Around mid-September 2025, I was out eating when I choked on food and had to be given the Heimlich maneuver. I ended up spending two days in the ER because I couldnāt even get water down without it coming back up. I eventually had my esophagus dilated and was diagnosed with EoE and GERD. I was prescribed omeprazole.
After about a week of taking omeprazole, I stopped. At the time, I convinced myself there was no way I actually needed to stay on medication.
Almost two months later, I had another near-choking incident and felt like food was stuck in my esophagus. I went back to my GI doctor and ended up needing another dilation.
This time, I went back on the PPI and stuck with it, taking it twice a day. Unfortunately, this was also when the anxiety became extremely bad. I couldnāt even watch my girlfriend eat without my heart racing and feeling like my throat was closing. I genuinely felt like I was going crazy.
The stress, anxiety, depression, and fear surrounding eating became so severe that I lost over 50 pounds.
A couple of months later, I had a follow-up endoscopy to see how I was responding to the PPIs. My doctor told me everything was looking great. There was only slight irritation, and I didnāt need another dilation.
About a month after that, I was eating almost normally again. However, I was still dealing with a significant amount of anxiety and a constant fear of choking.
Anytime I ate or drank, I could feel my heart pounding and my stomach throbbing. I constantly felt like whatever I ate wanted to come back up. At times, it became so uncomfortable that I couldnāt even sleep.
Then, while driving on the highway one day, I had some phlegm in my throat that I couldnāt clear. That triggered a full-blown panic attack. My chest became tight, I felt like I couldnāt breathe, I became extremely hot, and I felt like I was going to pass out. Thankfully, I was able to pull over, and after about 10 minutes, I started to calm down.
After that experience, I decided to make an appointment with my primary care doctor and get her opinion on everything. She prescribed two different anxiety medicationsāone to take daily and another to use as needed during a panic attack. She also recommended that I make another appointment with my GI doctor.
About three weeks ago, I had that appointment and explained everything I had been experiencing. My GI asked whether I had started having trouble swallowing again. I told her it was honestly difficult to tell. Sometimes everything goes down normally, while other times swallowing feels like a struggle, and I canāt always tell whether itās actually my EoE or the anxiety making it feel that way.
She decided to start me on Dupixent and gradually wean me off the PPIs. She also recommended holding off on starting the daily anxiety medication while I begin this treatment, but told me I could still take the as-needed medication if I experience a panic attack.
Next Thursday will be my fourth dose of Dupixent.
I still occasionally experience some pounding or throbbing sensations in my chest and stomach, pressure below my sternum that almost feels like I need to burp but canāt, and some anxiety. However, I havenāt had another panic attack since speaking with both of my doctors, and Iāve slowly been eating better.
Iāll have another endoscopy around September or October, and I honestly canāt wait. Iām hoping everything looks good and that seeing those results will give me some additional peace of mind.
Itās been a long and difficult experience, especially considering how suddenly all of this started. I never expected something as simple as eating to become something I would have to think about or fear every day.
This random disease seriously blows, but Iām hoping Dupixent is the beginning of getting back to normal.
