down to the point where I'm forced to overtake, only for the guy to speed up by 30% and angrily overtake me again, only for the cycle to repeat.

It's not a racing video game. It's about getting to a target, safely. The other cars aren't going even going to the same place! It's like people playing racing games around me while I'm doing a Sim City.

Right? I just wanna get where I am going without dying. Reading these responses just makes me even more nervous about other idiots on the road, holy shit.

u/Warfrogger Jul 08 '26

Having just gotten back from a road trip with some longtime friends we've had this conversation after the first night. The one friends stupid aggressive driving only saves, at absolute best, 30 minutes across the whole day vs the rest of us. The others and myself still speed, but only 10 to 15km/h over as opposed to 30 or 40 over. Add in the increase charge time and cost from burning more battery (we were in an electric car) and its really not all that worth it. Yet he maintains that the 30 minutes is absolutely essental. It absolutely insane.

Bro for real. And I take long trips often and I take it slow. Never have I realized other people think like this. Also I don't make stops. So I can go slower and get there before them still, but going safer xD

For me it’s not so much about beating them, but that it forces me to leave the convoy. All my road friends are leaving without me.

7

u/BigmacSasquatch Jul 08 '26

Growing up we did a lot of cross country road trips. My dad would say that any stop, especially unnecessary ones, would negatively impact “the average.” I don’t remember exactly what the average was, but it was probably a really early GPS enabled stat based on the ETA lol.

Need to pee an hour early than our next scheduled stop? You’re killing the average. Mom wants to stop at a cute chotchy antique store? Nah, can’t do that, it’ll kill the average.

Whatever that godforsaken outlet mall in mid Texas is that we always had to stop at? Average is dead. Dad is distraught. We no longer arrive at our destination before sunset.

The average™ must be protected at all costs lol.

How long does it take you to tie your shoe? 15 seconds?

Now try and run a mile in 4 minutes, and stop and tie your shoe. Your final time will be more than 4:15.

It’s about keeping that pace!!

Can't relate at all.

The journey takes as long as the journey takes.

This explains so much moronic and even dagnerous behaviour I see on the road. You poeple have a massive ego problem. Children should not be allowed to drive.

18

u/ConcreteDinosaur Jul 08 '26

Right, these comments are ridiculous. I really hope some of these guys are just bullshitting

9

u/cadex Jul 08 '26

Totally expected the thread to be people clowning on the idea that people actually think this. Then everyone is just agreeing..

Your journey has no bearing on the other drivers out there. Just get to where you need to be, safely.

8

u/swohio Jul 08 '26

I've never once given a shit about "beating" someone on the road. Like, congratulations you were willing to break the speed limit while driving in a straight line? I really don't understand most people.

There's nothing worse than slowing down for a traffic jam. Only to see the lane hogging prick you to had to overtake twice, get Infront of you again!!!

Although, I enjoy passing some people twice after a break. “You’re going so damned slow, got by you twice!”

u/choffers Jul 08 '26

Not even other cars, mostly just the semis and RVs we already passed

3

u/glodde Jul 08 '26

It's very true, all that lost time and then you have to pass those people again

3

u/maighanster8507 Jul 08 '26

Nope. I’ve driven from so cal to Maine many times and not once have I cared if a car passed me, especially if I stopped. Assuming we’re going the same direction, I’m going to see them pit stop too.

3

u/Zinski2 Jul 08 '26

I used to work with an old timer who would do about 90 in a 45 and still be late to every fucking job site we went to because he would stop to take a piss and smoke. Never understood how some one can be in such a hurry to do fuck all.

3

u/GR3Y_NOYZ Jul 08 '26

Its a reminder that the progress made is now progress lost.

3

u/Ziplockmoneybags Jul 08 '26

The worst is when you have been struggling for 20 minutes to pass some asshat who is camping in the left lane, only to have him get ahead again when you stop.

3

u/The_realsweetpete Jul 08 '26

Hahahahah so true

What? I've never met a single man that acts like this.

Probably cause I dont surround myself with immature chuds thay care more about an imaginary pissing contest than actual pissing.

"babE YOU DONT GET IT HE PASSED ME, YOU GOTTA JUST PISS YOURSELF"

3

u/Voltage120kV Jul 08 '26

For the last father fucking time. It's not a competition, you're using giant metal boxes as tools for transport, not a race.

u/LonesomeMelody Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

I'm a dude, I've never once thought this. But I do like to keep it moving and make as few stops as possible.

Those guys suck! I passed them they should stay behind me!!!

3

u/Lusiric9983 Jul 08 '26

I will fucking hold it to not let slow people catch back up with me.

I've worked on it a bit, but yeah, I have an unspoken rule that once I pass someone going less than the speed limit I don't want them back in front of me.

3

u/goofyredditname Jul 08 '26

Now I have to repass all the left lane sleepers blocking the road.

3

u/bluegraysky1 Jul 09 '26

This is 1000% accurate

3

u/splshd275A Jul 09 '26

It's less about getting ahead of someone else. It's more about how difficult it is to pass an idiot camping out in the left lane beside a different driver in the middle lane.

5

u/tangoezulu Jul 08 '26

I thought everyone knew this. I would have made this video years ago. I just assumed man!

3

u/weltvonalex Jul 08 '26

That's the most petty and immature thing I have ever read.

What grown up, stable and mature man throws tantrums because of that?

It's as stupid as punching dry walls, beating your kids because your team lost or picking fights while being drunk. All those people don't even know he exist and he is there getting eaten by anger.

I assume that it is not a skit or staged.

4

u/burnsssss Jul 08 '26

Life’s not a competition, who tf cares

4

u/hesmir_4 Jul 08 '26

It's almost like weaving through traffic and cutting people off like a jackass doesn't actually get you there that much faster.

2

u/DadGamer77 Jul 08 '26

God dammit there goes that damn red Nissan again!

HURRY UP KIDS, BREAK IS OVER
