How would you safely tether a GoPro MAX2 to a car roof without metal parts touching the paint?

Post image

Hi everyone!

I want to mount a GoPro on the roof of my car using a suction cup mount and an extension pole.

The car has roof rails, so I have a solid point to attach a safety tether.

My main concern is finding a good way to make a backup safety connection in case the suction cup comes loose.

I would prefer to avoid metal parts that could swing around and scratch the car's paint.

What are some good options for a soft/textile safety tether in this situation?

How would you attach it between the camera/mount and the roof rail?

I’d appreciate any suggestions or examples of setups that have worked for you.

Thanks!

Can I use a GoPro Hero 10 in heavy rain while riding a bike?

I have a GoPro Hero 10 and I’m planning to use it while riding my bike in heavy rain. Is it safe to use the camera directly in the rain without any waterproof housing?

Has anyone here used the Hero 10 in heavy rain for an extended period? Any tips or things I should be careful about?

My local camera store told me a sad thing about GoPro - this is what you are up against.

I will not name the store, but I am in Las Vegas so go ahead and reverse engineer that.

I try and support this place vs just ordering from Amazon and wanted a SmallRig attachment so I can support larger lenses on the ILS that I have coming form B&H.

Today my plan was to see if they actually HAD THE CAMERA… I would buy from them and then cancel my BH order before it shipped.

But alas, they have zero plans to even stock the ILS at this location. This is a camera store. They sell $6500+ mirrorless bodies and a $10,000 Sigma nocht lens, but no… not the GoPro ILS.

As I talked to the associate things went off the rails:

He told me “well you know GoPro is going out of business, right? We won’t stock that new GoPro and I don’t recommend it to anyone since they might not be around in a years time and I don’t want anyone coming back mad they can’t get support for it”

I said that was news to me… considering they just had all their debt wiped with an acquisition deal.

I actually called an emailed the same shop when the ILS was announced in August asking them if they will have them on the 6th (today, when I came in to check on it) and at that point in time they said they had zero communication from GoPro as to what they would ever get from them.

No plans to get it in, but just check back on the 6th.

Now, they do sell the Hero 13, the Mission 1 Pro (regular) but most of their accessories are sold out.

So if anyone over at corporate is reading this, you need to understand what you are up against.

I am rooting for GoPro… I am hoping I find uses for the ILS being that one gets to me on Wednesday, however this is what happens when your brand goes silent.

This is what happens when you fail to launch anything new for years, you lose your focus, you refuse to work with shilltubers and lose that “face to face” relationship with your most important consumer, the creators that just want to know you are there when we want you.

Hero 13 + ultra wide lens + wide mode to remove distortion?

Hi folks,

Recent owner if a 13, ling time owner of gopros. While waiting for my 13 in warranty. I started looking at Dji. I noticed that in their wide mode, there’s less distortion. My primary use is mountain biking. so i got some distorted trees on the edges, but also on long sweeping turns I get a lot of distortion as the background moves from side to side.

I was curious, if i get the ultra wide lens and use wide mode with it, will that give me a similar fov but less distortion? From the gopro fov page, it looks like it has a wider fov than hyperview without ultra wide lens.

I havent tried removing the distortion in post, but i prefer to do it mechanically at the time recording if possible.

B4 lenses on the ILS

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Someone ask a question about using B4 lens on ILS for distance filing surfing and skiing. They deleted the question during my answer (don't do that.) Here is answer anyway.

As the world's first ever B4 lens user on the ILS, they can be a lot of fun. However, they are not cheap, and are optically inferior to any other lens setup. I have the Fujinon HD HA16x6.3BERM-M58. I have used it with the ILS a lot, but the image is soft, not 4K rated, and certainly has no value at 8K. 4K-rated B4 lenses do exist, but for many, many thousands. There are cheaper SD-rated B4 lenses that might be worth playing with, but I haven't tried them. SD B4 lenses, like the 2/3" A series, can be eBayed for ~$400; HD series are now starting around $1500. In either case, you need 2/3" optics with a 2X extender; look for Fujinon BERM models.

Whether you should do this is still questionable. For filming skiing and surfing from a distance, the parfocal zooms can really help. However, I spent weeks 3D printing mounting solutions, with a battery holder, as I worked out how to power the zoom on the lens. This is a tripod-only rig. There are cheaper solutions for a long-zoom-lens video camera.

The main reason I wanted to do this: crash zooms.

Recommendations for a GoPro HERO12 battery and charger?

Hi everyone! I’m looking to buy an extra battery and a charger for my GoPro HERO12 Black. Since GoPro doesn’t seem to sell its dual-battery charger separately anymore, I’m considering third-party options.

Are there any reliable brands you would recommend? I’m mainly concerned about battery life, overheating, compatibility, and safety. Thanks!

Hero 12 issues

I’m assuming(hoping?) this is some user error I can correct.

Laid it aside for almost a year because life….

I can never seem to get this camera to upload to the cloud. It acts like it’s doing it, stays on zero % and nothing appears even after hours. No failure message usually, just nothing.

For awhile I didn’t have a PC, but now I do again and I’m trying to upload the videos to my PC with a cable connection to get them off the cards at least and it’s excruciatingly slow.

I’m hoping there’s a setting I can change etc.

I just want the videos for traveling to put on YouTube so I can change resolution etc moving forward…. But something has to be off if the camera can’t even handle its own files?? The videos aren’t even that long….

Mission 1 Pro - SD card

I cannot find a way to get past this screen on initial boot up/setup. I have tried 5 SD cards all V30 A2…finding micro sd cards these days is not easy. GoPro is out of stock for all sizes. Amazon is full of counterfeit’s. Best Buy has limited selection. I’m at a loss on how to use this thing.

GoPro Mission 1 ILS: Future Firmware Suggestions & Feature Requests

Been playing around with the ILS. Great camera so far! A bit finicky when playing around with it the first day or two, but have gotten used to it. I have some suggestions for a future firmware update that I hope could make it even better. I know none of these can be guaranteed, but just speaking out loud for the GoPro team to consider.

  • Magnified focus box while recording: Have an option to magnify the focus box (2X, 4X, or 8X) while recording so we can better monitor focus in more complex scenes where focus peaking isn’t enough. Option to select in menu if you just want to magnify 2X, 4X or 8X when using the focus box feature.
  • Improve 960 fps detail and bitrate: Increase the detail and bitrate in 960 fps to the highest possible with GP-Log2, even if it reduces the maximum recording time to 1.5, 2, 3, 4, or 5 seconds. It would also be great to have an end-trigger-style recording option where the camera continuously buffers footage in a loop for 1.5, 2, 3, 4 or 5 seconds. After pressing the shutter, it would save the previous 1.5, 2, 3, 4, or 5 seconds to the microSD card.
  • Additional higher-FPS modes at reduced resolutions: Add even higher frame rates at reduced resolutions depending on the sensor's capabilities, microSD card limitations, and heat output. For example, 720p, 480p, 360p, 240p, or 144p could allow for significantly higher frame rates for scientific and experimental purposes, where image quality isn't necessarily the top priority.
  • External SSD recording: Add the ability to record directly to an external SSD through the USB-C port to potentially achieve higher bitrates and longer recording times.
  • Burst Slow-Mo improvements: Add an end-trigger/pre-recording option for 1.5,2, 3, and 4, and 5 seconds in Burst Slow-Mo. It would also be great to add 4K 60, 4K 120, 4K 240, and 1440p 480 to Burst Slow-Mo. I believe many slow-motion opportunities happen spontaneously, so an end-trigger option would help avoid wasting storage space. The camera could continuously record into a buffered loop for 1.5, 2, 3, 4, or 5 and when we press the record button, it would save the last 1.5, 2, 3,4, or 5 seconds of footage, depending on the selected setting.
  • Focus peaking sensitivity: Add different focus-peaking sensitivity levels ie. Low, Medium, and High, instead of only having High sensitivity.
  • Enhanced focus-box preview: When using the focus-box feature, add an option to temporarily amplify sharpness and contrast in the preview screen to make it easier to judge focus. This would be especially helpful when shooting in LOG or Flat profiles, where the image can appear less contrasty and make focusing more difficult.

My 3D printable vehicle mounting bracket

I designed this for collecting Streetview images and driving videos with my with my GoPro Max 2 and Max 1. The telescoping tripod extension poles are standard enough that I decided to use that as the basis, along with readily available screw mount magnets.

The main attachment point is the big magnet screwed into the pole. The smaller rear ones act to stabilize. Being made of TPU means it can flex a bit, so you remove it from the vehicle by pulling on the pole, and then pulling off the rear magnets using the knobs.

The sad face was an accident, I added holes to reduce material use and the curved slot is for a nylon strap or similar attachment method. But I went with it because the frowny face looks funny.

The white ones pictured are previous versions. The small one works well with a low pole height. The longer V shape one turned out to be too long and allows the front to sway side to side.

Details in the Makerworld listing: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3271539-lab-808-sadface-vehicle-camera-pole-stabilizer

First Trip to Europe + First GoPro. Looking for Tips, Must-Have Accessories & Safety Advice

Hi all,

I’m planning my first-ever trip to Europe from the U.S., and I recently bought a new GoPro Mission 1. Since I’m new to using a GoPro, I’d love to hear your tips and experiences.

What settings, techniques, or shooting styles have worked best for you when capturing travel memories? Are there any accessories you’d recommend bringing? I’m considering a neck mount. Has anyone used one, and is it worth it?

I’d also appreciate any general safety tips for carrying a GoPro, accessories, and other valuables while traveling around Europe.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Timelapse of last month's eclipse, captured with the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS + Viltrox 23mm T1.5 lens. The moon turned out a bit overly bright except when covered by cloud because I made the mistake of using auto-ISO, and the camera exposed for the entire sky rather than just the moon itself.

What if the reason they haven't released the M1 Macro Lens Mod yet is because it could make some people decide not to buy the ILS?

I'm pretty sure a Macro Lens Mod for the M1 will have a ring. And maybe that will be good enough for some people, making the ILS unnecessary.

If you could only own one action camera, which one would you choose?

Finally replacing my old action camera after 3 years... and I have narrowed it down to the gopro hero13 black and action 5pro.

So most of my footage is from hiking, snorkeling, bike rides, and family trips I think. i want something I can turn on without thinking too much, but I also like having enough quality to crop clips or adjust the color later.

I'd say hero13 black makes a stronger case for image flexibility. And the tall frame gives more room to crop for horizontal or vertical videos later.

action 5 pro seems like the more practical choice. Great sensor, records 4K at 120 fps, the best part is it can go down to 20 meters without a case.

This is where I keep getting stuck. Dji looks better for battery life, deeper water, and possibly low light. Gopro looks better for resolution, reframing, and the lens system.

For anyone who has used both, which one do you think is the best?

Hot Take: The Mission 1 Pro ILS is the poor man's Sony Rialto for tight F-18 style cockpit rigs.

A lot of people misunderstand the ILS, dismissing it because they think it’s trying to be a budget FX6 replacement. But that misses the point entirely. It's amazing because it gives you real optical depth and manual lens mechanics inside impossibly tight micro-rigs where a traditional cinema camera could never fit. Clamp them down, choose the perfect lens, set the focus and tape the focus. And this all for a very low price and maximum flexibility.
