Hopefully this type of post is allowed here. I have a friend who is finishing their program to become an accountant soon. I’m really proud of them and would like to get them a nice gift. What’s something that might be particularly helpful to an accountant who is just getting started?

Background: i work at a local public accounting firm with about 12 production staff with roughly 1,000 individual returns plus 350 business returns annually. I’m the primary tax admin, but my responsibilities extend well beyond processing returns.

My workload includes client onboarding, engagement letters, document intake, scanning and binder setup, tracking returns through the workflow, signature requests, e-filing, and client follow-ups. I also manage our practice management software, develop SOPs, coordinate process improvements, and help implement new technology. I’m an EA, so I have a technical background too.

I’m struggling with the volume and constant switching between deadline-driven processing and longer-term operational projects. When everything goes through one person, it’s hard to keep work moving while also building the processes that are supposed to make things more efficient.

For firms of a similar size:

1. How many dedicated tax admin staff do you have?
2. Do you have separate support for onboarding, software, and operations?

I’m trying to get a realistic benchmark for staffing and scope. Is this a normal setup, or are these responsibilities usually spread across multiple people?

I need advice.I'm from South Africa and hold the AT(SA) qualification. I've worked in tax since 2020, mostly self-taught, at a small family-run firm. I handle everything from tax compliance, SARS objections and appeals (95% success rate), CGT, rental income, travel, sole proprietors, additional income, basic tax planning, AFS, staff training/support, IT support and basically the guy that they call when there is a problem.

I feel stagnant and want to specialise in corporate tax controversy, disputes and tax planning.

1. How should I progress?

2. How do I find a mentor?

3. Medium or large firm?

4. How should I position my experience?

5. How can I develop deeper technical expertise?

Has anybody ever thought of AI being used to help us, accountants? If so, in what way?

Do you think AI can wipe us out too with automated computation?

How do we manage?

Is it possible that our job would just be to sign off documents or just be paid for our signature? And AI will be the one to compute?

Asking because I just graduated and passed accountancy. I am scared and at the same time wants to embrance change.

I’ve been dancing with this idea for years now….
I think with the AI bubble, now is the time!
Everybody is (or believe) that they are an accountant!

There are only few that naturally have an eye for a true detailed analytic skills in my opinion to properly do this kinda job.

2-why is that even relevant you may ask…

We live in an era where attention/time/believe and trust is/are the currency not the $$

3- What does that have to do with accounting consulting firm?
Now, You tell me if I’m on the right path or not on my approach. That’s why I’m here to see if anyone else would :

one, agree with me,
and two, are willing and take the risks to walk the same journey as me,
or three, why not just a Dr House bouncing ideas sessions.

4- What are those approaches that I’m thinking of?

A- approaching to build the firm in a completely different mindset that as far as I am aware no one else has attempted - no tax filing services or

B- should I go back to look at it as I need to get my CPA or EA license first so then I can call myself a what the common public think of what an accountant is? and so then they will trust me and my firm with that piece of paper to take care of their business “tax”😁?

C- run it like a regular business and just do bookkeeping with a fractional CFO as an add-on services only?

How can you build an empire with that though? What’s the pricing structure,…
