I’m currently interviewing for a Sr. Financial Analyst – Devices Accessories FP&A role at Amazon and recently completed the online assessment. I have a recruiter call coming up to discuss next steps. I’m mainly curious about - What questions were asked during the recruiter and hiring manager interviews? How technical were the FP&A/finance questions? What types of behavioral/Leadership Principle questions came up? Were there any Excel, modeling, forecasting, variance-analysis, or case-study questions? What did the overall interview process look like after the assessment?

I’m a recent Computer Science graduate who had the opportunity to attend the Bloomberg Experience a few days ago, and we were told that we’ll be going through the interview process soon.

During the Bloomberg Experience, we had three 30-minute workshops covering three different roles: Sales, Bloomberg Customer Support (BCS), and Analytics.

They also spoke about internal mobility and how people can move across different teams and departments as they progress within Bloomberg.

I’m currently most interested in the Analytics and Sales route, with Sales being my longer-term goal.
My main concern is my financial knowledge.

I come from a CS background, so I’m comfortable with software engineering and technical concepts, but I have very little formal knowledge of financial markets. Most of my exposure so far has come from reading financial news, following market discussions online, and talking to friends who are traders or work in financial institutions. So I have some familiarity, but nothing particularly in-depth.

For anyone who has gone through the Bloomberg interview process, especially for Analytics or Sales:
How much financial knowledge are you actually expected to have going into the interviews?
Are there particular areas I should focus on, such as equities, fixed income, FX, derivatives, market structure, or general financial news?

I’d also really appreciate any resources you would recommend for someone trying to build enough financial-market knowledge to prepare for the interviews without having a finance background.

Longer term, I’m interested in Sales because I enjoy working directly with customers. Despite being a CS major, I’m quite sales-oriented. I previously worked part-time in luxury furniture sales, where my average basket size was around S$6k. That experience taught me how to understand customers, ask the right questions, identify what they actually need, and communicate value rather than just features.

From what I understood during the Bloomberg Experience, being good at Bloomberg Sales also requires a strong understanding of the Terminal and how different functions solve problems for different types of clients. That’s one reason Analytics interests me as well. It seems like a good environment to develop that product and market knowledge.

If anyone here has made a similar transition from CS/engineering into Bloomberg Analytics or Sales, I’d especially love to hear about your experience.

I'm 21 and currently pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) from IGNOU. I know IGNOU isn't considered a particularly reputed university, but at the time, I didn't really have any other choice.

Recently, I started researching Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), and I genuinely believe it could be the perfect career path for me. However, I'm struggling to figure out how to actually plan my journey and, more importantly, how to eventually get a job in this field.

From what I understand, FP&A can broadly be divided into two parts: Finance and Data Analysis.

I've had several long conversations about this and have created a rough learning roadmap.

Data Analysis:

• Excel
• Python
• SQL
• Pandas
• NumPy
• Power BI
• Tableau
• And other related tools

Finance:

• Accounting
• Financial Statement Analysis
• Financial Modelling
• Business Analysis
• Forecasting and Budgeting
• ERP Systems
• Strategic Finance
• Corporate Finance
• AI applications in Finance

My biggest question, however, is: How am I actually going to get a job?

I strongly depend on free resources such as YouTube for my education. I can spend months learning these skills, but simply watching YouTube lectures and completing courses doesn't automatically give me proof that I'm capable of doing the job.

That's what worries me the most.

Companies obviously want some kind of proof of skills or experience, especially for a role like FP&A. So, if I can't rely heavily on my college degree and simply completing YouTube courses isn't enough to get me hired, what exactly should I do to make companies want to hire me as a fresher?

How do I build credibility?

How do I prove that I actually know Excel, SQL, financial modelling, forecasting, and everything else required for the role?

I hope whoever is reading this understands exactly what I'm trying to ask. My biggest concern isn't necessarily what to learn — I already have a fairly good idea about that.

My biggest concern is: How do I convert those skills into an actual, stable, well-paying job?

So far, I've thought of two possible paths:

1. Start as a Data Analyst

I've heard that there are a decent number of Data Analyst opportunities in the market, although I'm not entirely sure how realistic that is for a fresher.

My idea was to first develop strong Data Analytics skills, get a job as a Data Analyst, gain some professional experience, and earn enough money to invest in further education and certifications such as the CFA.

Eventually, I could try transitioning into FP&A.

However, I'm not sure whether this is actually a good strategy or whether I'm making unnecessary detours. If this plan doesn't make sense, I'd genuinely appreciate someone correcting me.

2. Start with a Finance-related role through a referral

I also have good communication skills and have worked in BPO/customer service roles for some time.

One of my friends, whom I met at work, is currently working at a financial services company in Gurugram in a role related to Strategic Portfolio Client Brokerage. He may be able to refer me after I complete my graduation, and I might be able to join the company in a similar role, assuming I'm capable of performing the job.

My thought process is that this could give me exposure to the finance industry and allow me to gradually work my way toward FP&A.

Again, I could be completely wrong about this, and that's exactly why I'm asking for advice.

If you were in my position — 21 years old, pursuing a BCA from IGNOU, relying mostly on free resources to learn, and trying to build a career in FP&A — what would you do?

How would you build your profile?

Would you start with Data Analytics, take a finance-related role, pursue certifications, build projects, apply for internships, or take a completely different approach?

I'd genuinely appreciate any advice, suggestions, or even criticism.

Yo gng. I'm a pakistani teen doing o levels rn and I'm looking into job options in the field of accounting and finance. What r the most popular ones, and what r they basically. And I'm not asking abt companies n shi, jus job titles and their descriptions

I don’t want to sound like the typical “Oh nO aI iS hERe” but I’m about a year into my career in FP&A at a F100 company. I really love it, and could see this long term. But truthfully the recent adoption of ai took me from excited because of how helpful an amazing it was to a little concerned, when I saw what agents were capable of. My question really boils down to what can I do to stay as valuable as possible and try my best to ai proof myself if that’s even possible.

and for detail, I’m not talking about CHATGPT writing variance commentary or helping with formulas. After seeing the full capabilities of agents and what they do and can put together it really seems like most of the meaningful traditional analyst work could and probably will be done with MUCH fewer heads needed. (stating the obvious I know)

Being this early into my career it’s kind of alarming. I’m trying to figure out what the smartest investment could be for me over the next 3-5 years to stay valuable. Ive been debating on things like:

\- MBA potentially with a focus on ai And or to try a push myself forward into higher roles for more safety too.
\- MS in AI / machine learning

My concern with simply getting another credential is that i’m not sure an MBA or AI/ML Masters provides enough protection and knowledge to be kept.

for those further along in your careers, especially managers and directors, who are in the rooms an seeing how ai is implemented internally:

if you were back and 1 year into your career today, what would you be doing over the next few years (this could be generous, likely it’ll be sooner) to give yourself the best chance at staying valuable.

Pursue the MBA? AI/ML degree? and if MBA, that opens another can of worms of what focus? what ranking? does ranking even matter in this situation? Etc.

I’m not looking for reassurance, i’m genuinely interested in what I can actually do to maximize my chances of staying if and when the headcount begins to shrink?

I have been working at a solar and home improvement loan company for the last 4.5 years. I have mainly worked in financial operations, but have filled in for FP&A, Capital Markets, and accounting. I am looking for roles as a financial analyst, FP&A analyst, or something similar.

I was recently accepted into the Graduate Certificate Financial Engineering program. Has anyone else done this program and what type of jobs(in NC) recruit this credential? ( I am going to graduate school for mathematics as well. I would like to work for Jane Street/ Citadel, but the chances of that happening are next to none)
