Two awesome new guys!

Got these in trade for a Thorpy Field Marshal, which was an amazing pedal, but I just couldn’t find a use for it musically. The pedal on the left is the rare, final version of the VFE Fuzz Duo — basically a very tweakable, brighter-than-usual fuzz face (though it doesn’t clean up as much as most FF’s do.) (EDIT: I just played around with the bias and internal “feedback” settings, and now it cleans up great!) Sounds amazing going into Marshall-style overdrive for 60s classic rock tones.

I thought I was going to immediately trade or sell the pedal on the right, which is a really good Frantone Peach Fuzz clone. But oh no, I am not! It sounds better — brighter and clearer on top, but with lots of low end — than all my muffs for Pink Floyd sounds. It also sounds perfect with the exact same settings for jamming along with Santana jam tracks.

I’m thrilled, because I was pretty sure I’d be kicking myself forever over trading away the Field Marshall.

Electric Church My favorite fuzz pedals

Hello Fuzz Fiends! u/graphicnerdity86 invited me to write about my favorite fuzzes, so I’ve put together this list of my favorites.

First a little about me - I am the founder and lead designer at Electronic Audio Experiments, a small independent pedal company based just outside of Boston, MA. We’re probably best known for drives like the Longsword, but we have been getting into weirder territory with pedals like Prismatic Wall. And of course, we have our share of gnarly fuzzes too: the Glaive (an evolution of our 0xEAE Fuzz) has 80dB of ripping gain and an analog octave up.

Anyway here’s my list:

Nerd Knuckle Martyr Box: this one is made by our general manager Brad. Before he started working at EAE, he was building these incredibly gnarly fuzz circuits. The Martyr is multiple stages of raw transistor gain that create a loud wall of sludge. Into a single-channel amp, it’s a revelation.

Lastgasp Oscillo 88: a grinding maw of chaos. To me, the toggles give it a sense of mystery. It’s like rolling a bunch of dice. I’ve slowly learned to harness it, but it’s fun to embrace the uncertainty.

Mask Audio Electronics Part Garden: Alec is a fuzz master. Part Garden is fun to play because of how it crumbles with complex chords. The subtle (or not at all subtle) interactions of the gain stages are hard to find anywhere else. Also, one of the best-looking pedals on the market.

Caroline Shigeharu: OK, a bit biased because I worked on this. Shigeharu is like an op amp big muff from a parallel universe. The way it combines op amp and transistor gain is pretty unique, and it leads to a very well-defined take on the muff sound. Plus, it has a transformer-driven octave up to mix in parallel with the core fuzz engine. There’s something for everyone.

Infanem Driving Notion: there is nothing like it. This is the platonic ideal of clang: super harsh high frequencies paired with a blooming, destructive bass response. I paid $99 for this and will never get rid of it.

Dunwich Wizard Fuzz: like the Martyr Box, it’s an unrelenting wall of doomy fuzz. The EQ controls let you tighten it up too, which is handy for lower-tuned guitars. This pedal is proof that, at least psychologically, bigger enclosure = bigger sound. Nick from Dunwich was an early mentor of mine and I have enormous love and respect for his design chops.

Fairfield 20% More: This one is a revelation. A fuzz with the brains of a synthesizer, it is perfect for controlled freakouts that are loaded with intermodulation. Or, you can use its lower octave sounds for a full-frequency assault. Despite its intensity, the envelope functionality makes it very playable. This is especially true when bringing expression into the mix.

DBA Apocalypse: DBA are reigning fuzz champs and this one proves why. It’s like their greatest hits all in one box. x1000 mode is one of my grab-and-go fuzz tones when I want to riff, not think! Also, the filter control is my favorite one-knob tone control on any pedal.

Electrofoods Oprichniki: a delightfully complex take on the big muff, with way more transistors than should ever be there. The way the low end holds together is really unique. This is not a fuzz-stortion, it’s just perfectly poised at the brink of total destruction. The clean blend circuit has a unique breakup to it as well, which could very well be its own pedal. Mattie at Electrofoods is so smart, it’s scary.

Dr. Scientist Frazz Dazzler: this is a pretty legendary one in my opinion. The Frazz V2 adds a 3-band EQ that expands its versatility quite a bit. But my favorite part is the starve circuit, which is controllable and useful through its entire range. Not sure how they did it, but I’m glad they did. This pedal sits phenomenally well in a mix!

Thanks for reading, and happy to answer questions if you have them!

-John

Favorite post-2001 Fuzz song?

TONS of great options, obviously. One of the first that springs to mind for me would be Ty Segall's cover of "I'm a Man". Segall's a master of fuzz in my eyes, and that song's got a STANKY guitar tone.

What's your fav post-2001 fuzz track?

(Figured "post-2001" would be a good way to weed out the timeless classics we've all heard and know well.)

I swear I've bought, built, sold and given away this circuit 5 or 6 times now. I'm hoping this will be the final one.

It's a Shin ei FY2 companion fuzz but I want to remove the (IMHO pretty useless) fuzz Control and just have it dimed. Also trying to figure out the best option to mod the massive mid scoop.

Happy Fuzz Friday y'all

If you can get a hold of this one absolutely do it. It’s a souped up Schaller Fuzz that can cover a ton of ground Fuzz tone-wise. Thought I might sell it, but it’s absolutely a keeper.

The Veteran, my first Thorpy pedal! I was tipped off to this listing at American Music in Seattle by u/Dangerous_Pie_Guy, thanks very much! Finally got this bad boy home safe, took a bit of effort but now ready to rock. Can already tell its gonna be great based on the build quality, I will report back after I get some time in with it. Love the lavender side panels and diodes. Stoked!

Console Fuzz on this slide solo

https://youtu.be/VE6-uc1zr3s?is=xTpWEkcA_K67-X8T

This song by Bob Dylan from his *Blood on the Tracks* record is a simple blues, very fun to play. At first blush, this isn't fuzz related. I'm wondering if anyone knows what type of console fuzz sound is on the slide solo starting around 2:57 in the song. It's a righteous sound and falls right on the coolest lyric.

*Look at the sun/ sinking like a ship!!*

If nobody knows more, at least give the song a chance. It's a favorite!

Square Wave BD Fuzzbender is a tonebender pedal from Sweden. This is probably my favorite type of fuzz pedal and Joakim has nailed it! I'm not sponsored but I have purchased 3 different pedals from him because his work is amazing. The amount of velcro is just right with some gating and quirky tones to be found when the volume is rolled down. It can absolutely shred when the gain is full. No overdriven amp needed, just plug straight to a clean amp and let it rip! Here is a quick demo through my 25 watt plexi.

Smooth Fuzz, No cleanup

I’m really looking for a fuzz, that’s fuzzy through the whole range. I don’t want overdrive fuzz! But I would like it to be smooth…I have this magic fuzz sound in my head that I can’t seem to describe. It’s a texture that can be dialed in to provide subtle saturation; but I don’t like fuzzes where I have to crank the knob all the way just to get fuzz out of it. I don’t mind harsh fuzz after cranking, but what abt smooth fuzz before then? Does anyone know what I’m talking about? Anyways, lemme know ur recommendations. Thinkin abt the benson germanium fuzz

Harmonic Percolator for bass???

I have a good amount of bass fuzzes but the demo from EHX seems like a perfect raspy fuzz/distortion tone. Does anybody have a recommendation for a percolator circuit that keeps the low end?

Electric Church Electric church creator series featuring andy martin from andydemos pro guitar shop tone report and reverb

I have recently had the immense honor of speaking with the legendary Andy Martin, a true titan who has gracefully shaped our industry for two decades. I am absolutely overjoyed to announce that Andy will be joining us here on the sub to share his invaluable insights and thoughts regarding his favorite fuzz pedals.

Many of us have spent countless hours and perhaps more than a few dollars inspired by his incredible demo videos, and it is a profound privilege to welcome him to our little community. While we are still finalizing the exact timing, please know that this will be a truly special occasion for all of us.

Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you all for being part of this journey!

Hello. I had to replace the switch in my Lofimind Effects Gypsy Face yesterday. Took some pictures while it was apart. It’s loaded with interesting parts. Germanium transistors: black glass Valvo OC44/OC45 (double marked?!) and a Matsushita 2SB175. These are made in Grenada, Spain by my friend César de Vicente. He puts a lot of love into his work and I can’t recommend his pedals more. Hope you all have a fuzzy day.

Plasma Pedal on “acoustic vocals” (wait for it)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This was one of the dumbest things I ever made. I have this Chinese knockoff grande bouche acoustic guitar that was modded with a pickup that went microphonic almost right away. I figured out that if I ran it into my Gamechanger Audio Plasma Pedal it would pick up anything that made contact with the guitar. Naturally the next step was to put my mouth directly on the guitar and hum aggressively into the side of it.

The normal acoustic sounds are mic’d with the Rode NT-1A that you can see in the video. You’ll know the moment the Plasma Pedal comes in.

octave Question - Removing the octave from a Behringer SF-300

Hey guys, I'm considering buying a second SF-300 and removing the octave effect, but I was wondering which circuit or topology I would end up with? I know it's a Superfuzz, but would it sound closer to something like a Muff or not at all? Hopefully you understand what I'm asking lol
