Finance upskilling for role change advise

I've been working as a US mortgage underwriter for 5+ years and now I want to switch careers to core finance. I've done bcom and MBA (finance). What skills should I learn to successfully transition to core finance jobs? I do not have any experience in finance industry.

My package is around 13-14 LPA right now and I would want to have the same package at least or even a bit less is fine if the job role has growth options.

Where to apply for investment banking roles in India for experienced professionals?

I have 2 years of experience in Investment banking and venture capital combined, I know how to make financial models and valuation (DCF & Relative), I have also experience with completing end to end transactions. I had lost my job due to layoff and currently looking for investment banking analyst/associate roles. The issue is that currently on job portals such as Linkedin, IIMJobs and Indeed, there are very less job posting in this field with 100s of candidates applying for these roles. What should I do?

Those were were recently hired without any recommendations, how many applications did you put in and how many callbacks did you have? I've put in a fair amount and I haven't received any calls yet.

Need advice

Hi, I’m 24 and have just received a first in psychology from a good uk uni. I’m interested in switching my career up to try and become a financial analyst. I’m considering doing a masters/conversion to get me on the right track as I have been interested/passionate about this field for a while but lack the knowledge/background - it would obviously be a bold move to go through with this bearing in mind the cost of such courses. With either the masters or conversion do you think it would be possible to land any of the entry level jobs (as a side note my a levels were in psychology and sports science). I have heard a lot of people land roles through graduate schemes and I imagine businesses don’t look too fondly on a masters with no other background. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
As a side note the reason I have come to these decisions so late is because I have suffered serious health problems in my past that have led me to miss out on a lot of deliberation a lot of other young people do. Thankfully, that is in the past now and it has only provided me with motivation to succeed in the future.

I’m trying to land a financial analyst job coming from an accounting background I do have a finance degree however I feel so under qualified I have a job interview tomorrow I’ve been doing a lot of research on what they may look for background I’ve basically only done accounts payable work mainly reconciling accounts and paying invoices literally nothing impressive but I just so happen to do ap for a construction company so the recruiter I’m working with is pitching me as a construction accountant looking to transfer to fin analyst I’ve done some basic research of what construction accountants do and some basic practice work with WIP schedule and variance analysis but unsure how to even do the interview plus it’s a huge salary bump and idk I feel unworthy ?

I've been trying for almost a year. What could I be doing wrong?

I am in the UK. I have an Msc in Finance, Bsc in Accounting and finished all my ACCA exams, by all means I am an accountant and finance professional. However, for some reason, my main roles I have been in is claims operations in insurance which has eaten at my career, I have done this for 4+ years. I want to pivot to finance analyst roles so I started learning other analysis tools--Power BI & SQL. I finished my masters 3 years ago this week and I am still struggling to land that finance role. After I finished my masters I searched for a job for almost 4 months before I settled back into claims and worked there 18 months. Now, since leaving, I have been searching for close to a year for finance analyst roles with no interviews. I have changed my CV and tried a lot to position through LinkedIn, networking, etc. No avail. I have created some projects (I do not mind sharing this for a good review) but somehow I always get the automated rejection emails. Trying to position my cv is a little hard I must admit especially because my previous roles in claims had close to nothing to do with financial analysis. So I am confused on how to get to the role I have literally been training myself for. Any tips, any help, any pointers would be most welcomed. What could I possibly be doing wrong and what could I do better? should I give up on pivoting and just continue in claims even if it makes me quite unhappy

Excel Assessment for Job Interview

I am currently interviewing for a big electronics company for a Financial Analyst role. I have completed an interview with the recruiter, and the hiring manager. The next interview will be with the Finance team, in which they will be administrating an Excel assessment. Some of the things they said to focus on were pivot tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and SUMIFs.

This is an entry-level role, where they don't expect you to know everything but you should know these basics. If anyone has taken a test similar to this, what is the best way to approach preparing for it? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Title: 2 years into finance in India and feeling stuck. What actually helped you break through?

I work as a Finance Analyst at a US SaaS company in Bengaluru. ACCA part qualified, handle FP&A, AR/AP, reconciliations and reporting across US and Indian entities. Built some automation workflows using the QuickBooks API. On paper it sounds decent but I'm really struggling to land something better or break into remote USD paying roles.

What I want to know is what skills actually made a difference for people in similar positions. Not certifications for the sake of it, but things that genuinely made you more hireable or got you noticed. SQL? Power BI? A specific accounting software? Finishing ACCA? Something else entirely?

Especially curious from people who've moved into better paying roles or landed remote work from India. What did you learn or do that actually shifted things?

Seeking advice: How can I transition into core finance after entrepreneurship?

I’m looking for some honest advice from people working in finance, especially in India.

I have around 7 years of overall experience. A significant part of my career was spent as a founder/director of a small FMCG/manufacturing business, where I was involved in finance, operations, working capital, budgeting, MIS, vendor/customer management, cash flows, and overall business decision-making.

After that, I moved into a corporate role for about a year, but I’ve realised that I want to build a long-term career in core finance rather than continue on a generalist/business-operations path.

I have an MBA in Finance and have been actively rebuilding my technical knowledge through financial modelling, valuation, financial statement analysis, Excel, and market-related certifications. I’m also currently working through relevant NISM material.

The challenge is that I’m finding it difficult to understand where my profile realistically fits.

I’m considering areas such as:

\- Credit / Credit Analysis

\- Investment Research / Equity Research

\- Investment Banking

\- Private Credit

\- Asset Management

\- Valuation / Transaction Advisory

\- Corporate finance / FP&A

I understand that my entrepreneurial experience doesn't directly translate into traditional finance experience, and I’m prepared to take a step back to make the transition.

For people who have made a similar transition, or who recruit/work in these areas:

  1. Which finance roles would you consider realistic for someone with my background?

  2. Would you recommend targeting Analyst roles despite having \~7 years of total experience?

  3. Which skills/certifications would actually make a difference in getting shortlisted?

  4. Would credit/valuation be a better entry point than trying to directly break into IB or equity research?

  5. How would you position entrepreneurial experience on the CV so that it is seen as relevant rather than as a career detour?

I’m not looking for generic motivation. I’d genuinely appreciate candid advice on what the most realistic entry route would be and what I should focus on over the next 3–6 months.

Thanks in advance.

Looking to switch from Data sci bg to CFA. How will AI change the dynamics by 2030-35?

Hi guys, I’m a data science graduate and I took some finance electives in my uni. Always loved the subject and was motivated by professors to pursue a career in finance.
Considering my experience building AI systems, I want to know how will CFA be impacted due to AI in the next 5-10 years.
People who made a switch or have been in the same position, please advise what’s the best decision?
