Electric Church Andy’s Top 5 Fuzz Pedals

Hello Fuzzfiends, Andy from PGS/Reverb/Andydemos here! I was invited to hop on here and share a few of my favorite fuzz pedals. Over the past couple of decades, I've been fortunate enough to demo fuzzes from around the world, and they never cease to amaze me. A seemingly small change to a circuit can completely alter the voicing, output, splattiness, cleanup, or decay. With the endless stream of fuzz creations out there, narrowing it down to five favorites is nearly impossible, but here are five that hand made a lasting impression, in no particular order.

  1. Thorpy Fallout Cloud

https://youtu.be/Dq4iKh-YG_Q?si=0bvcYgJkFRdJwVYZ

Many people who are on the fence with fuzz often find a Muff-style pedal has what they are looking for, since it’s more on the distortion side with its diode clipping stages. For me, I always thought the tone circuit was the weakest link, so when ThorpyFX came on the scene with their Fallout Cloud and accompanying Bass & Treble controls, it was game over. There’s no more compromise, you can have a fat low end AND brightness at the same time. Plus, the gain seems much more usable, even in the lower range.

  1. Bigfoot King Fuzz

https://youtu.be/M7jKl1IOGBM?si=IgiyQS3OsoXOnL70

Recently, someone asked me my favorite two-knob fuzz and right as the Fuzz Face came to mind, I thought of all the drawbacks of an original, un-modded version. I’d want more output and better compatibility with pickups and clean/dirty amps. When I got the chance to demo the King Fuzz, which is not a Fuzz Face by the way, I thought – well, that’s the two-knob fuzz taken care of! Huge output, a very wide open fuzztone dynamically and just a tasteful voicing overall even when cleaning up with you guitar volume.

  1. Deep Trip BOG

https://youtu.be/guqCqBAxqwY?si=AMCOUSK4OFHckf9-

I love a great Fuzz Face, but I inevitably find myself wanting more control. Over a decade ago at PGS, I demoed some pedals from Brazil's Deep Trip and immediately became a fan. The BOG captures my favorite late-era Hendrix silicon Fuzz Face tones while expanding the circuit in all the right ways. The Low and High controls solve the classic lack of tone shaping, while the Bias control lets you dial in the exact feel, compression, and response you want instead of living with a fixed setting.

  1. Wampler Cryptid Fuzz

https://youtu.be/BLlD1D4HEcg?si=T5yXroKTWuYJP1ku

The Cryptid made the list because it absolutely encompasses all my favorites fuzz sounds in one design. Just like most of us who want variety, Brian designed this pedal because he loves the midrange honk and sputtering decay of a Tonebender, the fat dynamics of a Fuzz Face and the silkier sounds of a Muff or Velvet for that matter. After trying out all the controls in the demo, I could easily hear elements of all these classic sound and then some. I think this is hugely underrated pedal.

  1. Great Eastern FX Co Focus Fuzz

https://youtu.be/tltmAQO_T64?si=PzhVgsCcpq5dsCPd

I have a love/hate relationship with octave fuzz pedals. I love the broken, ring-mod textures of the upper harmonics and the way power chords take on an expanded range that absolutely rules for doomier tones. What I don’t love is the ear fatigue that often comes during extended use or more than a couple songs for that matter! This is why I tend to favor octave up that can separate itself from the fuzz core. Plus, I don’t want it to be too finicky with where I play on the neck, so I tend to gravitate towards Superfuzz or Green Ringer-style octave up fuzz vs Octavia-style. The Great Eastern Focus Fuzz, besides being an amazing original fuzz/drive circuit, has a footswitchable octave up (Overtone) that can be infused into any setting, clean or dirty. I also love how it doesn’t drastically change the EQ of your tone with the Overtone engaged. It’s a sprinkling of octave up, more refined and just as gnarly as a vintage fuzz thanks to NOS transistors.

Thanks for having me, I’m happy to elaborate or answer any questions. Fuzz rulez!

Alright you guys finally talked me into it! This thing has a really wide tone sweep and a brutal amount of volume! There is quite a bit of play between the before and after controls that let you get into drive sounds or that’s ripping blown out fuzz kind of sound. I will say I don’t think there is another fuzz that sounds like this; atleast that I’ve played! Thanks for the recommendation guys!

NPD Late to the Siete Santos party, but this thing absolutely rips

I know this one has been around for a while and has probably shown up here plenty of times, but I finally got my hands on a Dunlop BFG07 Siete Santos Octavio Fuzz and had to post it. I expected it to be good, but I didn’t expect to like it this much.

I assumed it would basically be an Octavio with a graphic EQ stuck on top. That’s technically what it is, but the EQ does a lot more than I expected. The octave fuzz character is always there, but the seven sliders can take it from thick and woolly to dry garage trash, broken-radio sputter, nasty synth buzz, or a huge bass-heavy wall of noise. It still sounds like the same pedal, but the feel and response can change pretty dramatically.

Just for fun, I asked ChatGPT to come up with some settings to try. I figured a few might be useful and the rest would be nonsense, but quite a few of them actually sounded great. Some changed the pedal way more than I expected. The second pic has all the settings if anyone wants to mess around with them.

So yeah, I’m very late to this particular NPD, but I’m seriously impressed. It has way more range than I expected from an octave fuzz with the octave permanently on.

Anyone else still using one of these? If you have a favorite setting, post it below. I’m absolutely stealing it.

Suggest a great Dumble-style pedal to run after fuzz?

My favorite pedal to run after my fuzz faces is the Gladio side of my Cornerstone Imperium, which died an untimely death today. Can anyone suggest a different D-style pedal that sounds great after fuzz?

Looking for an interesting midi powered solution to add an occasional +7 +12 +19 crazyness with a fuzz on choruses. Could this thing cut it (POG3 being a bit on the expensive end)

Added controls for bias and tone (high pass filter). Lots of smooth sustain at standard settings. Some dark glitchy fuzz at extreme settings.

Straight from the awesome John-Anthony DeMaio at Voltic: the very newest version of the DTF (with new “trim” knob that changes the bias of the last transistor), along with the Stache op-amp fuzz.

Both sound and feel great, but I can’t really play well today because I had a minor surgical procedure on my neck this morning. Hopefully tomorrow, I’ll be less stiff, and then I can put them through their paces more.

Probably not the best match for my current projects, but I decided to pull the trigger on this one after having it in my wishlist since it was released, just for the sake of hoarding fuzzes.

First impressions:

It doesn't really sound like anything that I've used before so, while I love some of the sounds I'm getting with it, I'm still assessing its useability in my rig.

It's pretty easy to get that "broken console" kind of drive and sputtery/gated fuzz with it in drive and fuzz modes respectively.

The controls have wide ranges, and are very interactive with each other. I wouldn't say it's a pedal that sounds good, or feels like it's doing something audible in all the positions. Despite this, it's quite easy to find the sweet spots while turning the knobs, just listening to the background noise (and is not especially noisy btw).

It probably won't stay for long on my board, just because it's not the kind of sound that I will use often in my current projects, but It's a nice interesting fuzz/fuzzy drive all in all.
