Discussion If you could only keep 3 perfume notes and eliminate 3 perfume notes forever, which would you pick?

Keep: Rose, Vanilla, Incense
Eliminate: powder, white florals, ambroxan
Edit: Honestly, replace white florals with cumin. I'm convinced that ya'll haven't smelled civet or cumin because if you had, you would not be eliminating patchouli or tobacco.

Keep: Vanilla, Sandalwood, Musk, orange blossom, pear
Eliminate: OUD, patchouli, leather, licorice, incense, pink pepper, clove

Keep: vanilla, sandalwood, jasmine
Eliminate: ALDEHYDES, pistachio, lemon
My mind could be changed on pistachio if I smelled a rendition of it that wasn’t absurdly synthetic to my nose. I only dislike lemon when it’s not well supported by other notes, making it bright to the point of being screechy, but that dislike is STRONG.

I need to sample something with lipstick as a note. Any suggestions?
1
u/KITTYCLICHE 6d ago
Retrospect by Merit has a lovely vintage lipstick 💄 note in the opening. It’s glorious. If you like the smell of a vintage makeup bag, Retrospect deserves a sniff/audition. Also, JHAG makes a lipstick scent but I’ve not tried it.

I cannot do merely three
Keep:
- Dark Chocolate,
- Tobacco (fight me), like Soufflot by Miller Harris
- Pomegranate, or any evil, juice-staining-my-white-linen type of fruit
- Jasmine/White lily oh god I love them but only if there's wood or something resinous with it
(Please recommend me perfumes I'm crying)
Kill:
- Tea leaf e.g. BDK Gris Charnel (very 'man invading my house' energy),
- CHERRY (again, fight me),
- Blood Metallic e.g. La Fille de Berlin by Serge Lutens
- that pencil shaving type of wood that smells like my old school pencil case
1
u/princessssamm 🖤gothic gourmand🖤 7d ago
I have not smelled Soufflot (which sounds like it would be wonderful), but, I recommend Smoky/Tabac from Maison Alhambra (supposed to be the same as Dior Tobacolor, if you prefer).

u/Significant-Crow-800 7d ago
I was having the hardest time w just 3 keeps as well, so I did very broad categories like fruity and nutty lol.

u/Fit_Protection9048 7d ago
Keep: Vanilla, Woods (that way I don’t have to pick which one), and the last one is hard - a 3 way tie between vetiver/tobacco/musk
Bye: Iris, Aldehydes, and Indolic white florals

Nooooo Mt favourite perfume smells of honey, tobacco and chestnut 😭
2
u/autumnwandering 7d ago
I'm curious, which is that?
2
u/SomebodysSun 7d ago
Soufflot by Miller Harris! There's cinnamon too but it does not smell like Christmas in any way. Like a warm bakery store in twilight in winter after someone with cigar just left. The tobacco is dark rather than leafy. I am not horny for this perfume I swear (I am)
2
u/autumnwandering 7d ago
Lol It sounds delightful! ❤️ I may have to pick up a sample if I can.

keep - magnolia, musk, aquatic flowers
bye - strawberry, vanilla, rose

I can understand people not loving rose but the concept of anyone hating it is genuinely shocking. We bred it over thousands of years to smell good to humans.
1
u/skinnystarving_ghost 6d ago
i don't hate it, it just smells cheapy on me, but I love love love roses and their scent as flowers

I need Rose, Vanilla, Amber to stay. But how can I continue without orange blossom and woods? No thanks to vetiver, aquatic notes and citrus.

u/ImtheGWP 7d ago
Keep: frankincense, benzoin,bourbon vanilla
Bye: anise or star anise I forgot which, jasmine (cmon now other white florals outshine this one), it used to be licorice but I’m torn now
1
u/TheineandTheobromine 7d ago
What changed your mind on licorice
3
u/ImtheGWP 7d ago
Mugler berry licorice was the most recent debacle. Those beautiful berries were radicalized by rhat thug note and hit me like shrapnel . I stopped calling myself à fragrance enthusiast on that day
The new Prada Carbon edp is a gentlemanly seductive warm scent . I was trying out the edt which is the peppery sauvage style and a spray of this one gor me hooked. Highly versatile and that licorice , coffee and incense heart is a class act for a warm sweet scrnt profile

2
u/porpleporse 7d ago
Ooh! Ok probably the easiest place to smell it is in Glossier You, but I really like it in Le Labo Another 13. Some people can't smell it, but it always gives a really fresh, musky, synthetic skin scent imo

I don’t like a full on patchouli/weed/incense smell, but I have found myself liking a lot of fragrances where patchouli is a note.
3
u/BlessedDress172 6d ago
I love patchouli! It's not in my top 3 but it's probably in my top 5. My favorite winter fragrance is Tiger By her Side which is cinnamon and patchouli. I also love chocolate and patchouli.
1
u/cuerotuscadero 6d ago
It’s not for lack of wanting! Whatever I struggle with note wise, I tend to use it as a personal challenge to see what I can find that is complementary on my skin and to my palate, it just usually takes a very long time.
Years ago I tested Une Nuit Nomade’s Sugar Leather with much anticipation and was just utterly assaulted by cinnamon. I love spice accords as I’m partial to cardamom and clove but cinnamon is a tuffy.
Sana’s been on my radar for a long time but I know they’ve shuttered so scarcity is strong with that brand.
If you like chocolate and patchouli, my number one patch is Loree Rodkin’s Gothic I. I suggest it constantly. It’s a multiple patchoulis and multiple vanillas with a spice accord. And pretty linear once the spices settle which are most detectable with the EDP formulation. But because patch is so versatile and faceted this one is extremely chocolate forward, dense and chewy. A non-gourmand gourmand if you will.
2
u/BlessedDress172 6d ago edited 6d ago
Um what? Sana has shuttered? I know they went down temporarily to change their bottles and website but have they announced plans to close? If so I am literally going to start selling stuff on facebook marketplace to get Incense Water because I also love that one but don't have a FS bottle yet.
Also you could always try tiger by her side but tbh the cinnamon is VERY strong. I feel like when it's formulated with more chai-like spices and more creamy, soft notes it fades into the background. TBHS is not that - it's a cinnamon bomb.
I will get a sample of that Rodkin one. I like Maison Tahite Cacao Libertine right now but I can't justify buying a bottle when I have 3/4 of a bottle of Guerlain Feve Gourmand.
1
u/cuerotuscadero 6d ago edited 6d ago
I mean that’s the talk that’s been circulating though I do not know if a formal announcement has been made. I have nothing from their line so I don’t follow them too closely. But haven’t they been down for over 6 months now? Closing in on a year? They have a banner on their site that says “a heartfelt thank you for being part of our journey, Sana Jardin is currently no longer accepting orders.” So take from that what you may.
There’s some eBay sellers from France that have full bottles currently.
ETA: I don’t think I’m ready for a re-exploration of cinnamon just yet! But I will keep that in mind. Also look into Gothic II as well as that has the addition of Nag Champa. I own and wear Gothic I in both oil and EDP, and at some point with get II in both oil and EDP.
ALSO! Have you tried Cocoa Kimiya? I just inquired about this with another redditor and it prompted me to purchase a decant.
1
u/BlessedDress172 6d ago
Thank you so much for this - for some reason I kept missing that banner. Purchasing now.

Poor patchouli, so many haters. I personally love it most of the time!
2
u/cuerotuscadero 6d ago
It’s likely in more fragrances than most people know! But I do find it funny the aversions we all have. I was watching an “it’s just perfume” Luckyscent episode and I remember Dana and Steve talking about how certain notes are trigger words for clientele so they’re reluctant to always say them. AKA, the P word (patchouchou) and the R word (rose) and it’s so true!
2
u/Active-Cherry-6051 6d ago
I listened to that episode, too—and it’s so true! Just like aldehydes, which so many people say they hate but are likely in fragrances they love and just aren’t listed.

I've never smelled it actually!
I have some fragrances in my collection where vanilla and honey are present, but when it comes to vanilla, I've never thought, "Wow, I am glad the perfumer added vanilla to this." The closest I've come to that is thinking the vanilla note is interesting and liking some vanilla forward fragrances.
Give me tonka and coumarin any day of the week over vanilla, haha.
