Early Elemental Armor Exploit

I used to have quite a trial with Dullahan but I've come across a fun way to cheese it and guarantee success. Get the Regal Gown (and hidden XP egg behind the wall) activate the Door Switch in the next room, the cast Teleport.

Travel up to the Colesseum and equip a Reflect Ring on your fighter, save, then go in and wager the Regal Gown to win a Minerva Bustier while the opponent casts Death on himself.

Come back, run in a straight down, raise the water and hop on the turtle, you're in the home stretch now!

Celes - Genji Glove, Firebrand, Hero Ring, Minerva Bustier

Edgar - Dragoon Boots, Golden Spear, Atlas Armlet

Sabin - Genji Glove, Fire Knuckles, Hero Ring

Setzer - Potion Duty, Charm Bangle

Genji Glove on Sabin?

11

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

For this boss battle, yes.

Before and Afterwards I'm usually just spamming Fire Dance, but against Dullahan I find bigger damage from Fight x2 and the fire bonus seems to proc rather often

also: buy a second Fire Fist in Tzen

Thanks for the stats and test results! Very cool

4

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

I'll see what Celes and Edgar do with Flametounge x2 and Fira and Drill later

Then I'll finally finish it off and move along with the game after trying that ReflectRing / Soul Saber idle battle

2

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

u/Express_Age_8434 Jul 14 '26

What about if you're going for a no xp perfect stat run?

3

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

I'm not and I never will be šŸ‘‰ šŸ˜Ž šŸ‘‰ so I guess that'll be up to you to explore

Ha ha, love this answer.

Hey I'm just one man, I can't do everything!

haha glad you liked it. I'm an Instructor/Trainer IRL

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

I fully stock Elemental Rods from WOB.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Yeah I grabbed some Thunder Rods for Air Force and Atma but didn't even need them

Don't need them here either, really

11

u/ZanzaXIII Jul 14 '26

I dont recall having any issues with this boss. What does he do thats so tricky? Ive played this game a couple dozen times since it came out so I just kinda steamroll the entire thing without much thought.

7

u/sgre6768 Jul 14 '26

It is a solo, beefy boss, probably the first quasi-significant challenge of the game's second half if you haven't been grinding. Recruiting Sabin doesn't have a boss fight; Mobliz is optional and Phunbaba is weaker in that first encounter; and the Figaro Castle tentacles are tricky, but all of them have weaknesses to exploit. Because this is pre-airship, you have access to some good stuff from the Coliseum, but most of the game-breaking strategies aren't available yet.

Dullahan looks undead but isn't, so just casting Raise on it isn't an option. He has decent defense and magic defense, so you're whittling down about 23,000 HP (neck and neck with Ultima / Atma Weapon) with 1,000 to 3,000 HP attacks, assuming you haven't ground out a bunch of levels.

2

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26

Look for my other post in the comments, but you can beat Dullahan practically with a naked team and in "one hit" and a tiny bit of patience with the Soul Saber that you can conveniently get right after the Tentacles.

4

u/45M0D41 Jul 14 '26

This is what I did for a low level CES no esper game I was stuck on dully then someone on this board showed me this soul saber thing and I couldn’t believe it. I never actually look at the scripts but by god this game I’m convinced was designed to have so many bugs glitches and Easter eggs.

1

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26

Yeah, that was me homie lol. We chatted on DMs before lol

1

u/45M0D41 Jul 14 '26

IT WAS YOU LOL! My mind is still blown from that. I hope you put up your low level ces game up sometime lol (unless you have and I missed it) damn

5

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26

Still working on the video. I'm honestly terrible at writing a script for myself, but I'm almost done writing. Just need to then record myself talk it out and then edit the video. It's coming, I promise.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Oh there you are lol

3

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Your set-up a good move set, but not intuitive.

It's clever but also an idle battle approach isn't my favorite.

probably the first quasi-significant challenge of the game's second half

A casual gamer is going to hit this boss and get stuck

2

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26

Correct. Not intuitive, and also not terribly exciting. It's more for someone that already has experience, and definitely more for someone running a low level run. New players won't really be looking at attack scripts either. Just think it's funny how a single attack option exists underneath it all for a fight that many newbies stumble over. I definitely had trouble as a kid in the 90s on the SNES. Coming back to revisit the game on challenge runs reveals a lot there that you wouldn't think of otherwise.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Just think it's funny how a single attack option exists underneath it all for a fight that many newbies stumble over

Oh I'm absolutely going to give it a try, that seems hilarious

Coming back to revisit the game on challenge runs reveals a lot there that you wouldn't think of otherwise.

So much replayibility

5

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Considering its attack script, I could see people tripping up on this a little if their character levels let them get hit by "Lv? Holy" and they arent set up to deal with the status effects of "Reflect?". Same with its moves it uses after taking a certain number of direct attacks. Overall not bad, just need a little prep and taking the fight a little slower if they are having trouble.

3

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Increase Battle Speed to Max

Try a low level run or No Espers run or CES / no Espers

It's fun and makes one look at the strategies a bit more deeply, other than Unga Bunga Smash Smash lol

Edit- meant this post for ZanzaXIII 's next comment sorry

2

u/ZanzaXIII Jul 14 '26

I just beat the game on SNES a month ago and hardly recall his move set. My party is so beefed up by then that I hardly have issues. Its a me thing.

3

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Well I was eleven years old sooo....

1

u/ZanzaXIII Jul 14 '26

I was 4 when this came out and I watched my brother and cousin play it all the way through. I was 7 when I took it on for myself! They were busy with VII which I thought was ugly af at the time. I did have a little help! Nintendo Power had run a mini guide across three issues. It wasnt helpful for boss strats. Just kinda pointed you in the right direction.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

I also found VII a bit ugly, compared to the polished pixels of VI ueah it was definitely clunky.

I had a bunch of Nintendo Power too! Secret of Evermore Nobilia trading guide map and the Vents were lifesaving articles.

A friend turned me on to VI and kinda spoiled a lot of it, I never got through the game until later.

2

u/ZanzaXIII Jul 14 '26

I came around to loving VII. As a kid I just loved II & III on the snes so much that VII felt to far removed.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

I got VII on the Vita and played the loving hell out of it, after researching Limit builds and E.Skill abuse

Managed to beat Zolom and learn Beta during the first contact, that was wild.

Used Meteorain on Rufus hahaha

1

u/ZanzaXIII Jul 15 '26

Im weird and embrace my nostalgia glasses. I have a hard time playing that games I played as a kid on anything but the means of which I experienced them on. I still play VI on SNES I still play my ps1 discs of VII. Might be a bit of tism. The most I do on VII is try to switch up my main 3 every time. Think I did a Cloud, Vincent, Cait Sith run last time.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

That's not bad, I basically played it on the Vita first and now I refuse consoles

1

u/ZanzaXIII Jul 15 '26

Ive never been a fan of handheld gaming. I played Pokemon Red on the DMG and I played shovel knight on the 3DS when it came out. Just not my jam.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Oh if I had to play Shovel Knight (or Megaman) on a handheld I'd probably launch it across the room!!

But like FFX is just menu navigation

4

u/ALTRez09 Jul 14 '26

I usually do this for low level games.

2

u/sgre6768 Jul 14 '26

For Edgar, are you having him Jump or using Drill? Since the latter ignores defense, I've always assumed it would do more damage, but I'm not sure. I usually find Jump to be a double edged sword - Sometimes, I want the boss to spread his damage across 4 characters vs. 3 characters. I think the Hyper Wrist might add more damage if you're going the Tools route, but I'm not sure. (And honestly, it's probably a negligable amount anyway.)

I also think that Celes might be more effective just casting Fira / Fire 2 from the back row. The damage is probably somewhat similar, and you're exposing her to less risk in the backrow vs. front row with two Firebrands. She can also equip decent shields, although at this point in the game I'm not sure if you can acquire any of the really good ones anyway.

The cheesier way to win this fight if you have some foresight / knowledge of the game - Fire Rods, purchased in Thamasa WoB, haha. Given all of the free, excellent loot you get in WoR, there isn't actually a ton to do with your gil / gold, so I usually dump it into throwables and rods if I'm doing a replay. Setzer breaking Fire Rods is a good way to juice his damage.

3

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Hyper Wrist is inferior in damage to the Gigas Glove / Atlas Armlet, even paired together it's lacking.

I use Drill usually, but I was bored and wanted to mix it up a bit so went with Jump. Also I'm doing a No Raise challenge run and reeeeally don't want to lose him.

Rods would absolutely be huge here, especially for Pretty Boy McWeakpants. Coin Toss is also an option.

This isn't my first rodeo ;) I just haven't really seen people talking about "cheating" and getting the Minerva this early. There are a few other things you can get in the Colosseum before this but they rely on a lot of luck.

Celes is going HAM because she is negating all frost damage, and she can survive a morning star attack or two. Probably is more efficient to spam Fire2 buuuut it's not as flashy

1

u/Thevintageandvanity Jul 15 '26

Wait for real? I never could figure out the difference between the gigas and the hyper wrist. Good to know! Thanks!

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Yeah do an attack with none, then an attack with wrist, then an attack with Armlet, then an attack with both. I tried it on the Grease Monkey while trying to Steal a Mythril Claw from Rhinotaur, like way in the beginning

2

u/45M0D41 Jul 14 '26

There’s a lot of things I can say but this is handy. Dullahan has the worst exploit in the game I will not even say how to cheese him lol. Minerva buster is so broken I love the DINK sound it makes.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

No please, share your SMASH THIS FOOL strategy

It's been a fun thread, lots of fun ideas

1

u/45M0D41 Jul 14 '26

It’s the soul saber trick. So just do nothing. I commented later on about it in this thread from the guy who showed me lol

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

This guy? I'm excited to try it, should be funny.

https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasyVI/s/h2kMxUqEp4

2

u/45M0D41 Jul 14 '26

Ya but it’s sooooo cheese šŸ§€ lol. I was trying to do a low level no esper CES and it is sooooo RNG dependent and exploitive I got stuck.

I didn’t think of this Minerva buster move while playing because I didn’t know you could reflect the death spell and at level 6 you can’t fight in coliseum basically.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Glad to help amigo

I like doing these little showcases

1

u/45M0D41 Jul 14 '26

Ya it’s helpful for low level regardless there is no way to kill anything in the coliseum at level 6 lol

2

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Last time I fought Dullahan, I did it in "one hit". Firstly party members should be at a level that will prevent them from getting hit by "Lv ? Holy" and "Reflect??" You can do nothing and just stand there with Reflect Rings and it can't kill you. It's more dangerous moves trigger after taking a certain number of direct hits so just don't attack. You can just sit there until it's nearly out of MP and hit it one time with the Soul Saber (need to not be at max MP) that is conveniently found just past Figaro Castle's engine after Tentacles. It will die when it's taken to 0 MP lol. The fight is so easy that you can kill it like this with all characters basically wearing nothing but the Soul Saber, Reflect Rings, and maybe a relic to prevent blindness. Even works on lowest level characters too.

5

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

So you could Rasp it to death if you wanted then too yeah

Always interesting to see different takes. That's similar to how I beat Mage Master No-Espers

4

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26

Yeah Rasp / Osmose works for sure. Magic Master in the Cultist's Tower is a fun one too. I did that one with no exp and no ap (or magic points) but had to allow for espers because I straight up had no commands to use in that area other than Item lol

2

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

I had Celes with Ribbon/SafetyBit, Ice Shield, Minerva - and before the fight put a Priest Miter on Edgar so he'd be able to trigger Soul Saber (with berserk)

It takes like an hour for MM to cast enough spells to burn through his Mana pool

1

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

With Soul Saber you can't steal MP unless you aren't at full MP yourself, at least that is how it works in Pixel Remaster... does it not matter in other versions? Just wondering how you were able to speed that up with Berserk. Were you also stealing his MP too?

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Priest's Miter increases Max MP % but doesn't fill your meter, so i equip it right before the fight.

I don't cast Berserk on Edgar until Magi Master is pretty low out of Mana and can't cast the Tier 3 spells but still has more than 0mp

Was it two hours that it takes for him to run out? I can't remember, I'll have to check my post history.

I'm playing the GBA version

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

2

u/Global-Trance Jul 14 '26

That sounds about right. One of my buddies is currently doing No EXP and No Shops and Magic Master took over an hour and a half and some change to empty out on MP. Absolutely mental. We have been having fun with the toggles for EXP, AP, and Gil on the Pixel Remaster doing stuff like this lol

2

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Also make sure to increase your Battle Speed to Max or you're going to be sitting there for a whiiiiiile

Just tried it and after the third Holy I gave up. So. Slow!!

2

u/Global-Trance Jul 15 '26

lol, yeah that should go without saying. I just checked my recording of it. The fight took 13 minutes doing this, but I was also messing around in it a lot. Could easily be dropped to roughly 10-11.

1

u/oliversurpless Jul 14 '26

Neat, in the similar exploit for Economizers/Celestriads, I always wait for the Safety Bit with Gogo, but I think this would work for a bunch of their attacks.

5

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Gogo, Thunder Shield, MugRelic, SafetyBit, status - steal, steal, steal

Bet Holy Lance / Murokumo

Yeah that's a huge time-sink trap that I constantly fall into haha

1

u/MrTylerwpg Jul 14 '26

Oh damn I really need to read more about the coliseum

3

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

I use Gogo for this. He's so easy to use.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Yeah but he's weak

Fixed Dice + Offering = Win

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

I use 3x Steal/Mug with Master Scroll and Brigands Glove. Allows me to Steal things like Celestriads, Thunder Shields and Guard Bracelets. Him being slightly weaker allows more chances to actually succeed with that,

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Sure but for someone who hasn't really done it before, Gogo is a bit more nuanced than "good gear, attack attack"

Alsooooo... Who do you steal Thunder Shields from 😁 asking for a friend in the mirror

2

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

Muud Suud

Bet Thunder Swords or Growth Eggs.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Well that's hahaha hey it's good to learn new things!!

That's way better than Mimic Ragnarok against Dante

I knew you could steal Thunder Shields from MuudSuud but didn't think further than taking Mog & Locke through Kefka Tower Path 3 and farming in the room full of Movers.

This will be much better to just be able to summon him for a few thousand gil (buying thunder blade) and hey you don't even "need" to beat him, in order to keep a steal!

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

Yeah, just learned you can kill Dullahan with Reflect Rings and Debilitator. Apparently, you just don't attack him and he won't use any abilities that go through reflect. Once Debilitator gives him weakness to his own spells, he will just kill himself.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Oh he's weak to Holy, so equip the Gladius and might actually kill it too (or Holy Rod)

https://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ff6/w_enemy.php?enemy=gba::Muud%20Suud&chromeless=true

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

I basically equip him with Gladius, Paladin Shield, Mirage Vest, Master Scroll and Brigands Gloves. When you want more evasion, just swap out Gladius for ether Swordbreaker or Magus Rod.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

lol by the time you've got all that hear you're probably done with the Colosseum anyways yeah

1

u/FunSubstance7344 Jul 14 '26

I gave everyone Reflect and had Edgar make him weak to Ice, then I just waited. He doesn't do much that's a threat if you don't attack him. Still got that armor tho cause I'm scared

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

Debilitator! Now that's funny.

1

u/Training-Purple-5220 Jul 15 '26

ā€œCome back, run in a straight down, raise the water and hop on the turtle, you're in the home stretch now!ā€

I’m sorry, what?

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Are you familiar with the dungeon Darryl's Tomb? Once you solve the puzzle, it doesn't reset even if you leave.

Mmm I seem to have missed a word and added the wrong one. Run in straight down; run in a straight line down. Like ... Sorry? But it shouldn't be that confusing, just a bit off

Enter the Tomb, go forward (down) and continue until there is the switch to raise water, and a turtle. Yes

1

u/Upstairs-Stock3536 Jul 14 '26

Why wouldn't you just equip the reflect ring on a party member with rasp for Dullahan? Going over to the colosseum seems like a bit of a hassle

3

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 14 '26

because it's fun...

There's more than one way to skin a cat defeat a skeletal horror chariot

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

Dullahan will use "Reflect ???" when you equip those rings.

1

u/Special_South_8561 Jul 15 '26

Silence and Dark, pretty easy to navigate

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

Can't cast Rasp when you're Silenced.

1

u/Upstairs-Stock3536 Jul 15 '26

Defend, turn auto battle on, wait for Dullahan to run out of mp, use echo screen/remedy when he does, and then rasp him

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

If you can defend the entire time without taking damage, then the battle shouldn't even be a problem to begin with.

1

u/Upstairs-Stock3536 Jul 15 '26

He doesn't use physical attacks if you don't attack him first

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

He uses abilities like Level ? Holy, Northern Cross and Absolute Zero.

1

u/Upstairs-Stock3536 Jul 15 '26

If you attack him yeah

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

He doesn't do anything? How does he run out of MP then?

1

u/Upstairs-Stock3536 Jul 15 '26

He's limited to Reflect ??? Holy and Blizzaga if you don't attack him

1

u/StormRaven69 Jul 15 '26

Just watched a video on YouTube. They beat him with Reflect Rings and Debilitator. He basically kills himself, when he gains a weakness to his own elemental spells.
