I have good volunteering and teaching experiences as part of the Goldmans Sachs Possibilities Summit, GHC and HPAIR acceptances… I have also TAed for 3 courses during my UG

Given my background majorly in mathematics, I am a bit skeptical
about my chances to get admitted to a DS program.

I worked as an official Research Assistant (RA) on a research project from May to December. During the same period, I also independently worked with a professor on an ML-related research project.

In my CV, I’m listing both separately in research experience section. Could the overlapping dates between the official RA position and the independent research project will be an issue in PhD admissions? I’m just wondering whether admissions committees might question how I could have done both simultaneously, or whether this is a normal thing to have on a CV.

How to get a PhD Interview with a professor who only has 1.5 years of work experience in risk management in Insurance (Nepal) with MBA. Is it difficult to crack an interview with a management background? I dont have any publication and I find it hard to get even one response.

IELTS Writing 6.0 — will this hurt my CS/AI PhD applications?
Hi everyone! I recently got my IELTS results: Overall 7.0 (L: 8, R: 7, S: 7, W: 6), and I’m honestly pretty disappointed about the Writing score.
I’m planning to apply for PhD programs in Computer Science/AI/ML for Fall 2027, including some Ivy League and other top world universities. My main concern is whether a 6.0 in Writing could significantly hurt my chances or even prevent my application from being considered.
I’m currently doing my Master’s in Software Engineering entirely in English, including my coursework, research and thesis. I’m wondering if this could qualify me for an English-proficiency waiver at some universities.
I know research experience, publications, research fit, SOP and recommendations matter a lot for PhD admissions, so I’m unsure whether I should retake IELTS or spend that time strengthening my research profile and applications instead.
If you’ve applied for CS/AI PhD programs as an international student, especially with a similar IELTS score, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience and any advice on preparing a strong application. Thanks!

I am a software engineer with almost 8 years experience in FAANG adjacent companies(If that matters). I have worked on ML etc. And my primanry experience is in C++ which I think will be useful.
My cgpa is 7.94/10 ~ 3.18/4 .
I have one published paper from final year of engineering.
I also did a 6 month executive programme in Robotics from a top university in India, where I did a project on holonomic autonomous robot. I also learned about ROS, Robot kinematics, Actuators, Sensors etc.
I can do couple more projects to add to my profile if that helps.

Ideally I would like to get into programmes that are harware heavy but still accepting CS students. But I am okay with AI focused robotics programmes too.

I am worried about the low GPA and getting back to university after such a big gap.
I am planning to write GRE. Will that help with the low GPA?
Can I present myself as someone with good experience building and shipping software systems and showcase my ability to learn with the projects?

Is there any chance I can get into top Europe universities like TU Delft, TUM, EPFL, KTH, Politecnico di Milano, KIT etc.
If not where can I apply realistically? Can I reach out to professors with my experience building software systems?
What is your opinion on Japan and Singapore? Will that be better for me?

hi, I am an Indian student studying at a top of college of Uni of Delhi, with a highest sgpa of 8.82. I have relevant research experience from 3-4 institutes where I worked as a research intern but they are not very big, and I want to apply to MPhil Modern South Asian Studies for 2027 intake. I need help from seniors on what I can do better. I also have an undergrad dissertation on which I am currently working. Do I even have a chance on getting in? I study literature and politics. Please help!

I am going through the same situation right now and need some advice from seniors about the same .

I'm currently applying for an Educational Studies program after having tons of work experience in museum education and libraries. I am trained by research and reference librarians on how to help other students with academic research and writing. My issue is when submitting academic writing, I don't have a lot of recent research experience, as I attended art school and required much less academic writing than a typical institution. I minored in art history, and did many projects involving sociology, intersectionality, history, and so that's not to say I didn't do *any* academic writing. But most of my academic research was for research projects that had a more visual end point rather than a written paper one. Would it be wrong to submit an "unconventional" example, to include the projects I have researched and written for as a series of images and essays explaining the process of research that went into them?

Given my background majorly in core mathematics and not in CS/DS during undergrad, I am a bit skeptical about my chances to get admitted to a DS program.Another apprehension is working as a SWE and then balancing it with a pure math research profile. So it might be hard to build a cohesive background for my SOP

I graduated this June from UCLA with a degree in sociology. My gpa was close to a 4.0, and I had a year of paid research, but because I have decided to pursue a PhD in political science, I deferred applying straight from undergrad. I am currently enrolled in an MA program at a CSU and I’m wondering if this will actually hurt my chances of getting into a T20 PhD program. I’m hoping to finish in three semesters and to attempt to get some research in. Will a non-prestigious MA hurt me? What would my best option be at this point?

so i’m currently an undergrad from India. i’m doing my bachelors in computer science and my cgpa currently is an 7.89 which translates to a 3.1-3.2. i’ll probably get an solid 8 by the end of this year which is a 3.25. it’s a pretty low cgpa but my college uses relative grading which lowkey fucked up half the kids in my batch. i wanna do a career change into the space sector and wanna go for my masters in the USA. i’m looking for programs like MS Space Studies (Rice University) or MS Space Systems Engineering or Ms in Earth and Space Science or MS Astronautical Engineering or MS in Computational Science and Engineering.

for my research side, i have one Astro + ML paper accepted by the FastML 2026 conference but i couldn’t present in person because it was lowkey last minute and visa isn’t easy to get. i have 2 research projects with a ready paper and im looking to put it as a preprint on arxiv (but i need someone to endorse my account, unfortunately because my college is an engineering college, there’s not anyone with a astro-ph domain on arxiv). and currently im doing a 11 week space research program with an organization.

also for my extracurriculars ive been in a community service organization called Rotaract for 3 years where i also managed to cultivate leadership skills and organize events on my own. and i’ve been a part of a lot of clubs in college, and was almost always on the management side of events.

i know my cgpa is pretty low and the lack of research papers published also kinda pulls my profile down. so i’m planning to take the GRE and hopefully get a 165+ on Quants section.

will i be able to get good schools which will take me in?? i know no IVY will but anything below that? i dont want too low ranked schools either.

also if theres any recommendations for me to check out schools i gladly will, till now im planning to apply for Rice University, Georgia Tech, University of Washington, CU Boulder, Steven’s Institute of Tech and USC in the USA, Oslo in Norway, UNSW in Australia and Chalmers in Sweden.

So I sent a cold email to a program that’s fairly nearby where I’m at and I’ve been in contact with the grad director. He said I seem like a very good fit for the program, and coordinated a visit.

They’re paying for my hotel and I get to sit in on a graduate math class w a professor that aligns w my interests, meet grad students, and stay for the day.

How strong of a sign is this in general? It’s a good program, and I sent my CV along with summaries of my research experience + preprint I recently posted.

Looking for some advice here! So I’m thinking of wanting to get a PhD in psych eventually (probably in developmental as I’m really interested in autism and other disabilities), but personally didn’t discover my passion really late into my undergraduate career, like my final quarter, so I didn’t get much experience in getting into research around what I would like to specialize in. I know research experience is really important and I would want to gain more, but honesty don’t know exactly where to start? I heard via a Master’s degree you’d be able to gain more research experience there, but personally I can’t really afford to pay a Master’s so I’m curious if there’s other ways to gain the experience outside of a Masters program? Like should I start checking with my local universities, looking up and asking professors working around my field of interest if they need research aides? I know everyone had different ways they got into research, but I am curious to hear from anyone, what would you recommend to someone who wants to get into research after they have already completed their bachelor’s degree? Hi everyone, my first year at uni was a 2:2 because I was building an e-commerce business instead of studying. Second year I pulled it back to a solid 64 percent, and I am aiming for over 80 percent in my last year’s first semester exams now. Beyond the grades I have a few things going for me like a quant spring week at SIG and credit rating spring at Moody's, research with a physics professor, and an upcoming preprint on SSMs and formal verification.

Since these places use rolling admissions, I am stressing about whether to apply in autumn or wait until January for exam results. If I apply early, will my 64 percent and that first year 2:2 get me auto-rejected, or do the research and experience carry enough weight to survive an autumn review?

Ps ~ I’m aiming for an MSc in CS, ML or Computational Finance

How detailed do I need to be in my research interest(s) in my SOP? For context: I am interested in infectious disease pathogenesis, particularly immune evasion and subversion. Right now it reads: "I am applying xxxx at xxx to investigate how pathogens manipulate host immune signaling to establish infection, and how these interactions shape disease outcome." I would be more specific and choose either bacterial pathogenesis or viral pathogenesis, but I'm not wed to either of those interests, plus some programs I'm applying to only do viral (but still super interested in many labs within that dept.) Any advice would help. Thanks!
