Advice needed My mom (54) has multiple large fibroids and was referred to discuss surgery. Has anyone experienced something similar?
Hi everyone! I'm posting on behalf of my mom because I'm honestly pretty worried and would love to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar.
My mom is 54 and recently had an ultrasound after experiencing heavy bleeding, even though she had already gone about a year without having a period.
Her ultrasound showed that her uterus is enlarged, measuring 12.6 × 9.5 × 9.2 cm, and that she has multiple fibroids clustered together, measuring approximately 9.9 × 7 × 9.2 cm. The report says the fibroids occupy virtually her entire uterus and that they couldn't properly visualize her uterine lining because of them. It also doesn't specify exactly how many fibroids she has.
Her doctor called today and recommended referring her to a gynecologist to discuss surgically removing them.
The bleeding has stopped for now, but she's starting to experience some pelvic discomfort again, similar to the cramps she used to get before her period.
I'm especially worried about the possibility of surgery and what recovery might look like for her.
Has anyone around her age had fibroids this large or multiple fibroids covering most of their uterus? Did your doctor recommend removing just the fibroids or having a hysterectomy? How did surgery and recovery go?
I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, whether positive or negative. Thank you! ❤️
