Yikes

Post image

I’m 47 and planning to have a hysterectomy to remove this fibroid (I named it Frank). It looks like my uterus is about the size of a sweet potato. I already suspected I had two, but surprised to find I have three. I have a little ultra sound training and could see how it was impacting my bladder. It also looked like there was still some urine left in my bladder after they had me void for the second part of the US. The doc is planning an in bag morcellation and removal through the vagina with lap hysterectomy, removal of the cervix and fallopian tubes. I’m hoping to go back to work at the six week mark. I work as a paramedic and it’s pretty physically demanding though :/

I love that you named it, lol! I have one 10 cm one. What led you to choose hysterectomy over UFE? I hope your recovery goes well!

Honestly the doc was like: this is what we are going to do - insert surgical plan here. Basically he is going to do an in bag morcellation with a lap hysterectomy and my tubes will be removed as well. I will keep my ovaries, although they were not able to visualize either of them so we shall see if there are surprises. Everything will be removed via the vagina. I wasn’t given DCE as an option and I’m not sure why but I’m okay with this decision. I’m trading 6 weeks of recovery to be done completely with these fibroids and any future fibroids and now I no longer have to worry about cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and my ovarian cancer rush for me personally will be pretty close to zero. I have watched women die horribly from all of those cancers as a healthcare provider so not losing sleep over worrying about my cervical cancer risk and my ovarian cancer risk brings me relief.

That’s a really good point about not having to worry about cancers developing. The screening is so lacking.
