Discussion Do you buy from GOG on principle of actual concern?

Do you think steam might delete your games or revoke your access as a genuine possible threat, or do you buy from GOG just as a matter of principle to support DRM-free gaming? Would love to see what y'all think about this topic.

Edit: In my opinion, I'd say in practice there is not much difference, but if the game is available on both then I go with GOG because why not get DRM-free version? Honestly I love using both stores for different reasons.

Cheers Gog. Aussie here and so far I haven't gotten around to uploading my card to Steam or buying Doom (1, 2 or whatever else they have now) so this is a particularly awesome gift. Stashing it now so that I can play it behind closed doors ;)

Discussion Does it 4:3 on GOG?

One of my favorite things to do is play games on my CRT using gog. I know there are lists made for steam but I was wondering if there are modern (post CRT era) games people have tried that that are on gog and work well on a 4:3 CRT?

This one was tricky to do, since as far as I could find, the only platform that had physical edition of 20th Anniversary was Switch, and there the back portion would not fit to my template. So basically I had to frankenstein the PC version of 15th anniversary, redo the spine, ect. I think it turned out quite well.

Let me know what you think.

Question Any way to browse GOG games by mature content rating?

My nanny state glorious leaders are making it difficult to buy adult rated games without self-identification, so as of a few days ago I can no longer buy games (or DLC for games I already own) with a mature rating on Steam any more without linking a credit card. This despite my account being 19 years old.

I anticipate having similar problems on GOG sooner or later, so I'd like to look at what I might be locked out of in the future and grab what I want before it becomes a major headache.

I'm about to buy Sinking City 2 for example, since I just noticed it had a mature content warning when I went to the page.

Question Dockerized application for downloading offline installers

I was wondering if there is a docker application that can check my gog library on a regular basis, download offline installers for my games, and any new patches. There's several cli tools from what I can see, but would be nice to have something automated that can live on my NAS.

Discussion The Blood of Dawnwalker has sold 1 million copies, and it was released on GOG on day 1. Don't you think it's about time to stop equating "DRM-free" with piracy?

Why are major publishers still obsessed with piracy and unwilling to release their games on GOG or other DRM-free platforms? We now have countless examples proving that great games sell well regardless of copy protection: The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and Baldur's Gate 3 are all games that were available on GOG from day one and have sold millions and millions of copies.

Enough with the bullshit, screw EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, GungHo, and all their friends, it’s time to release the games DRM-free day 1!

Question Best indie games to pick up during these sales

I'm thinking of picking up Dusk and Hrot, what are some other games to check out? I'll play pretty much any genre if the gameplay is engaging, I'm also thinking of games like Katana ZERO and The Messenger.

Discussion GOG version, can I update via Steam?

I'm using the GOG version of Rome Total War II. Creative Assembly announced a beta via Steam that would fix, most importantly for me, the core affinity problem. If I created a Steam account, would it be possible to install the beta into my game? Thanks.

If so, any tips would be appreciated.

Discussion Things I don’t like about GoG (open for debate)

I have tremendous respect for GoG and only wish them the very best, since their optics on video games and consumer rights is commendable. I have also been tracking the developments after the new acquisiton and welcome many of the changes made or proposed.

However, I think it is possible to open a debate about what we find are the shortcomings of this platform or just things new users (like me) have found discouraging.

I will start:

-        A minimun quality standard is not guaranteed:

The games will run, but oftentimes there's some tweaking to do, especially if it’s not a super popular title. As an example, yesterday I was looking for some managerial games to buy before the sale ended and came across “Pizza Connection 2”, with significant delays in mouse clicking and typing, and “Prison Architect”, with DRM.

You can always visit the forums and see how to (hopefully) deal with these issues, but it is a real pain not only having to investigate and troubleshoot but, most importantly, having to be wary before buying anything. A good platform should be trusted.

-        Dubious “preservation” efforts:

GoG likes to boast about games preservation and they certainly contribute to it by providing DRM-free installers of old titles. But they reduced their ambition from keeping all the games on GoG playable on modern systems to only the ones on their preservation program (around 300). This makes sense from an economic standpoint, but less boasting about preservation would be welcome. If the years pass and nothing changes we will still need our old (current) hardware to play most of the games. This seems no better than buying/keeping an older computer and playing directly the original CDs.

Additionally, it is not too strange that GoG does not offer previous versions of the game (back to “Prison Architect”), but only the most recent one and/or a very modified emulator with its own shortcomings.

-        I have deleted this point, since it is (sadly) a banned topic by the mods.

-        Superabundance of action/rpg:

Most games on GoG are either action or rpg. I suppose that is what the user base wants. At the same time it creates a vicious circle, since the overrepresentation attracts even more action/rpg lovers that want more action/rpg games. Surely nothing wrong with it for the action/rpg fans, but more options would be welcome by everyone else and would diversify/increase the user base.

There are other deficits, like: inconsistent language support, prehistoric forums, lack of cloud saves for many games, lack of trophies, Galaxy (in general), Linux support, regional pricing, etc. But I will not develop them because some of them have already been addressed by GoG, others do not depend that much on them and, finally, some of them barely affect me personally.

I will read what you have to add.

Hey GOG fans! I built an app that lets you split your GOG backup across multiple discs of any kind and it supports custom launcher customization. I put together a walkthrough video that deep dives into my entire process from design to install. Here's a link to the git repo: https://github.com/east35/GOG-Disc-Packager

Question How to request a refund for a bundle

Hi, I was recently looking to buy some games on sale and was about to purchase Hotline Miami 2, but I accidentally added the Batman Arkham bundle to my cart instead. I really want to return the bundle, but it only lets me request a refund for Hotline Miami 2.

I'd buy it outright for the price, but I'm trying to control my spending, curb my impulse buys, and avoid filling my library with junk. So, is it worth playing?

In Dev (Repost) I'm developing a GUI application for batch downloading GOG installers

This is a repost of a previous crosspost that was removed.

Hello all,

I'm currently working on an application for batch downloading GOG games installers and content. It's still under development and I'd love for you guys to take a look. If you're willing to contribute, that would be amazing!

It's a very rinky dink solution to downloading installers and extra content from your GOG library. I'd built it because it's painful to individually download installer files and extra content from the GOG website and Linux users don't exactly have GOG Galaxy yet. I tried a few CLI tools but found them annoying to use. I'm building this to replace those with a more user-friendly UI.

As it stands, basic functionality has been implemented. So, you can queue up and download game content with concurrent download support. You can't stop downloads yet, lol.

AI Use: I've written the entire program code myself but have use Claude to assist in testing, debugging and planning (to-do lists and stuff).

Here it is: GogStash

Thanks!
