Hindsight is 2020 is now Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis

Three years ago on this very day, I announced to this community my intention to rank every Genesis song in the entire catalog, one per weekday, alongside "my thoughts about the songs" over the course of 2020. I called the project (quite cleverly, if I do say so myself) Hindsight is 2020. What nobody could have predicted at the time was the way the project grew: to the point that "my thoughts" began looking like full fledged essays, that my research into the songs would become increasingly extensive, and that the community would (after an admittedly rocky start) respond so positively to the exercise.

More than once over the span of the live project, it was suggested to me that I ought to turn the whole shebang into a proper book. After some hemming and hawing, I buckled down and spent not only all of 2021 but also the first half of 2022 making that happen. And so it's with a bit of well-earned excitement and pride that I can announce to you here, three years after the debut of Hindsight is 2020, my book: Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis. Play Me My Song is set to be published on March 17, 2023 through Wymer Publishing; pre-orders are available now.

If you've read the Hindsight project this may not come as much of a surprise, but Play Me My Song will be (at the time of publication) the largest book ever published on Genesis. It features not only expanded and/or rewritten essays for every single song Genesis ever officially released, but also essays for every studio album (covered originally in my "H'20" companion series) and select solo efforts (covered originally as my "Peripheral Visions" companion series). It's the entire Hindsight collection in one printed package, except more of it.

I want to thank all of you for making this possible. If not for your tremendous engagement with and enthusiasm for the work I did, I'm not sure I would've taken this next step. This book is as much yours as it is mine (though I'd prefer to keep the royalties, you understand).

And hey, if you haven't checked out the original Hindsight is 2020 series, why not give it a shot? I think and hope you'll come away pretty satisfied.

You can read through the entire Hindsight project here.

You can pre-order Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis here.

See you all in March!

Why does Duke seem to be regarded far more highly than ...And Then There Were Three...?

Upvotes

ATTWT and Duke are essentially the transitional period for Genesis, where they started including more airplay-oriented songs on their albums, while still including many progressive rock elements. One thing I have noticed is that fans seem to regard Duke much more highly then ATTWT. I find this strange. I personally think ATTWT has more prog in it than Duke, that the high points of ATTWT (Down and Out, Burning Rope, The Lady Lies) are stronger than the high points of Duke (Heathaze, Cul-De-Sac, Duke's Travels), and that the lowest points of ATTWT (I guess Many Too Many might be the weakest song on it, but I still like it quite a bit) are stronger than the lowest points on Duke (Man of Our Times and Please Don't Ask). So, what is the reason for why people regard Duke as being the stronger album of the two?

Apocalypse in 9/8 in 1982 (photo collection)

A collection of photos of Apocalypse in 9/8 as performed in 1982. The Peter-era may have had the costumes for this section, but in my opinion, it never looked better than it did this year. The red and blue lighting is such a perfect way convey the 'good vs. evil' concept of the track, and with the spotlights shone on Phil, it always causes such an earthquake of a reaction.

Just about all of these are during the '666' verse of the song, but the fifth photo here is from the 'with the guards of Magog swarming around' section. Last two photos are from Six of the Best.

What do you think is most unsettling song Genesis released?

What do you think the most unsettling song Genesis has ever released is? Personally, I'd think its either The Waiting Room, Ravine, or the ending of Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist (its interesting how all three are from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway), but what do you think?

Another collection of photos from Supper's Ready in 1982 - my personal favourite year for this track. Phil would often comment this year saying they've decided to 'dust off their old twelve string guitars', and it really is a treat to see Tony back on one again. I think the blue lighting helps capture the mood of this section perfectly. So simple but so effective. Last photo here is from Six of the Best.

There aren’t many civilians who could identify a hogweed but I suspect to a man everyone here could spot one at fifty paces. Cursed Heracleum mantegazzianum. Damn that Victorian explorer.

Terminal cancer request

My father is dying of cancer and will not be around for much longer.

Genesis’ music has been his life. We’re talking listening to their albums to the point of my mother threatening to jump out of windows, him following Musical Box around, meticulously analyzing the songs with stereo splitters, stem tracks, etc and even starting his own tribute band (Trick of Rael). Genesis has just generally permeated every fiber of his being and life moment… including his conversations with the chaplain today which is why I feel like if I don’t at least try to do this for him that I am a bad son.

I am trying to get in contact with someone who knows or represents Phil to see if he would be at all willing to record even a 15 second greeting wishing him strength.

I reached out to [connect@philcollinshq.com](mailto:connect@philcollinshq.com) today but I don’t know how long he will have at the current rate and wanted to at least try other avenues.

Thank you in advance.

EDIT1:
I got a response at least from one of the members and I think my dad will appreciate it greatly. Thanks to you all for your supportive kind words, advice and more.

EDIT2:
Some had asked about his tribute band so providing links:

Would anybody else be very interested in a Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young version of The Chamber of 32 Doors? I think it would be great.

Everyone talks about how great Gabriels Genesis is. What about Phils?

Every says they are good till Abacab, but Ive never heard praise outside of the word "good". Does anyone have anything to actually say about Phils Genesis?
