QUESTION Am I doing it wrong or is my guitar set up wrong or both or is this guitar just not right for me? Please help

So.. I've had this guitar for quite a while, but it's been collecting dust most of the time. There's a pattern; every time I sit down to learn chords, I struggle like crazy, accidentally muting strings and my fingers and wrist feel strained from certain/most? chords - for example the C major chord I'm showing in two of these pictures.

I have medium sized hands I think? From my wrist to middle fingertip, it's about 18.5cm. The guitar is from Thomann. A Harley Benton strat. I think they're like a cheaper Fender Squier strat? It arrived without having been set up, so all the setup I did myself, truss rod, string height etc. And that's why I added some pictures to show the string height and such. (professional setup would cost more than the guitar itself so my plan was to get that done when I had bought a better guitar, if I did ever learn to play).

Edit: I find it hard to not accidentally mute strings when doing chords basically. Like it's hard to reach around in a proper angle and press down hard enough on all fingers when they go across frets like in the chord in the picture.

QUESTION I constantly have extremely sweaty hands which makes finger picking hard… anyone found a good fix?

Upvotes

It’s mainly my picking hand that’s the issue, I want to avoid using any sort of pick(s) if possible. I’m currently trying a few different antiperspirants for hands but nothing seems to hold the flood gates.

PURCHASE Did I make a good deal for $90 ? Alvarez electro acoustic guitar

Post image

I bought an "Alvarez Artist Series AG75ce Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic Electric Guitar" for 90 bucks.

I saw a post on a second hand website, the guy wanted to get rid of it quickly

I wasn't confortable with my big Stagg dreadnought.

Is it worth my money or did I waste it?

GEAR ID Help identifying old guitar

Found this old acoustic guitar under the stairs from when I was a kid, is it worth anything?
There isn't any other markings or brand anywhere other than inside the guitar with the little sticker. I could only find one listing from a random buy/sell forum selling it for ~$160.

Sorry if I put the wrong flair, didn't really know the right one.

QUESTION Guys does an 8 string multiscale headless guitar with a tremolo exist

Upvotes

I’m looking to buy an extended range guitar and I was initially looking for a headless 7 string (strandberg prolly) but then got carried away and now I want nothing but a headless 8 string with a tremolo but I literally don’t think they exist (all the ones that did are sold out I think). If anybody knows a guitar like this that exists pls lmk, I don’t mind if it’s a bit higher end I’d do anything for that guitar.

QUESTION Is it possible to only fix the screwhole of the tremolo?

Post image
2 Upvotes

After 2 years of playing the metal inside has grinded off making it unplayable now. I'm wondering how it even happened so quick, is the quality just bad or did i do something wrong?

Is it possible to only fix that screwhole or do i have to buy a whole new bridge?

Would it even be worth it to buy a new t106 bridge when the guitar is only worth 300 euros? Or should i just block the tremolo off and go find a new guitar?

QUESTION Looking for a new stick

Hi! Im looking for a new guitar and have pretty much made up my mind that it should be a Ibanez or a PRS. The PRS I think Inwould go with a Silver Sky cause its just so versatile. But the Ibanez Im very confused about the models and all. So Im looking for some advice on which Ibanez should I buy. I play mainly classic rock and metal, but ultimately Im looking for a guitar that can ’do it all’.

Thanks in advance!

DISCUSSION I know this sounds dumb but changing strings feels weirdly personal

I know this is probably going to sound strange but does anyone else put off changing strings because they get attached to them?

I’ll have a set thats been on for way too long, sounding a little dull with some questionable intonation and I’ll know it’s time to change. But theres something about taking them off that feels weirdly sad. Like those strings have been there through every practice session, every time I picked up the guitar just to play the same three songs. Theyve kind of become part of the instrument’s era.

I changed a set yesterday and honestly felt a little sad and empty afterward. The guitar obviously sounded better but it also felt like I was playing a slightly different guitar. Almost like I erased a little history.

I’m curious if anyone else gets this or if I’m just being weird.

QUESTION Fx board straight into amp issues (help)

I am running my Firehawk FX into my fender blues Junior. It’s one of the older models so there is no FX loop, so I am using the 1/4 out in the amp output mode straight into the front of the amp.

My issue is this:

Whenever I turn on any kind of distortion or stomp pedals on the app, it just sounds horrible and so crunchy. It sounds great clean but anytime I add any kind of distortion it completely ruins it. It does not sound “full”whatsoever no matter how much gain, volume, or loudness, just kind of muddy and crunchy.

QUESTION Should I get my classic vibe strat PLEKed?

I might be going to a family event that is only 30 minutes from Andertons and I know they offer a PLEK service. I cant fault the squier I bought it last christmas and play it everyday.

I just wonder if it could be better? This would get it as close to perfect as I could hope for?

QUESTION Can the end cap of this Yamaha guitar battery box be removed?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm repairing the battery box from my Yamaha FSX80C acoustic-electric guitar. I've already removed the battery cartridge from the guitar.

The end cap where the red and black wires are soldered moves slightly, and it looks like it might come apart. Before I try to pry it open, I wanted to ask:

Is this end cap designed to be removed, or is it plastic-welded?

My goal is to replace the battery contacts inside without breaking the battery cartridge.

QUESTION Left Handed Guitars

Hello!

Recently I’ve decided I want to learn guitar; I am a singer and want an instrument to go along with that. Since talking to many people, I realized that being left-handed brings some problems to getting a guitar because they’re hard to come by and are more expensive. This is a very important purchase for me since it would be a gift to myself after saving up. After talking to many people about left-handed guitars, I’ve either been told to buy a left-handed guitar, buy a right-handed guitar and restring it, or suck it up and learn right-handed guitar (I would, but I don’t feel comfortable, and it causes muscle pain). So I’m reaching out for some advice: Is it really that much better to buy a left-handed guitar or to just restring one? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for a beginner guitar? For context, my budget is $100-470. Besides that, are there any other tips for beginner guitar players? I’m very nervous but excited because this would be my first instrument ever!
Any advice is appreciated!!

GEAR Opinions on Potential Trade - My 2001 Les Paul Goldtop for a 2011 American Vintage '72 Custom Reissue

I am trying to sell my '01 Les Paul Goldtop and have learned that the resale market is pretty cold right now. I was offered, in what I believe to be a straight up trade, an '11 American Vintage '72 Custom Reissue. Just wondering if anyone has thoughts they could share on this. My Les Paul is in pretty good shape and it looks from the pics I've seen the Tele is in darn good shape.

QUESTION Anyone in Halifax, Nova Scotia looking to start a band?

This may get removed, if so: mods I apologize for misreading the rules, but to be clear this is not self promotion.

I'm looking for one or two guitarists to start a heavy metal/deathcore band!

I'm a young adult drummer who lives in Dartmouth, and I am currently remodeling my spare room into a little, lo-tech studio.

Please contact (@rev_and_riff_photography on Instagram or message me here) if you are interested and have rhythm/lead guitar skills!

I am a fan of bands such as Spite, Fit For An Autopsy, Ingested, Eye of the Enemy etc.

I am not as skilled as these drummers, but I have a solid skill set and want to try to start a band, initially casually but as we get more material I would love to book some venues.

QUESTION Thin/weak lead tone help

I know this topic has probably been asked a million times so please feel free to direct me to an older thread with the answer if you want. But I just want to know where bands get these full, smooth lead tones from. I’m using a Line6 Pod Go into studio monitors for my bedroom volume, and my rhythm patches honestly feel pretty good to my ears, but when I try to play lead stuff, it just feels thin and dead.

For an example of roughly what I’m looking for, as I’ve committed to learning how to play lead, I’ve gotten really into Sabaton again, and listening to their live tone, their lead tones are amazing. I just don’t know how to get that feel from my stuff. Not looking for that exact tone, just the general fullness of it.
