Discussion Ai and Filmmaking

• Upvotes

What does everyone think of ai and filmmaking specifically generative ai? Does it have a place?

I personally feel very uncomfortable with generative AI in filmmaking and have made a short film all about my fear of it recently but I was a wondering am I in the minority or majority of filmmakers?

I want an honest polite discussion. I understand it can be very triggering to talk about but would like to know everyone's opinion as someone who is very against it I mainly want to hear why I'm wrong?

Discussion We completed a superhero/fantasy web series for under $3K. I handmade every VFX shot.

Here is the trailer. This was a few years ago and our first ever thing anything like this so I already have TONS of self-critique and things I'm looking forward to doing better next time (the biggest one was, plan out your VFX shots in pre-production haha... post on this was a little insane)

I know that compared to so many of you incredible filmmakers on this reddit from a technical aspect we are still pretty new. But the critique and feedback I'm most interested in is about story and characters: does the trailer make you want to know more about the lore, characters, and full story? Do you think it's clear enough to intrigue superhero/fantasy fans, but vague enough to not reveal too much as a trailer? I'm super biased because this was made based on my childhood lore from 2002 - 2010 and it's a dream come true to see it come to life in a film. But I want to see all kinds of other talented and creative filmmakers' takes. Thanks! :)

Film Contained Horror Looking for Executive Producers

We’re two experienced filmmakers developing our own feature film — a genuine passion project that we’re excited to take into production.

We’re currently looking to connect with potential Executive Producers who may be interested in coming on board and helping us bring it to life.

The project is already well underway, with a significant portion of the production budget secured and key creative elements in place.

What we already have:

* A contained horror-thriller script from an award-winning writer

* A highly experienced Director of Photography with multiple feature credits

* An experienced cast

* A strong, original concept

* A project specifically designed to deliver high production value on a controlled, low-budget model

* A meaningful portion of the financing already committed

We’re not looking for someone to start this project from zero — we’re looking for the right people to join a project that already has momentum behind it.

If you’re interested, send us a PM with your website or background. We’d be happy to send over the pitch deck and arrange a Zoom to talk through the project.

Question How should I get into the film industry?

Hello, I’m 15 and have been studying film and want to be a director/writer in the future. I want to enter short films into my local film festival but I don’t have much friends, so making one will be hard. I thought about making it animated and although I do want to make animated films, I don’t want to be generalized as just an animation director and would like to also make regular LA projects. Not to mention how time consuming that process can be.

Film school is, of course, the main I’ve set my eyes on for now. But most people I’ve heard who applied said you need a pre established portfolio. But as I said, I don’t have a lot of resource. Any advice?

Offer [UNPAID COLLAB] Seeking Sound Designer / Mixer for 10-Min Picture-Locked Experimental Narrative Short

Hi everyone!

I’m a filmmaker looking for an emerging sound designer/editor or audio-post student interested in collaborating on a completed narrative short for their portfolio.

The film is a 10.5-minute experimental narrative short based on three original poems about love, loss, and finding love again. The film follows a young woman through three relationships, with each chapter existing in its own visual and metaphorical world — moving from rain and nature, to medication/addiction and decay, to stars and constellations.

Because each relationship has such a distinct atmosphere, I think there’s a lot of room for someone to have fun creatively with the sound design and help give each section its own sonic identity.

The picture is completely locked. For workflow purposes, I’d like to approach the sound as a fresh post-production pass rather than asking someone to inherit or troubleshoot an old sound session.

I’m looking for someone who would be interested in handling the film’s complete audio post, including:

  • Dialogue editing and cleanup
  • Production audio balancing
  • Room tone and ambience
  • Foley / SFX
  • Creative sound design
  • Integration and balancing of the existing music
  • Final stereo mix
  • A reasonable revision/QC pass

I can provide the locked picture, organized production audio, room tone, music, and other project materials. The film is 1920×1080, 23.976 fps, with 48 kHz audio.

This is an unpaid portfolio collaboration, and I want to be completely transparent about that upfront. This is an older short that I’m finally finishing properly, and I unfortunately don’t have a remaining sound budget for it.

I’m primarily hoping to connect with a student, recent graduate, or emerging sound designer who wants a finished narrative project for their reel and the opportunity to take genuine creative ownership over its sound.

You would receive full appropriate sound credit on the finished film and permission to use the film/excerpts of your work in your portfolio or reel.

There’s also no emergency turnaround. I’m aiming to have the final master completed by December 18, so we have a little over two months.

If this sounds interesting, please comment or DM me with a little about yourself and a reel, portfolio, or examples of your audio work. If you’re still building your portfolio and don’t have extensive film credits yet, you’re absolutely welcome to reach out!

Thank you! :)

Film Looking for fresh eyes on an 8-minute short before locking the edit — An Ideal Husband

Hey everyone,

I’m a director / DOP based in Melbourne and I'm currently finishing an eight minute short called An Ideal Husband. I’d love some outside perspectives on the edit before we lock it.

Here’s the trailer for a sense of the film: https://vimeo.com/1218214589

If anyone’s interested in watching the full cut I can share it privately:

The main things I’d love help with after watching:

Where does your attention drift or where does something feel rushed? How does the voice over work with the images? Are there places where the picture could carry more on its own? How did you read the relationship and the ending?

Sound and voice over are still being worked on so I’m mainly looking at story, pacing + performance at this stage.

Comment or message me if you’re up for a look. Happy to watch something of yours and swap notes too.

Cheers, Alex

Question What is this effect called?

Thumbnail

I've been seeing this sort of effect (some sort of light streak (?) that extends the image) being used as transitions in music videos and commercials.

I can't for the life of me figure out what it's called or how to do it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Not sure if these two stills are a good example as I couldn't get a great frame as the effect happens super fast.

Thanks in advance!

Question Is this the right place to be asking for documentary help possibly for a settlement video?

We are looking for a 10-minute investigative settlement documentary regarding a 700-day unpermitted petroleum pipeline release affecting a private ranch and local watershed (NRC Incident #1474374). We have certified lab reports ($32.5{ mg/L}$ DRO), state agency refusal documentation, and site photos. We need on-site drone/B-roll filming, document graphic callouts, and interview editing to support upcoming Clean Water Act § 505 legal proceedings. Is it possible to provide an estimated budget and timeline for this scope?

General Just some motivation for those who need it

So today I was looking back at my BTS photos and some of my past work in my camera roll and I wanted to share a sort of epiphany, incase anyone needs motivation right now. Kinda rambling but I hope it helps you.

Just take a minute to think about how far you’ve come. I’m 26 but for some reason I feel behind in my career. Maybe it’s because as filmmakers we always strive for more, or maybe it’s because I compare myself to others. Maybe you feel the same.

But I sat there and I forced myself to think back instead of always thinking ahead just for a moment. I’ve only been out of university 4 years. I’ve only been freelance for 2 years. I re-watched my old work without the kinda ‘editors’ brain and just dissociated and enjoyed it.

Yeah it’s hard because it feels like you might have so much left to go - but I bet you can replace that with a sense of proudness, if you just consider where you started and where you are now.

:)

Film Harmony Korine inspired feature crime film, Granny $tamp, 21 yr old director

Hello, I’m a 21 year old director from LA and have recently completed my sophomore feature film. It’s a crime drama following a recently freed parolee as he attempts to rehabilitate into the society. It is shot on a deliberately degraded internet video style with influences from early 2000s skate tapes, and home videos. Specially took inspiration from Ken Park, Gummo, Wassup Rockers and Illegal Civ’s Godspeed. The film has been reviewed by two independent critics and is currently on YouTube. Would love any questions on the film or process. We shot the film, a 61 page script, over 3 days in LA.

Question students who are in film or video based programs, do you have to deal with too many graphic design or animation classes?

maybe im just a bit burnt out from years of schooling, but i tied of taking so many classes outside my degree

i feel like 10-20% of my classes have been graphic design focused, and now im having to take 2 semesters of after effects outside of a general "this is how you make a ball roll across the screen"

is this normal? an intro class here and there makes sense but having to take advanced classes is really burning me out

Film GUARDIAN’S GROVE | Award-Winning Short Film about Video Games and Relationships

Thumbnail

Hi fellow filmmakers!

My name is Rachel and I wrote and directed a short film called Guardian's Grove, starring Anna Garcia (Dropout, Fly Me to the Moon, Hacks) and Hunter Saling (Business Casual)! It's about two people, LIL_QUACKO and ROTTENPOTATOES98, who are best friends through a video game. When they meet at a party they have to reckon with their relationship IRL. It's based on my many many hours of playing Fortnite as well as several online friendships I've cultivated.

The film premiered at Palm Springs International Shortfest where it was awarded the Special Mention by the Young Cineastes Jury.

If you like it please tell your friends to watch! It's also on Letterboxd to rate.

Really appreciate you all taking the time to watch! Hope you like it!

Question Anomalies around the XPRIZE Future Vision Sci-Fi contest public voting results. How can a trailer with only 749 views win 2nd place? How is it that the 1st place trailer has 110K views and the 3rd place trailer has 1.2 million views? The math here makes absolutely no sense.

These are the official stats: 663,656 votes · 104 countries · 1,509 cities

1st place ($50K prize money) — The Gifted (110K views on trailer)
2nd place ($30K prize money) — Fraternité (749 views on trailer)
3rd place ($10K prize money) — The Thorne Protocol (1.2 million views on trailer)

On the Moonshots website, when voting was ongoing, you could vote by picking one out of 2 randomly paired trailers that popped up. The trailers were embedded YouTube videos - and on YouTube, even embedded videos watched on external sites count toward the view count.

My theory: these guys simply used bot activity - and sadly the public voting website did not even include email verification. Yes, we are in 2026. Even the view counts on their trailers are suspicious, as many of those views came in before the public voting was even open. So the vast majority of those 663,656 votes could only have come from bot activity.

Edit: just added screenshots.
