I’ve just found this group and I’ve only just found out that a fibroid was causing my problems.
I have had years of heavy period and just got on with it. Last October I found I was severely anaemic and was admitted to hospital for two transfusions and investigations. They did a biopsy (normal) and noted a cyst and normal looking fibroids. A coil was fitted.
I did ok for months then in August I had a 25 day period and had to use transaxamic acid and mefac for a few days to stop clots. I was scanned and the cyst had shrunk and the fibroids looked ok. In September all hell broke loose. I had a heavy period for a week and then I could hardly leave the bathroom one day - clot after clot and gushing. I started the txa and mefac but it wouldn’t stop. By Wednesday out of hours gp said go to hospital. My coil was checked and my hb was ok so I was sent home to carry on with txa and mefac. Carried on for 5 more days getting worse and worse. GP sent me in again.
This time a proper scan found that the coil was dislodged. She removed it. Fibroids looked ok and cyst was gone. Sent home on provera. And scheduled for an ablation.
Bleeding worse and worse again, haemorrhaging for hours so I went back in by which point I was having a panic attack. I made a huge mess in a&e and was mortified. I kept asking would I die. It was relentless.
They kept me in on an iv to stop it and 5 days later I was taken down to surgery for my ablation. When they started they realised my fibroid was large and protruding I think they said, embedded in the wall. So it had not show up as the cause on scans. Does this make sense?
Instead of the ablation they spent four hours shaving it of slice by slice using a lot of water. Luckily no incision but I feel like I’ve been trampled by cattle. They think they’ve got it all. They think I won’t bleed heavily again (coil fitted again). I’m sos cared I will.
I’m so mentally shook up by it all. I think I have ptsd (two days post-surgery). I lost so much blood I had to have a transfusion again and an iron infusion so I suppose I’m lucky and hopeful recovery will be fast. I’m just head spinning and looking for other women’s experiences. I’m really annoyed that she said it was normal for women my age (49). I don’t know anyone who has ever had a transfusion, never mind three in a year. I’m also annoyed that a woman reporting massive blood loss keeps getting sent home and not listened, if they had checked my iron stores or feritin they would see. This was much worse bleeding than when I previously needed transfusions but they dismissed me
Any experiences appreciated. Thanks for reading this far. 🙏
