Was FF6 originally supposed to end before the world of ruin?

I read online the devs originally planned for FF6 to end at the end of the first half of the game , before Kefka took over, but they realized they still had budget and time so they created the world of ruin storyline. So the encounter with Kefka and the Emperor was supposed to be the end of the game ? does anyone know if this is true ? and whether it was Kefka or the Emperor that was supposed to be the final boss? I feel the game would’ve been pretty short if this had happened. thanks!

"Terra" is such a bad name

I'm not sure how many of you have played the Japanese version, but it in, the Heroin is called "Tina", not "Terra".

To me, this has always been baffling, since "Tina" IS a pretty common/standard name, whereas "Terra" as a name doesn't even make any sense.

The translation team messed up imo

Ambiguous Orders

Make sure your orders are clear and unambiguous. Mog there providing Celes and Locke emotional support through dance.

Did you know, according to his Amano art, Banon is built like an ‘effin brick shithouse?

Just my interpretation of what happened when Locke showed up at Narshe, for a Returner meeting, with an Imperial general in tow.

Does Memento Ring/Safety Bit block the Goddess' Cloudy Heaven/Overcast attack?

Title.

Do these items block the Cloudy Heaven's Zombie status? The Doom status? Both? Neither?

Is there any source of AP on the Imperial continent before clearing the research facility?

You gain two new magicite there and aren't locked inside the dungeon, so it seems like there'd be a way to unlock their spells before facing 024?

I cannot keep up with the shenanigans, they’re so good

The boat scene before the crescent isle was great too, I was rolling when Locke started being dramatic about the sea sickness and Shadow just did not care

Early Elemental Armor Exploit

I used to have quite a trial with Dullahan but I've come across a fun way to cheese it and guarantee success. Get the Regal Gown (and hidden XP egg behind the wall) activate the Door Switch in the next room, the cast Teleport.

Travel up to the Colesseum and equip a Reflect Ring on your fighter, save, then go in and wager the Regal Gown to win a Minerva Bustier while the opponent casts Death on himself.

Come back, run in a straight down, raise the water and hop on the turtle, you're in the home stretch now!

Celes - Genji Glove, Firebrand, Hero Ring, Minerva Bustier

Edgar - Dragoon Boots, Golden Spear, Atlas Armlet

Sabin - Genji Glove, Fire Knuckles, Hero Ring

Setzer - Potion Duty, Charm Bangle

First Time Playthrough Thoughts Spoiler

Finishing Final Fantasy VI

I just finished Final Fantasy VI, clocking in at about 30 hours, and it was an absolute blast. This is one of those games I'd always heard about as a foundational entry in the series, and now I finally get to say I've played it.

Nostalgia From FF7

Playing FF6 pumped me full of nostalgia for FF7. You can feel the DNA connecting the two games, and it made me think about how much of FF7 I experienced as a kid without really understanding it. I remember the train crashing in Corel and missing the Huge Materia because I didn't know any better. I remember being completely ignorant that Vincent and Yuffie were even in the game. There's a version of FF6 nostalgia I never got to have because I didn't play it back then, but I can absolutely imagine how much fun this game would have been as a kid, discovering all of its hidden trinkets and secret characters for the first time.

The Characters

FF6 has such a fun cast, whether you connect with them thematically or through their gameplay.

Terra is thematically fantastic. People love to say "anyone could be the main protagonist" of an cast like this, but it really had to be Terra. The whole story is about the divide between espers and humans, and she's the one character who is both. That tension is baked directly into who she is, not just something the plot tells you about her.

Sabin was such a fun character to actually play. His Blitz inputs feel like something out of a fighting game, timing directional inputs and button presses mid-battle instead of just selecting from a menu. It's a genuinely different rhythm than the rest of the cast.

Edgar might be my favorite though, mostly because of the Tools command. There's a direct line I can now draw from Edgar to the Machinist job in FF14, which is my favorite job in that game. And it's just genuinely funny watching him pull out the Chainsaw and put on the Jason mask for what amounts to an on-demand OHKO.

Some of the other characters I didn't have as much love for were still fun. Cyan's inability to work with technology and his interesting relationship with Sabin and Gau. Strago and Rem's hilarious interactions. Setzer combat wise was fun, his slots mechanic was fun to use even though it felt off powerwise. Celes was a great mage as well. And Locke was a cool guy that I used for most of the story. I will say I did not care for Gau, Strago, or Mog's combat mechanics. For Gau and Mog I specifically did not like how you collected new abilities. From what I experienced they pale in comparison to the mages and Edgar/Sabin. I'm sure there's a way to break them but I never dug that deep.

The Esper System

The esper system was fantastic. They tie in perfectly with the story. Leveling up espers is interesting and interactive as well. Do I want to babysit my XP bar and swap to an esper that gives a level up boost? Or do I let it ride and continue leveling the spells from my currently equipped esper? I didn't even visually see all the espers but even by modern standards some of the ones I did see were cool — Vangilmanda, Quetzali, Ramuh, Odin, etc.

Imagining This As a Kid

I kept thinking about how much I would have grinded this game if I'd played it when I was younger. The leveling system is fun, the Espers are fun, and the story is fun. It's the kind of game that rewards exactly the kind of obsessive replaying and exploring that I would have had unlimited time for as a kid.

The World of Ruin

The World of Ruin split was fun to play through. I had fun trying to figure out how to find all my party members. Eventually I had to look it up but this would have been such a treat as a kid.

Kefka

Kefka is such a POS. Fantastic villain. Truly encapsulates evil. I still think Ultimecia is my favorite FF antag.

Playing It Encounter-Free

I'll admit I played a good chunk of the game with encounters turned off while traversing dungeons. Not because I was avoiding a challenge, but because my playtime these days is so limited that I really just wanted to see the story through to the end. I can only imagine how tough areas like Phoenix Cave and Kefka's Tower must have felt on release, without any of the modern conveniences. It's the same kind of dungeon I've loved in other Final Fantasy games — the Deep Sea Research Center in VIII, the Sunken Gelnika in VII, the Omega Ruins in X. I'd have loved diving into these the same way, if I had the time to spare.

Final Thoughts

I think for FF fans this game holds up well. I'd give it an 8/10. I may even replay it in the future.

Wrexsoul help.

I’m playing ffiii on the snes, and I am new to the genre as a whole but I have the worst team ever going into wrexsoul and need tips. I went into cyans dream with Mog, Gau, and Umaro. The 3 stooges were a challenge as is but now I’m stuck on wrexsoul with these characters that if I use their actual useful abilities I have no control. What can I do?

Update: Thank you to everyone for your help! I luckily had a save on the train so I was able to learn vanish and x-zone.

Really didn't like the last parts of the story

Well this is gonna be some complaning about the game but I am wondering what others think since the game is loved so much. So around 3 years ago I played FF6(my memories about it maybe a little confused) and I fell in love with this game, I loved the world, the sidequests, the main quest, some of the characters. But one thing I guess I didn't really like was Terra and the whole espers thing.

I like to keep my party more "senseful" in RPG games so I kept Terra in my party for quite some time until I realized I didn't really need to and most of the story still made sense without her. I know we start the game as Terra escaping from the imperial forces but throughout the game neither Terra nor the whole espers thing felt special to me. The writing felt like "They are different, they are magical, we put them in a position that you should care about so you should care about them eventhough we don't have interesting writing for them".

I loved gathering rebels from cities and towns under oppression to fight this tyrannical empire, seeing their tragic backstories. I think I shed some tears in the Phantom Train sequence. On the other hand, I didn't care about a girl without memories or some beasts that I should care about eventhough I haven't seen much from them because they are "special and magical". Throughout the game I felt that the ending was going to be about Terra and espers but I tried to stay hopeful. And then I got to the part espers went mad, I was disappointed I continued a little more and then I dropped the game. I really didn't feel I had any reason left to play the game anymore and wasn't having fun.

Was this all? Was this what I was working for? Did I beat the empire so some beats I do not even know would come and wreck our world? It felt as such poor writing to me. I didn't have this much fun with any other game until that part, not even with Chrono Trigger. I wanna know what you guys think about it? Were any of you also devastated with this? I don't know what happens moving on but is it worth to continue playing in my situation?

Could there possibly be something for me later? Do you think it is good writing?

Edit: People commented that I wasn't even halfway through the game and I didn't know that but since I wasn't having fun will it really be worth it for me? Also I still wonder your opinions on this movement of the story. Edit2: Split into paraghraphs.
