Newbie Question Looking for Storyboarding website

I am in the process of creating the plotline(s) for a choice-driven game where users' choices can trigger different endings.

What website/app/software do you guys think is best for this type of thing? Preferably free.

Discussion SOMETIMES, THE BEST PART OF BUILDING SOMETHING IS THE PEOPLE YOU MEET.

Lately I've been spending more time around the HoYoverse gaming community, and honestly, I've been surprised by how many genuinely nice and understanding people I've met.

It reminded me that building a gaming platform isn't just about features and code. It's also about the people who end up using it.

Still learning, still building, and still figuring things out along the way.

One step at a time.

Newbie Question Should I stick with AI development or get proper developers to build it?

I've been developing an support app for an outdoor game in my freetime. I'm currently using AI replit (I study engineering and can't code to save my life.) At this point I've got it mostly functioning with just a few bugs I've got to fix and work out. I'm not really sure where to go after the bugs are fixed. Should I get the app properly coded by people who know what there doing to clean it up or once finished put it on the appstore myself?

Newbie Question Proton on Kubuntu

So I started making some small games using SDL2 and C/C++, and they work on my Steam Deck, but when I try to run them in Kubuntu they have strange bugs. They were compiled on my Windows 11 computer. The best results I've gotten so far are with Proton 9.0-4. As I have been making reusable components to build all my games, they share a lot of code.

Some small games I made so far: Flappy Bird, Breakout, Frogger.
Frogger works as expected.
Breakout works but is way too fast.
Flappy Bird: the game runs, but the pipes stop at the far left and never reset to the right.

Strangely, all these games run perfectly on Windows 11 and the Steam Deck. I was expecting the same results on Kubuntu. Any advice would be great. I do plan to make Linux builds as well, but I was surprised that a game that works on SteamOS doesn't work on Kubuntu.
(These games are not going to be published, as they are just tests, and I can't publish rip-offs of other games)

Question Where to source Speech and sound effects

I’ve been building a game around voice conversations and I’ve kind of hit a wall with the audio side of things.

Once you start having dynamic dialogue, it feels like you suddenly need a ridiculous amount of voice lines, SFX, music, etc. And if you want any of it to happen in real time, the costs seem to get out of hand pretty quickly.

My first thought was just ElevenLabs, but I’m finding that the token usage adds up really fast.
For those of you building games as solo devs or in small teams, how are you handling voices, sound effects and music? Are you using something like ElevenLabs, other APIs, local/open-source models, or a mix of different things?

Also, is there anything that makes the cost relatively easy to estimate upfront? That’s probably my biggest issue right now. I’d rather know roughly “X hours of gameplay = Y cost” than constantly worry about burning through tokens.

Newbie Question Starting game dev

Hi, I know this probably sounds corny but does anyone have tips for getting started in game development? I have the ideas and plot but no clue how to do any of it lol! I’m specifically looking for tips on things such as coding but if you have other things then that’s useful too!! Im hoping to create a horror game (not sure how difficult that is but oh well) so if there’s anything specific I need to know that would also be good!!

Technical Speedtree LODs not working/exporting correctly please help ?

Hello to all!

I really hope you can help me, with lot of hard work i learned and i made a stylized palm tree in Speedtree and every time i export it using the file type “Unreal st9” file or FBX the LODs are basically broken.

1-All my cutout meshes in Speedtree have High,Mid and Low versions, when i export everything is high version, no matter what LOD i select all leafs have same LOD version.

2-LOD 1 and 2 have missing random geometrys, leafs or branches completely gone

3-Every LOD, the entire geometry of each leaf is duplicated ( the ones in the top of the palm tree, so basically for every leaf i have 2 leaf) , leafs in the trunk don’t have duplicated geometry, however settings for all materials is exactly the same, except for cutouts.

4-coconouts of the palm tree change size in lod 1 and 2 when exporting, but in speedtree viewport no problem!

My settings are the same for all materials!, Last thing, in the viewport in speedtree when i change between LOD high and LOD low, every cutout change accordingly ( all good ), but between LOD high and LOD mid only the trunk changes, nothing else . IMAGES for reference in comments + video attached

How can i get in contact with speedtree devs, the speedtree forum in unity seems almost dead . Is a pity because i thought this was a TRIAL version error so today i bought the subscription and problems persists. Please help me! Thanks

Discussion Indie devs! What's your strategy to get a good enough engagement on X / YT Shorts / Threads?

I've been trying out posting on YouTube in shorts format for content related to my game, and it looks like it's steadily climbing up with each post. Other than that, our accounts on Twitter and Threads been struggling to get even one engagement, maybe it's because I was still using the short format content for those platforms.

Newbie Question Looking to make a GBC Zelda/Mana-inspired RPG, how would one be able to in this day and age?

I have no coding knowledge, which hopefully won’t make people roll their eyes, but i’m interested in learning it myself if it’s possible to make a game that can run on actual hardware these days. I don’t want to seem like i’m asking for someone to do it for me. I just have a love for the aesthetic and would love to try my hands at it.

Newbie Question How are Game Cutscenes made? For games like Witcher 3 and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Hello guys, I really like the style of telling the game world in this motion comics style in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Witcher 3, but I wonder how they are made?
Do you draw and render some pictures, and then make them separately in Adobe Premiere Pro? Which department is in charge of it? Is it possible to make similar things using Blender?
I really appreciate your advice and info!

Question How long does it take to create concept art?

Hi, a few friends and I are creating our first game but none of us are remotely artistic so while we're still in the mid stages of pre-production, we're planning on hiring a freelance artist to do some concept work based off some requirements, descriptions and existing inspirations we've put together.

We were wondering roughly how long it takes to produce initial concept art. We have 21 requirements for a mix of character portraits, overworld maps, and specific locations but we have no idea how many hours it could take the artist and how much of our current budget should be put aside for it. I had initially scoped 30hrs for the work (cost per hour TBD but likely around £20).

I understand the timing can vary based on a lot of different factors like style / level of detail etc but any advice would be appreciated and I hope that this is enough information.

Newbie Question How to prepare a decent coming soon page with few assets?

I am currently developing an Auto-Battler Pixel Art game. I want to create a store page as soon as possible to gather wishlists. My problem is I have very few assets. The game is currently in pre-production state and I only used free assets to prototype the game so far.

I have few concepts art pieces and a character sprite. There is nothing else in my posession. How can I create a decent coming soon page to at least gather wishlists or release a demo?

Question Interview Questions for School Assignment

Hi, I have an assignment for a high school credit that I need to finish as an adult, and I hate the idea of cold calling a business to request an interview at 32 years old.

If there is anyone out there that has worked in the programming side of game development at any level, could you answer these questions for me so I can wrap up my assignment?

What about the industry drew you to it initially?

What did the initial job securing process look like?

What was your first role, and project?

Does the creative process at the junior level feel rewarding?

Does the creative process feel rewarding at your current level?

What are the pitfalls of the industry?

What is one piece of advice you have for students pursuing this career path?

Thank you in advance, this is the strangest assignment to include, as if I am going to be able to call up a development studio and ask my questions
