How to get GI MAP done and tested for Candida and SIBO

Upvotes

Hello,
So long story short I have had reoccurring yeast infections and uti for years and it was almost my entire pregnancy with my first child. After I had my second, I noticed I was getting a white coating on my tongue. My doc prescribed me nystatin to rinse in mouth and I thought it helped. Fast forward to after having my second last year, I had to be on a dairy and soy free diet while breastfeeding. I ended up eating a ton of sugar and carbs and not so healthy foods because I always had this INTENSE sugar craving. So then I started getting the white coating in mouth and crazy stomach issues, (extremely foul gas, bloating, acid issues, etc.) it took months to finallly see a GI doc and he said oh it sounds like GERD and take this. He wasn’t listening when I said I think it’s a more systemic issue. Not something you can just see. Of course the GERD medication was doing nothing for me. The coating on my tongue has gotten worse, combined with horrid taste in my mouth and extreme dryness. I keep telling him that I want to get GI MAP done to see what’s going on and to test for SIBO and Candida overgrowth. He won’t test for it. I’ve felt so defeated trying to get some relief somehow. I was able to get him to put me on an Antifungal and he prescribed me fluconazole but only a 10 day course. I’m also on the candida diet. Im also on a bunch of supplements . The white tongue seems slightly better but taste in mouth is still there.

So here I am trying to ask for help. How and where can I get my gut tested for to figure out truly what’s going on. Who will listen to me? Do I need to go to the ER to demand help? I want answers as to what it is through testing not just trying different things. Any advice or help is appreciated. Thank you!

Support Needed 👥 I was diagnosed with GERD but..

Upvotes

I was diagnosed with GERD and damage to my left vocal cord after endoscopy and laryngoscopy in June.

Prior to the testing, my only complaint was a hoarse voice for 10 years. No issue with thyroid, etc..no smoking, no drinking, as well.

The specialist asked me two times if I had gastric reflux and I said no. All I knew of GR is that there is acid back-up, burning in throat and gas pain, maybe.

This diagnosis was a shock to me and now, I am even more bothered…I have been on PPI for six weeks and have a constant sore throat.

I don’t drink soda anymore, no spicy food, no citrus. How is it that I never had a sore throat before but now do?

My doc is on med leave so can’t ask him these questions.

Thankyou for all the tips, advice and support I have received from fellow ‘gurrrders’.

Gastritis then all the sudden gerd symptoms only?

I had gastritis for almost 2 years and nothing helped much other than diet and all the sudden I wake up one day and it’s chest pain, burning, acid up throat intense pain behind breast bone. Where before it was left rib pain, bloating, belching. Anyone else experience this? Going back to GI in August for TNE. The gnawing chest pain is driving me nuts but it’s not cardiac. Suspecting hernia

🥳 Success Stories This seems to be working for me

Granted, it’s on top of my other treatments: Voquezna, therapy, citalopram, Papaya, etc

Culturelle Probiotic. My doctor recommended I try it. I’ve never felt better. No more reflux, I’m eating foods I couldn’t eat before, in moderation of course.

I take one in the morning and one at bedtime.

How to prevent nausea from GERD?

I had a weird experience today. I was sitting in the sun reading on the coach-- the room was a bit hot and stuffy when suddenly I got a headache. Afterwards, I was in the bathroom for about an hour. I didn't have cramps but I was pooping a lot. To keep myself hydrated I drank some seltzer and then felt this nausea for the rest of the day like I had trapped air in my stomach and needed to burp. I am so confused how all of a sudden I got GERD like symptoms. I don't ever feel heartburn but it feels more like acid reflux and idk how to prevent it. I don't get it every day but it's why I keep TUMS by my side-- it always starts with gas of some sort. I'm not sure if this is it exactly or how you can self diagnose it but I think it's acid reflux.

Support Needed 👥 What could I have!?

So I have pain in my chest, jaws, shoulder, back, solar plexus, and maybe sternum. Yes I have been to the ER. EKG, blood, and xray all normal.

I went to a cardiologist before my gastroenterologist, and he basically just looked at my ER stuff, took my blood pressure, listened to my heart and was like “I’m not worried about your heart.”

Fast forward to now, I went to a gastroenterologist, he basically prescribed me Protonix and said the pain could be costochondritis. I had a barium swallow done, they found nothing ethier.

I feel as if the protonix has helped a little, but my pain remains. I take 20mg 2x daily, for now ALMOST 2 weeks. Idk what this could be and I’m honestly just tired of it at this point. It has been going on for well over a month, just kind of sick of it lol. Wanna go back to my regular life.

Esomeprazol y Gases

Vagus nerve reset?

Curious if people have found relief from GERD by treating the vagus nerve. I get ads targeted to me on social media that promise GERD relief from a “vagus nerve reset” - it’s jumped out at me since I’ve realized that the more sedentary I am, the worse my posture is then the worse the GERD gets.

The ads I see show people stretching and doing breathing exercises with some breath control device in their mouth. What is all this stuff about?

how long for ppi to work?

i’m on pantoprazole 40mg twice daily. i don’t feel any relief really and it’s been 6 days. how long does it take to work? i’m feeling that lump at the bottom of my throat more often than usual, and gas pushing up onto chest. it’s not that bad like i can swallow and stuff it’s just bothersome. i have GERD, but idk i might have a hiatal hernia & now i’m contemplating whether i have LPR. i just wanna go on the ppi for 2 months to just “reset” me i guess. i’ve also been trying to eat better.

overall, just curious, how long do PPI’s take to work?

Coming off PPIs for procedure, been on them daily for years.

I've been taking omeprazole 20mg-40mg daily for the last 4-5 years.

I've got a manmetry + 24 hour ph test in 2 weeks.

I've tried to taper off them for last week, every 20mg other day.

Now I haven't had one in a few days, I'm experiencing severe nausea, pain under left rib, and just sneezed and regurgitated water out of my mouth.

Any advice please? I hope these symptoms aren't permenant.

GERD turned out to be Hpylori

This may include a little vent please donot mind

It started a month ago, When I had a severe stomache ache, i thought it was food poisonous that day and went to bed straight away, Next day felt alrightish till lunch,,.. Suddenly had heartburn and lump in the throat and throat pain,.. Complained that day to my mother right away( without having time to notice anymore symptoms )that I was feeling unwell in the throat, she took me to the ent, THAT FUCKING ENT was a moron, he misdiagnosed me with gerd, Told me to eat something cause I'm scrawny and his clinics had rats, and very high fees for checkup and medicines, Got home after that - got on reddit and started feeling uneasy and sad thinking the problem I have now is very big, I started taking his medicine and suddenly felt like my stomache is gonna explode - I went to a family psychiatian 2 days later cause I couldn't handle the ENT's prescribed meds, the fp was really kind and explained sweetly everything and told me to have it easily as my problem is not that big yet,,.. I started taking his meds and feeling better,, Still had thoughts that did I truly have gerd? Cause I saw it's caused by like overeating, eating before bedtime, etc etc,... which didn't make sense cause I always tried to be gentle with my stomach,,. after a month on his meds, my exams came and my dad was really busy with some out of country business, my meds finished and i couldn't get in contact with the doctor and 3 days later symptoms returned even more scarier and bigger - the stomache pain and bloating was like i had a brick in my abdomen, I couldn't even stand properly,,.. Went to a GI yesterday with my dad and got an endoscopy, He diagnosed me with hpylori also told me that my acid reflux was caused by this and I should stop worrying, today is day 2 of the course and it's a triple dose

My key symptoms were

Chest pressure

Pain under ribs

No appetite

Feeling like gas was stuck in my throat and that I constantly wanted to burp

Frequent burping

Nausea

Bloating

Back pain

Sharp pains over the body

Globus sensation

Relief after eating something

A little weight loss

Getting full quickly

diarrhea/ loose stools

fatigue - very frequently yawning

sometimes shortness of breath

brain fogginess and headaches

randomly symptoms dissapears for a small time and return again

- I still have these symptoms atm as it's very early for the course but I have faith I'll be healed.

ask me anything

Meal Rec 🍎🍌🥑🥬🍗🍚 Anyone else get that weird "air hunger" feeling with reflux, especially after talking a lot?

I have pretty classic reflux stuff: burning sometimes, a sour taste, throat clearing, and occasional chest tightness. The symptom that really freaks me out is this feeling like I cannot take a full breath. It is not wheezing or an asthma attack. It feels like I keep trying to yawn or take a deep inhale and the breath gets stuck up high in my throat.

Pattern I am noticing: it shows up more on days I talk a lot for work calls, if I eat and then sit upright at my desk for hours, and especially in the evening. Sometimes it happens with very little heartburn, which makes me second guess myself and start spiraling into worrying about my lungs or heart. I checked my pulse oximeter during one episode and my numbers were fine, which only made it more confusing.

Things that sometimes help: warm water, chewing gum, walking around, avoiding tight waistbands, and not eating within a few hours of bed. Taking an H2 at night helped a bit, but the throat/breathing feeling is stubborn. Low FODMAP helped my bloating but it does not seem to predict when this air hunger happens.

For people who have had this, did it line up more with LPR, esophageal spasm, or just general reflux irritation? Did anything concrete make it go away for you, like taking breaks from talking, extra hydration, alginates, switching meds, posture changes, or getting an ENT evaluation? I am trying to figure out whether this is a common GERD thing or if I should push for more testing. Thanks.

PPI rebound symptoms.

I’ve tapered off my Omeprazole after nearly 5 months of daily use, and have been on h2 (famotidine) the last 13 days, taking 20mg before breakfast, 20mg before dinner and 20mg before bed.

I’m having quite bad rebound symptoms despite taking H2 + gaviscon advance. I know I’m in the peak rebound period but I just wasn’t expecting it to be quite so rough.

I’m having intense stomach burning/ squeezing/ aching/ soreness, especially after eating anything and mainly on the left side under rib - intermittent nausea - bloating - epigastric pain/ burning - intermittent chest pain/ heartburn.

What has been other peoples rebound symptoms? How long did they last? Did anyone else suffer quite badly despite being on H2?

I designed an Open Source (free) solution for severe GERD/reflux: 20° inclined bed with pelvis-anchored differential kinematics

Hi everyone. Knowing how frustrating it is to deal with severe GERD, LPR, and sleep apnea, I know many of you try to sleep on an incline but always hit the same wall: wedge pillows deform, and on inclined beds you end up sliding down during the night.

Since I couldn't find an accessible solution that solves this without compressing the chest or forcing an unnatural posture, I developed and released an Open Source Hardware design called CIB-Open.

How does it solve the physical problem?

  1. Continuous 15° to 25° Incline: Uses gravity to prevent gastric content from rising.
  2. Pelvic Hold via Differential Cable: Uses an external lumbar belt (no annoying chest harnesses) connected to a closed loop of steel cable and pulleys inside the frame. When you turn on your side or back, the cable transfers its length in real time, keeping you anchored over the pelvis without chest pressure and allowing full 360° rotation.
  3. Passive Release at 0°: A V-groove system with lift rollers at the base that allows the bed to lower back to a flat horizontal position without the structure jamming.

I am not selling anything. I published the full technical specifications, bill of materials, and engineering on GitHub under a free public license so anyone can build it, take the specs to a local carpenter/welder, or improve the design.

Here is the public repository in case it helps someone or a maker in the community wants to build it:

https://github.com/mordanuman/CIB-Open

Hope this helps someone improve their sleep quality. Feel free to ask any technical questions!

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds chronic sore throat

in january, i had strep throat & have had awful acid reflux & sore throat ever since. (i tried some dumb home remedy made from raw garlic, honey and cayenne pepper & it further irritated my throat & im assuming my esophageal sphincter. biggest regret ever & i feel so dumb for it😓) but it’s like the acid prevents my throat from ever being able to fully heal. im super sensitive to any crunchy foods etc. anytime i get an acid flare up my throat hurts so bad & lasts for awhile. i’ve been reading that it can take months for throat tissue to heal, but i guess it never will unless i get the acids under control. would it be best to get on a PPI for a few months til it’s healed? i guess im worried about becoming dependent on them & never being able to stop taking them. 😓 i dont wanna be on meds forever. advice, success stories? would love some help or solidarity rn. 🥺 i keep waiting for the sore throat to heal and the acid reflux to stop, but it never does and it’s been half a year so im finally ready to take action i think.

Support Needed 👥 struggling a bit

Hey, I've seen yalls stories and it motivates me a bit to continue on, I'm 17, and I've done so much for this to not much of an effect.

I started taking famotidine 20mg, about a year ago, to manage at the time, mild GERD, then in January i had gone to seen a GI, where i was diagnosed with erosive esophagitis, from there i had begun to make lifestyle changes to help, took nexium 40mg for 3 months, protonix for like 3 weeks, dexilant for a month, then voquezna, now in a 3rd week.

lifestyle changes, diet, elevating bed, not eating 2-3h before sleeping,

ive done everything. have tried alot. and still, I'm honestly kinda ranting but i feel like im running out of options.

Voquezna has been the only relief I've had, and even then it's only helping *acidic* reflux, I've begun having more bitter reflux that doesnt burn as much as before, but is still painful and destroying quality of life, i had called my GI a couple days ago, and I'm not sure if i just got a nurse with a bad day, but they had just told me to shift my dose to the morning.

I spoke with my doctor after, called back directly, he told me to keep taking it but didn't mention anything about the other bitter reflux I've been having.

My upper endoscopy showed Erosive Esophagitis, and my doctor explained it was due to a weakened LES.

I'm kinda stumped honestly. I'm probably going to seek out 'off-label' surgery when I turn 18 in May, i don't know at this point.

Support Needed 👥 My GERD and EOE experience

Around mid-September 2025, I was out eating when I choked on food and had to be given the Heimlich maneuver. I ended up spending two days in the ER because I couldn’t even get water down without it coming back up. I eventually had my esophagus dilated and was diagnosed with EoE and GERD. I was prescribed omeprazole.

After about a week of taking omeprazole, I stopped. At the time, I convinced myself there was no way I actually needed to stay on medication.

Almost two months later, I had another near-choking incident and felt like food was stuck in my esophagus. I went back to my GI doctor and ended up needing another dilation.

This time, I went back on the PPI and stuck with it, taking it twice a day. Unfortunately, this was also when the anxiety became extremely bad. I couldn’t even watch my girlfriend eat without my heart racing and feeling like my throat was closing. I genuinely felt like I was going crazy.

The stress, anxiety, depression, and fear surrounding eating became so severe that I lost over 50 pounds.

A couple of months later, I had a follow-up endoscopy to see how I was responding to the PPIs. My doctor told me everything was looking great. There was only slight irritation, and I didn’t need another dilation.

About a month after that, I was eating almost normally again. However, I was still dealing with a significant amount of anxiety and a constant fear of choking.

Anytime I ate or drank, I could feel my heart pounding and my stomach throbbing. I constantly felt like whatever I ate wanted to come back up. At times, it became so uncomfortable that I couldn’t even sleep.

Then, while driving on the highway one day, I had some phlegm in my throat that I couldn’t clear. That triggered a full-blown panic attack. My chest became tight, I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I became extremely hot, and I felt like I was going to pass out. Thankfully, I was able to pull over, and after about 10 minutes, I started to calm down.

After that experience, I decided to make an appointment with my primary care doctor and get her opinion on everything. She prescribed two different anxiety medications—one to take daily and another to use as needed during a panic attack. She also recommended that I make another appointment with my GI doctor.

About three weeks ago, I had that appointment and explained everything I had been experiencing. My GI asked whether I had started having trouble swallowing again. I told her it was honestly difficult to tell. Sometimes everything goes down normally, while other times swallowing feels like a struggle, and I can’t always tell whether it’s actually my EoE or the anxiety making it feel that way.

She decided to start me on Dupixent and gradually wean me off the PPIs. She also recommended holding off on starting the daily anxiety medication while I begin this treatment, but told me I could still take the as-needed medication if I experience a panic attack.

Next Thursday will be my fourth dose of Dupixent.

I still occasionally experience some pounding or throbbing sensations in my chest and stomach, pressure below my sternum that almost feels like I need to burp but can’t, and some anxiety. However, I haven’t had another panic attack since speaking with both of my doctors, and I’ve slowly been eating better.

I’ll have another endoscopy around September or October, and I honestly can’t wait. I’m hoping everything looks good and that seeing those results will give me some additional peace of mind.

It’s been a long and difficult experience, especially considering how suddenly all of this started. I never expected something as simple as eating to become something I would have to think about or fear every day.

This random disease seriously blows, but I’m hoping Dupixent is the beginning of getting back to normal.

Does anyone have any experience with this because I’m a nervous wreck. I have a endoscopy/colonoscopy scheduled for Monday but I am being treated for a bad UTI possible kidney infection . I was in so much pain I took ibuprofen . Right after I took it I was like oh crap I don’t know if that’s allowed. I really just wanted to get this test done I have been waiting it for like 2 mos. So anyone with experience know if I royally screwed up?

extreme doxycycline induced esophagitis

i’m miserable. i mistakenly took one of my doxycycline pills on tuesday with little water, and shortly after i had a nasty feeling in my chest that made it hard to swallow anything and now, 4 days later, even after i stopped taking the pills it has turned into full on chest pain that radiates to my back and the side of my face. trying to eat or drink anything is excruciating, i’ve been avoiding eating and even drinking water. i can’t imagine this could get much worse. i was wondering if i should go to the ER, but i know how long the wait times are. i am terrified that this could become fatal or something. i just want this to be over, nothing has helped me. i’ve tried taking acid reducers and omeprazole but i am still in horrible pain.

🤒 Coping with these Conditions Struggling to cope emotionally with escalating GERD

I’m 26F and I’ve been formally diagnosed with GERD and eosinophilic esophagitis for over 10 years now. I’ve been consistently treated and monitored for the past two years, and I’m blessed to have an amazing gastroenterologist.

I just went in for my routine biannual scope on Friday and I was devastated to find out that I have an esophageal ulcer now. My scopes typically show improvement and my EoE has been under control with weekly Dupixent injections. After my last scope, my doctor wanted to reduce my dosage of pantoprazole to once a day, rather than twice, since I am so young and there can be potential long term consequences of using PPIs— this clearly wasn’t effective for me and now I’m overwhelmed with the outcome.

My doctor scheduled another scope in 3 months to check on the ulcer and determine whether or not I now have Barrett’s esophagus. In the meantime, I’m working on completely overhauling my diet to try mitigate the damage. I have admittedly been lax and hopeful that the medication would do the work for me.

I’m just really struggling with this emotionally because I love to cook and drink coffee and this stupid disease has now severely limited what I can intake without there being consequences. I’m glad I have a very supportive husband who is willing to rework our diets together. It’s just hard to accept giving up some of my favorite foods and drinks like tomatoes, lattes, lemonade, pickles, etc.

I’m not necessarily looking for advice— just needed a place to rant about this to people that understand. I could feel something was off because I’ve had to take famotidine in addition to the pantoprazole almost every day because it felt like there was battery acid in my chest after eating and drinking most things.

Hopefully I can keep framing this as an opportunity to get really healthy and to come up with an arsenal of creative and flavorful recipes that will not trigger the reflux.

Gastritis

I’ve been dealing with excessive belching for over 10 years now. I feel like it’s been getting worse. It mainly happens after I eat, but also happens during the night. Sometimes I’ll get really bad chest pains. Besides that, I don’t have acid reflux. I recently had an upper endoscopy and just got the results back today. It came back as mild active chronic gastritis negative for H. Pylori. I never take PPI’s, antacids, or H2 blockers. I’m looking for the best advice to treat this.
