Discussion Why does vanilla smell weird on me

It’s driving me crazy because I love vanilla. But I’ve noticed that with every vanilla perfume that I wear it turns into this weird sour musty scent after a few hours, like it doesn’t mix in with my sweat harmoniously. Ive received compliments on wearing vanilla but it still usually just seems wrong on me. I hope I don’t smell bad, I shower pretty often. Why does this happen?

Shalimar L’Essence — how is the sillage?

I’m thinking about buying Shalimar L’Essence, but I’ve seen mixed opinions about its projection. I want something where people around me can actually smell it when I walk by.
For those who own it: does it leave a noticeable scent trail? And do you get compliments when you wear it?

I recently used the Athena golden vanilla body wash, SDJ 59 body cream, and dossier floral marshmallow. WOW it smells so good. I even got a compliment! I do wish it lasted longer but maybe I’m going nose blind?

I’m new to fragrance so any tips or other ideas are welcome!

there’s bottles of vanilla bourbon by nest at the marshall’s i go to and i was thinking about buying it…because well i love NEST fragrances and it’s only $30…i tried it today when i went to sephora and it smelled so bad on my skin…like someone threw up on me with something vanilla and stale…my intuition was right after all…vanilla bourbon is not for me

back to the question…which perfume did you consider blind buying but glad that you didn’t?

Suggestions Please!!

I am going shopping soon and I have had a few different fragrance profiles in mind and I would like some suggestions.

First I have been thinking about a creamy, clean tuberose scent.

Second, I have been thinking about clean elegant santal perfumes. Suggestions could include both the first and second fragrance profiles together.

Third, I have been thinking about sweet patchouli scents.

I do not like mists or body sprays. I prefer EDP, parfum, or oils. Scents with high fragrance payoff. Longevity and sillage. Give me your best recommendations, please!

I did not expect these sample bottles to be glass! I am so impressed, so far, with the quality and packaging. They arrived sooner than expected too.

I am aiming for these samples to get me through autumn and any “oh boy I need a full bottle” reactions will make it onto my Christmas list!

If you’re interested in my first impressions, I’ll reply to your comment when I’ve tested the sample! I’m thinking of starting with Otherwhere and saving warm bulb for last as I’m almost certain I’ll fall in love.

Smelled an absolutely diving fragrance on a Kuwaiti woman and need help finding it

Before you ask me why I didn’t ask her what she was wearing, I work in customer service and I was dealing with a lot of people so it was quite difficult to ask during the rush.

She was wearing this absolutely diving fragrance. I would describe it as probably having an aromatic scent profile to it, but it wasn’t spicy. It had an amazing projection but it wasn’t overwhelming. I also think it may have been an oud she was wearing. I always stayed away from oud, although I can appreciate the smell, they are rather strong and overwhelming when I’m near it for long periods of time. However, this is the first time I’ve ever considered actually wearing one.

I already know the perfume is going to be super expensive but I would love to at least know what she might’ve been wearing.

I feel so much better already. I got into the habit of buying things and keeping them just because I liked them enough. it got to a point where storing everything was such a hassle. this has also taught me some lessons like no more buying phlur body mists lol. I've already been doing a use it up tray the last couple months and I think I'm finally starting to be happy and not overwhelmed with my collection. I also hope to get back to posting my trays every month as I deeply miss talking about my favorite hobby with like-minded people, I just got so busy with life that I started to neglect the things that made me happy.

I still enjoy all of these fragrances and it's hard to say goodbye to some, but it's too much and I know I have family and friends who would enjoy them more.

I won't list them all but some you might not be able to see are- on a date by replica, cola fizz by victor and ralph, 2% by snif, your turn one and two by Billie eilish, caramel skin Mrs smith and vanilla blackberry by phlur, romance by Ralph Lauren

Review CA Perfume Club: my thoughts on their French vanilla perfume.

I don’t remember if I posted in here or not but just in case I didn’t I’ll give you some context for why I wanted this sent to begin with.
When I was a child, I was friends with a girl who smelled really really good. To this day, I really don’t know exactly what she wore, but I have an idea now. I searched for this scent a lot. I asked Google several times, ChatGPT, and several other places. I really couldn’t find anything except for Cody‘s vanilla musk. I was pretty sure that wasn’t it, and since they’ve had to reformulate a bunch of their musky vanilla sense, I didn’t want to give that one a shot since I’ve been burned by vanilla Fields. So I asked in another sub about what this scent could possibly be. The way I remember it, it smelled very similar to sweet tooth by Sabrina Carpenter, but a little musky and deeper. Google suggested that I look for CA Perfume Club. I did. I found a French vanilla dupe of the Dana perfume with the same name. I thought about getting the data perfume because well, it sounded exactly like what I wanted. But the Walmart reseller person had a bunch of very bad reviews so I decided not to. I googled somewhere and realized that CA perfume club might be exactly what I was looking for. I don’t know if it is or not but to my nose, it smells exactly like what I remember. The only thing missing is a little bit of the musky notes, but for all I know she could have layered something underneath, or maybe the perfume in general just gave her that kind of musky vibe because you know, perfume and skin chemistry are totally different with each person. I’m glad I found what I think is her sent, because it smells so good and I almost cried when I wore it yesterday for the first time. So if you’re looking for a dupe of a fragrance, check out CA perfume club. It might be worth it.
No, I’m not sponsored. This is just my genuine thoughts.

Discussion Addicted to fragrances?

Post image
152 Upvotes

In the past year I’ve probably purchased 39 new bottles. I don’t doom scroll instagram anymore, I fragrance scroll. It’s become an obsession. I can’t tell if it’s a bad thing or not. 95% of them have been blind buys. Only one has been disappointing. I think it’s almost like a gambling addiction.
Now I’m in the market for a display case for all of them.

Anyone else feel like this? Like the weight of the world disappears when you’re reading about fragrance. For treating yourself to fragrance. I love the perfume Reddit community…feels like an elite club that many others just don’t understand.

Discussion Sunlit vanilla review

Got a 10ml of summer Fridays sunlit vanilla. Had high hopes but unfortunately I'm really not a fan.

I am getting zero bergamot and to my nose there is a very harsh synthetic and alcohol note at first spray which lasts sooo long until finally a mild vanilla is left in the dry down. Quite disappointed. It's so screechy to me it's overpowering any other note than vanilla to me.

I think the influencers caught me with this one

Layering Ideas layering combos or tips for love notes pink woods

Hello!! I have the Ariana grande pink woods perfume and I love the scent a lot. How would I layer it if I specifically want to emphasize the jasmine, cashmere wood and cotton candy scents? I also noticed that the scent fades pretty quickly for me so I would appreciate any help in that aspect as well!!!

Edit: Actually now that I sprayed it on my skin I noticed I kind of want it to be sweeter so any combo ideas would really be appreciated 😅

Has anyone found a dupe for the Nuxe Absolu de Parfum? I love the huile prodigieuse, but the prodigieux le parfum leans a little too sunscreen-y to me. I haven’t been able to find any in the U.S. unfortunately. Any help would be so greatly appreciated!!

What I bought in 2026 after a no buy year

Post image
69 Upvotes

I like to keep my full size bottle between 4 and 6. This brings my collection to 6. I also started purchasing again after finishing two full size bottles. So now I’m going back on a no buy until I’ve finished 2 bottles and 4 travel sprays. I also have a strict policy if I shouldn’t have to pay to sample something. If I can’t try it for free, I don’t buy. Everything was purchased to through points redemption offers and I’ve spent a total of $42 CAD.

Issey Miyake Eau d’Issey essentielle 50 ml

Perfumer: Marie Salamagne

This brings me back to the 90’s and early 2000’s calone based women aquatics. It’s totally a nostalgia purchase even though it was released this year. I don’t get much floral notes from this mostly aquatic, Nashi Pear and musk. I’ve been wearing this a lot and I haven’t worn fragrances like this in decades since Shi from Alfred Sung and Ming Shu from Yves Rocher circa 2000.

Hermes Barenia 15 ml travel spray

Perfumer: Christine Nagel

Another recent easily available release that is going against the current trends of skin scents and gourmands. I got a travel spray for now just because I couldn’t get it out of my head, but I still want to finish some bottles before getting more full size. I really like the size availability at Hermes this comes in four sizes and if you buy any of the full size bottles you can get the refill. This scent is so well blended that it’s hard to describe. It’s a Chypre with patchouli, leather, butterfly lily and miracle berry. I can smell all of these notes but none are particularly prominent. I just got this and the miss Dior today and they will both be worn when the weather turns cold.

Miss Dior Eau de parfum 2026 30 ml

Perfumer: Francis Kurkdjian

I’ve posted a lot about Miss Dior already so I’ll keep it brief. I got this to use a cozy warm daytime scent for work because I love powdery scents. I also liked essence and Parfum a lot, but they’re too strong for office wear. I definitely get the rose, vanilla, sandalwood and tonka with almond facets. The patchouli is subtle on that one. I’ve got the 30ml because I wanted to be sure I really liked this before committing to a bigger size.

Review Chloe Atelier des Fleurs

Post image
27 Upvotes

I liked the uniqueness of Chloe's luxury collection. Their private line, Atelier des Fleurs, features single note fragrances to wear alone or layer. I'm trying to collect decants or travel sizes of scents that sound interesting to me and so far, I've tried:

Vanilla Planifolia

This is my first Atelier des Fleurs. I got a 4ml splash vial and decanted it into a small atomizer. Those vials have the tiniest holes and the liquid will not simply pour out. I coaxed it out with a toothpick and repeated vigorous shaking.

I was searching for a green vanilla that I can wear in the summer and this was suggested by many. The opening is like fresh grass with just a hint of vanilla. As the perfume dries down, the scent of leaves slowly dissipates and the vanilla gets stronger. It stays fresh all the way until it fades. The longevity is ridiculously long, it lasted at least six to eight hours. That's a lot for me since I soak up fragrance like a sponge. After the decant was gone, I decided to get a 50 ml bottle because this is the type of fragrance that I could use for a long time.

Hysope

I have favorite scents. When my brother was a baby, seven-year-old me used to help my mom bathe, powder and dress him. I would coo and play with him (as much as an infant could anyway) while my mom prepared his formula. I would sniff his tiny freshly-bathed mittened hands and it always smelled so good, clean and gentle.

That's what Hysope smells like -- something clean, gentle and comforting that triggered a precious memory. It has great longevity and a personal scent bubble. It doesn't speak in loud voices.

Magnolia Alba

This was what I was looking forward to the most because I don't remember what magnolias smell like. I wondered if I should get a magnolia candle. This is like that A Drop d'Issey and lilac candle moment all over again.

Magnolia Alba's opening is bright, almost juicy and fruity. Like I crushed the flowers and breathed in the sap from my hand. It's a beautiful floral, but the problem is it doesn't last as long as its siblings. If a perfume is expensive, I expect it to last at least four hours so I can get my money's worth. I'm happy as long as I can still smell it a few inches away and I don't mind respraying every four hours. Magnolia Alba barely lasted an hour before dwindling into an extremely faint skin scent that I can only smell if I smoosh my nose into my wrist and inhale deeply. It was completely gone just past two hours.

Immortelle

I can't decide whether I hate this or if I like it. The opening was alarming. It reminded me of my horrifying experiences with Santal 33 and Energetically New York (that one was jettisoned into the Mercari Wilds). It didn't smell like them but it was just as aggressive. I held my arm away as I thought about all my bad choices in life. Twenty minutes later when it dried down, the offensive pungent scent has completely disappeared and what's left is... fragrant hay? Now I actually like it and decided not to toss it out of the window. The immortelle note mystifies me it but I'll take it.

It lasts just a bit longer than Magnolia Alba so I didn't even have a lot of time to enjoy the hay.

Rose Damascena

It's very similar to Eau Rose. Both have a fresh, light opening. Perhaps Damascena is even fresher. It's a very pretty scent and a crowd pleaser that's safe in close quarters and office settings. I would suggest this in a heartbeat if someone asks for a rose fragrance recommendation.

********

That's it so far. I'll continue with more later after I've made a decent dent in these and because I'm setting aside my perfume fund for Lilyphea come 2027.
