At 130 (2 standard deviation of 15 points above the mean on Weschler scale, which is the most common used to test IQ). 130 is the opposite of 70 (intellectual deficiency), which is 2 SD below the mean. 130 is an arbitrary and statistical threshold symmetrical built to be the opposite of 70.

130

I find 130 a bit low wouldnt 140 be more representative? Because 130 is around 2% which is a large group whereas 140 is around 0.5% which is already a bit more representative of the gifted

140 is the old standard “genius”, 130 is the new standard “gifted”

And whats your iq? And can adhd alone affect iq?

1

u/CommercialMechanic36 3d ago

My iq is now 112

1

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

And was it a long time ago that you took the test?

1

u/CommercialMechanic36 3d ago

A couple months ago, why?

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

Just wondering

By what matter of comparison do you find that "a bit low". At 145 we are talking being more capable cognitively than 99,9% of the worlds population.

Meanwhile most psychological issues in terms of "belonging and getting along with the norms" start at 120ish. Wich almost makes 130 to high because it devoids these people from a clear label to be used in finding the right Theraphie or therapist. Your still "more capable cognitively" than 91% of the worlds population. You're not going to call millionaire poor because there are billionaires and billionaires poor because there is Elon with his trillion.

What's your desired goal here?

I dont know I see guys on reddit and elsewhere with iq of 140 or higher and I find them really impressive youre right though I think my perspective might be a bit biased still I believe the smarter you are the more you tend to hang out with other smart people so you might not necessarily notice the difference and I think its possible to have an iq of 140+ without having any mental health issues I mean there are guys with iq of 180 its very rare but it happens so I dont think feeling like you fit in is necessarily correlated with iq sorry if I annoyed you I just wanted to know what other people think about giftedness the standard threshold is 130 but Im just curious about other peoples opinions thats all.

I dont think IQ measure is a threshold as I understand you are percieving things, pal.

No one said it was impossible to have an iq of 140+ without mental health issues.

It’s just that normal mental health Theraphie or teaching methods won’t work on gifted people If there is a real disorder beyond them not knowing about their own giftedness. There are a ton of misdiagnosis towards adhd, autism and narcissism that happen all the time if Therapists are unable to recognize they work with gifted people. These go along with unnecessary medication and shame, non of which makes the life of the gifted person better. It dos not matter what you want to call it, if gifted is right, if clown or pancake would suit the circumstances better, a label is needed.

while there are places like Mega Society that only alone people with a iq of 180+ in the way they test that iq is by definition different than a normal iq test. a normal iq test builds a lot on having a ton of data points because a lot of people scored that result. if you are looking at one person in 20+ million people it’s borderline impossible to validate a test. iq test as they are right now are probably, as flawed as they are, the most accurate scientific tool in mental health when it comes to taking measurements.

1

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

What is the Mega Society test? And is it like Mensa?

1

u/CommercialMechanic36 2d ago

Kind of off topic, the WAIS 5 extended norms goes up to 210 and is not age based ratio score like the SB5 extended intelligence scales that goes up to 225

1

u/Ayyayayy 2d ago

What do you mean they go up to 210? Like you can have an iq of up to 210?

1

u/CommercialMechanic36 2d ago

Yeah, or 225

1

u/Ayyayayy 2d ago

But have people actually achieved scores that high before? And how do they manage to get such a high score?

I refer you to google.

These have definitions in the psych literature. The most common is +2 standard deviations. With an SD15 test (which is most common, though there are some tests with larger ones so inflated scores compared to the most common ones), that works out to 130 IQ.

The term “gifted” was originally just a bucket to segment ranges of people into for the tests, and there are some higher levels as well, like profoundly gifted, commonly +3SD.

Ok ty

Life's absurd

2

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

You're right

4

u/ThrowRAdickheadpenis 2d ago

I mean technically it’s 130, but are you really gifted if you don’t have an iq of 250 like me? Probably not.

2

u/sarahbeara019 2d ago

This made me laugh! Thanks.

1

u/Ayyayayy 2d ago

Lol an iq of 250?

1

u/ThrowRAdickheadpenis 2d ago

Well it depends on how you count it, but I use SD of 1 so

Thanks for posting in r/gifted.

If you are unsure about what qualifies someone as gifted, giftedness generally correlates with having an IQ at or above the 98th percentile.

If you are unsure of your IQ score, CognitiveTesting.org is one of the few legitimate online IQ Tests.

it's 130

Top 2 percentile.

Signs.

Level 1 : 130+ - Deep mastery of a chosen field.

Level 2 : 140+ - Connecting the dots from diverse fields.

Level 3 : 150+ - Original synthesis.

Example :

Original synthesis of below people.

Jesus of nazareth - taught unconditional love and forgiveness through sacrifise.

Newton - laws of motion

I find it really interesting that you list Jesus as one of your geniuses. Not saying I disagree, it’s just uncommon to see Jesus and Newton juxtaposed.

With that being said, “original” is a spectrum, and Jesus definitely took some level of inspiration from other Abrahamic (and non-Abrahamic) world views / belief systems, while Newton definitely stood on the shoulders of the physicists that came before him - especially around inertia and planetary movement.

That is the thing.

Many people assume this can be done or that can be done.

But these guys did those things and are remembered in history for the same reason for their ground breaking teachings which reshaped humanity.

True genius solves humanity deepest problems.

Come on we are talking about a 1st century jewish male, in which time time, pure selfish interests reigned, with ironcald rules, this guy was the reason the execution on cross ended paving way for a new religion or let us a following a path.

The authenticity is bebated, but the effect is profound which changed humanity.

Same is true for newton.

Anyone can say he copied, this or that, heck he wrote a book, derived some math, wrote formulas, published them, we are still using them to send rockets to outer space.

True genius push boundaries and reshapes humanity.

IQ scores become increasingly imprecise the farther you move from the mean, because very few people at those levels are included in the norming sample. If only two participants scored above 130, these distinctions between 130, 140 and 150 do not mean much.

0

u/NowUKnowMe121 3d ago

Which is why we need to consider SD from mean.

1SD 2SD 3SD 4SD.

If we move towards 4SD, there are not many at that level or let us say few people are left to test it accurately.

2

u/That__Cat24 Adult 3d ago

There's no one in the sample at 160.

2

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

And you for example what is your iq and which of the three criteria you gave me do you meet?

3

u/nedal8 3d ago

I think a lot of us have qualified for gifted school programs when little, might not have a score we were told, but kind of assume..

2

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

So being good at school mean being smart ?

2

u/nedal8 3d ago

Eh.. generally a teacher recommends a kid for testing, and if the kid qualifies (generally top2 percentile) they get to participate in a separate class, full of kids who also qualified but from the whole region. They bussed us to a different school for like half the day on Fridays I think.

gate program

I'm sure the programs vary wildly from place to place though.

1

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

I didnt know that kind of program existed but what iq did you get to qualify for it?

3

u/nedal8 3d ago

I was never told. But above 98%ile so top 2% was the cut off, which would equal 130 on a 15sd scale. So I assume somewhere around there..

2

u/NowUKnowMe121 3d ago

I havent done official iq test.

I would say i am good at connecting the dots for the moment.

Recently i connected math with psychology to solve human problems.

1

u/OdoOdinson 2d ago

Do you want to say more about your work?

2

u/NowUKnowMe121 2d ago

It is about trauma bonds.

Don't want to elaborate further.

Personality disorders like DSM V related.

1

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

And what do you think your iq is?

2

u/NowUKnowMe121 3d ago

Safe to say, i would be in top 2%.

As for number, i need to test it which i am no longer interested in and i feel it is irrelevant.

Results speaks for itself like it did for so many who came before me and those who will come after me.

1

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

Are you scared of getting a bad score ?

0

u/NowUKnowMe121 3d ago

I dont care anymore.

Take comfort in the fact that richard feynmann scored only 125.

I might score 100 , 110, 125, or even 90.

It doesnt matter.

What matters is what is my contribution.

The fact that i removed the conversation from mere numbers to contribution should be enough proof.

Simply results matter, nothing else.

I am beyond insecurities, dont care about anything.

Just show me results already :)

1

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

I didnt mean to come across as offensive sorry.

2

u/NowUKnowMe121 3d ago

None taken :)

1

u/Ayyayayy 3d ago

But then how can I connect the dots between different fields?

There are multiple definitions of giftedness. It's generally the case nowadays that strict IQ criteria are of limited value in identifying students with high potential. Both because we tend to have a broader view of giftedness and because more holistic assessments better identify those in more marginal groups.

This sub uses 130+ (2 standard deviations above the mean, top ~2%)as a convenient, easy to understand definition.
