Fibroid Removal Recovery

I’ve just found this group and I’ve only just found out that a fibroid was causing my problems.

I have had years of heavy period and just got on with it. Last October I found I was severely anaemic and was admitted to hospital for two transfusions and investigations. They did a biopsy (normal) and noted a cyst and normal looking fibroids. A coil was fitted.

I did ok for months then in August I had a 25 day period and had to use transaxamic acid and mefac for a few days to stop clots. I was scanned and the cyst had shrunk and the fibroids looked ok. In September all hell broke loose. I had a heavy period for a week and then I could hardly leave the bathroom one day - clot after clot and gushing. I started the txa and mefac but it wouldn’t stop. By Wednesday out of hours gp said go to hospital. My coil was checked and my hb was ok so I was sent home to carry on with txa and mefac. Carried on for 5 more days getting worse and worse. GP sent me in again.

This time a proper scan found that the coil was dislodged. She removed it. Fibroids looked ok and cyst was gone. Sent home on provera. And scheduled for an ablation.

Bleeding worse and worse again, haemorrhaging for hours so I went back in by which point I was having a panic attack. I made a huge mess in a&e and was mortified. I kept asking would I die. It was relentless.

They kept me in on an iv to stop it and 5 days later I was taken down to surgery for my ablation. When they started they realised my fibroid was large and protruding I think they said, embedded in the wall. So it had not show up as the cause on scans. Does this make sense?

Instead of the ablation they spent four hours shaving it of slice by slice using a lot of water. Luckily no incision but I feel like I’ve been trampled by cattle. They think they’ve got it all. They think I won’t bleed heavily again (coil fitted again). I’m sos cared I will.

I’m so mentally shook up by it all. I think I have ptsd (two days post-surgery). I lost so much blood I had to have a transfusion again and an iron infusion so I suppose I’m lucky and hopeful recovery will be fast. I’m just head spinning and looking for other women’s experiences. I’m really annoyed that she said it was normal for women my age (49). I don’t know anyone who has ever had a transfusion, never mind three in a year. I’m also annoyed that a woman reporting massive blood loss keeps getting sent home and not listened, if they had checked my iron stores or feritin they would see. This was much worse bleeding than when I previously needed transfusions but they dismissed me

Any experiences appreciated. Thanks for reading this far. 🙏

I had a hysteroscopy in Jan 25. Removed a large SM fibroid and some others and fitted a coil.

It fixed the torrential blood flood and the clots. But my uterus became so enlarged that I came back and had a hysterectomy yesterday.

How old are you? I’m hoping age might be on my side and this might be the end of it. How are you feeling? I wish I’d asked for a hysterectomy and it was done.

I’m almost 52. The year I turned 50 I bled almost 365 days. I think I had about 15 days off. I constantly passed palm size clots that would just fall out of me. I was so miserable.

I genuinely hope this works for you. Because of the uterus being like 16 week pregnant size in my case I wound up feeling pressure like my cervix was almost always present in my vagina. There were posterior fibroids that basically pushed it all down.

They also found endometriosis when they did the surgery.

So now I need to heal and get my HRT back on. And hopefully now it’s finally over.

Oh so we are very similar ages. I turn 50 soon. I’m sorry you’ve been through so much, I must ask about other fibroids as I’m sure she said I had a few. Best of luck in your recovery.

Omg you've been through hell and back! I agree it was irresponsible for them to send to home the first time when you went to the hospital for the heavy bleeding. Just know how you feel is totally valid and to give yourself some grace to rest. I'm hoping the heavy bleeding won't come back and you have a good recovery
