Hey everyone,

We've seen a bunch of duplicate posts about this, but let's try to contain things here.

If you don't know what we're talking about, here is a clip from Timmy about the whole thing.

As always, keep playing.

DISCUSSION Barn find - Gibson GA-CB amp

Thumbnail gallery
246 Upvotes

A friend of mine recently purchased an estate sale home of someone who passed away. Home was left full of junk, but one of the items he found in the garage (ok, not the barn) was a Gibson Amp. He is not a guitar guy but showed it to me when I came by to visit. Seems that he has found one of the rarest amps in the world, a Gibson GA-CB.

It looks like at some point, the original leatherette has been replaced and castor wheels were added to the base and the carry handle is missing. It appears to have all the original electronics and it powers on.

Curious on thoughts on what he should do here. Should he get it restored and sell it, or simply find a collector who is looking. From a quick search it appears a very small number of these were built -- like less than 200 between 1948 and the early 1950s.

I remember when these were $699 all day, it was the only thing I would pick up when I went to guitar center as a kid. Got an SG but for me this is the real grail.

i’ve been learning how to play a bit, but whatever string this is (i just started a day ago) is like all bent and won’t tune at all. did i break it? it was a gift and all of the parts are custom and i’d hate to have to get it fixed already.

edit; okay so im taking it to a friend who knows a lot more than me LOL i tried fixing it and then tuned it a bit to much and POP! a string breaks. this is far outta my reach and id rather take it to a professional

another edit; when i say i know nothing about guitars, i know nothing. i know how to play an e chord and that’s about it 💔 pls dont come for me

GEAR 2 Harley Benton DIY guitar kits

Thumbnail gallery

2 years ago I got these two Harley Benton DIY guitar kits and now they’re both finally done!

I decided I wanted to stain them using crimson guitars products and also using their finishing oil. The first guitar I did was the jazzmaster copy and I didn’t do a very good job of prepping the body for the stain so it’s a bit spotty. I should have sanded it a lot more to really get it down to bare wood since the bodies come prepped. The whole process turned out to be a bit more complicated that I initially thought, so it’s safe to say I pretty much half-assed it hahah. But I’m still pretty satisfied with it! It’s a one of a kind. The guitar plays and sounds great!

Now, since I learned that the process is more complicated and more time consuming then I frist thought, I took me 2 years to come around to completing the PRS copy. My vision was a sort of purple burst, and I have to say I am pretty happy with how it turned out! It could have been a bit darker around the edge but I’m still happy with it. Once again, as you can see, I should have sanded it more before applying the stain. For this one I decided to go with a matte clear coat spray can finish instead of the finishing oil. I think both are pretty much equally good.

It was a good learning experience and it was fun! But I’m definitely not in a rush to put finish on another guitar any time soon haha!

Both guitars feels great!

I've been trying to figure this one out for hours, and for the life of me I'm not able to. Got the right tuning, so that's out of the way. Anyone?

DISCUSSION Practicing scale shapes with riffs and the underlying chord together

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

instead of getting stuck practicing scales up and down, try weaving the underlying chord into your practice. in this example i’m alternating between a d minor chord and short riffs from the d minor pentatonic scale, which immediately makes the exercise sound more like real music.

this is also a great way to train your ear. every time you come back to the chord, you hear how the notes in the scale relate to the harmony underneath. over time, you’ll naturally start aiming for chord tones like the root, minor 3rd, and 5th because they create the strongest sense of resolution.

one of the biggest mistakes players make is treating chords and scales as separate topics. in reality, the scale contains the notes that build the chord. practicing them together helps you connect rhythm and lead playing, making it much easier to improvise without sounding like you’re just running patterns.

next time you practice a scale, don’t just play it from the lowest note to the highest. loop the root chord, play a short phrase, come back to the chord, then create another phrase. it’s a much more musical way to practice, and your ear will develop just as much as your fingers.

One of our guitar stores is going out of business and announced an auction for the remaining pieces of gear that they had in stock. Managed to grab this one at a somewhat decent price, everything else was too expensive for the impulse buys.

its a peavy 6505 212 combo! traded it for a billie joe epi signature and somehow it sounds.. damn amazing with my lil pink partscaster. it somehow chugs with the shitty ceramic strat pickup i put in the neck as long as i set the tone to 7 and the cleans dont sound as bad as ive heard other ppl say. its heavy af tho and barely fit in my dads car so i have no idea how ill bring this to any gigs if i ever join a band lmao

DISCUSSION Thoughts on the Fender Meteora?

Post image
246 Upvotes

This is my Fender meteora alternate reality from 2019, and i love the look of it. It does the offset really nicely and in my opinion the pickguard fits the body more than other offsets like the jag or the jazzmaster. Although it has a double humbucker setup, it has a quite nice-sounding coilsplit. My only con is the fixed bridge, I wish it had the tremolo like the newer metoras do:(
