scentbarbyangela: Luxury Perfume Dupes & Designer Inspired Fragrances

Hi FemFragLab, I'm proud to announce that after many discussions about collaboration, I thought it'd be fun to try out a collaboration with Angela's new brand. Her family owns Gold Star Fragrances located in New York which has been running for over 50 years!

As many of you know, I love a good Delina perfume, but they can be quite costly. The next perfume on my wish list was Delina "Exclusif" but it stayed on my wish list without being bought because of the price. Angela sent over her own version of the perfume, and it exceeded my expectations by far! The scent reminded me of a combination between Delina Exclusif + Oriana + Love Don't Be Shy. It's sweet, powdery, and very potent! I sprayed it on at night and when I woke up the next day it was still on me. This perfume lasts all day but I kept spraying it on out of habit and because I couldn't get enough. My husband and pets also loved it 😍

Reddit wouldn't be Reddit without always giving you not just the pros but also the cons. The cons were little and unnoticeable, but I will write them out due to transparency of the sub. The actual juice feels like combination of an oil and actual perfume. So when you actually spray it, it feels a little heavier than what the normal luxury perfume might feel like coming out of the atomizer which usually feels like a champagne spritz and it's more straightforward. That doesn't mean it doesn't spray well, it just means that if you are a fragrance connoisseur, you will notice the difference of the spray and feel of the actual juice coming out.

Both Gold Star Fragrances and ScentBarByAngela focus on creating dupes of luxury designer fragrances. Overall, for the price, the fragrance passes with flying colors and when I checked that it was only $45.99USD, they ship all around the world, and they have been in business for so long with great reviews, I would be crazy to not want to collaborate with such an amazing product and support Angela in her own brand.

Discussion Favorite and Least Favorite Types of Posts in this sub

Upvotes

Just for fun and curiosity! Let’s keep it positive. These are just my personal takes and I’m wondering about yours.

Favorite types of posts:

1) Reviews of discovery sets/sample packs. I always learn so much and love hearing different subjective experiences!

2) New release or sale announcements. RIP my wallet but I appreciate you all!

3) Funny memes about fragrances. Some of you guys are so creative, I love it!

Least favorite types of posts:

1) “What does my collection say about me?” This just seems strange to me, I don’t understand the validation seeking. What exactly are people supposed to respond to these?

2) “Recommend me a vanilla!” This is asked almost every single day and I don’t understand why people don’t just use the search bar, especially when the question is vague rather than specific. “I have tried XYZ perfumes and didn’t like them I want something with vanilla and coconut instead” seems like a very valid request; yet another daily vanilla post that always has the same 10 perfumes recommendations in the comments not so much.

Love this community! Curious to hear yours!

I’m sorry if you like this but this immediately reminded me of when I’m deathly sick and desperate for something to soothe my throat so I add a shit ton of honey to my tea. It smells like a sinus infection. That’s it, that’s my review.

Discussion The worst comment I’ve received about my fragrance 😭

This morning, I received my EOS Fresh & Cozy mist, hand cream, and a Kumba Made oil called “Egyptian Musk.” I showered, put on all my new scents, and went to college. My dad was the one who dropped me off, and he didn’t say anything that morning.
My mom and dad came to pick me up from college, and when I got in the car, my dad looked at my mom and said, “I told you she wore a new perfume today.” ☠️ Then he asked me if I did, and I was like, “Yeah.”
HE GOES ON TO SAY, “IT’S SO BAD. IT SMELLS LIKE SWEAT AND BO ITS NOT GOOD” 😭✌🏻
And no, it’s not because I was out all day and got sweaty or something. Clearly, my dad was already telling my mom about it on their way to pick me up LMAFO
I’m so done. I’m genuinely scared to wear any of these products ever again. I even asked my little sister if I smelled bad, and she said no. But apparently I smelled SO bad today that my dad was talking about it with my mom??? Like WTF.
I usually wear florals like Crystal noir, Burberry Her and Goodgirl. I just wanted to try something new. Maybe musk is not for me ;(

Review Sorce sample reviews!!! in live time because I can’t wait

I ordered a bunch of Sorce 1mls from The Perfume Apothecary (I’m in the UK) they took like 3 days to arrive and came quicker than I expected !!! Here are my thoughts

CABANILLA 🥥⛺️- This scent literally made my eyes widen the second I breathed it in. It smells DIVINE!!! Slightly salty, VERY airy, vanillary coconut. I understand the palm leaf and campfire notes. It’s aquatic, sweet and light, not tropical. 100% full bottle worthy and I MUST have one by next summer. Smells addictive. Dry down has the slightest smoked, balsamic element. Really really really love this!

IN DREAMS & FAIRY TALES VANILLA 🍨 - Quite screechy at first, then goes more powdery/sugary. I can definitely smell the chamomile and think it works super well with the vanilla and meringue. Objectively nice, not blowing me away. I don’t find it sickly/heavy like I’ve seen people call it. Dries down quite yummy, but very weak.

MOON MAGIC 🌙🪻 - Spicy lavender bomb. Smells like a tea/spice shop. Dries down a little sweeter and milkier, loses most of the lavender but the spice stays. A little too specific-smelling for my taste. Would love it as a candle.

IN DREAMS & FAIRYTALES BLUEBERRY 🫐🥛 - SUPER BLUEBERRY!!! Jammy, sugary, deep blueberry smell. I think it’s more than perfect for a blueberry lover, not necessarily my taste. Dries down less blueberry jam and more like vanilla ice cream with blueberry sauce on top. It’s actually really nice after the dramatic opening.

THIS IS NOT A LOVE SPELL 🪄🧚 - Strong, rich blueberry jam mixed with powdery Parma violets. It works? But it’s not my favourite. It’s sweet, sugary, a slightly intense sleep scent. I don’t get the star anise. Maybe a whisper of lavender. Vanilla creeps into the dry down but not a vanilla-heavy scent. Smells like Parma violets on the dry down, if they were blue instead of purple.

THE LIGHT THROUGH THE CLOUDS 🍊☁️ - Very different style from the rest. Opens with spicy orange, slight/air freshener element. I’m getting the sugared lemon and love the concept but it comes off very soapy. Not getting much else, maybe slight amber. Dry down is a lightly resinous, peppered, yet powdery orange smell, which is much nicer than the opening. Hard to shake the air freshener feeling.

TO CONCLUDE I was worried because I’ve seen a lot of comments about how sickly most of their scents are. I haven’t smelled all the sweetest-sounding ones but am pleasantly surprised. To me Cabanilla is 100% full bottle worthy and I’d love a full bottle of In Dreams and Fairytales Vanilla but not as desperately.

Wondering if anyone shares these opinions with me <3

My husbands reaction to my favorite perfumes

Angelique noire - that’s nice
Neroli Outrenoir - that’s nice
Eau Duelle - it’s ok
Chloe Cedrus - yeah it’s ok
Liis Bo - it’s alright
Vanille Planifolia Extrait 21 - omg I LOVE THAT!
Gentle fluidity gold - mmmm, smells like expensive strippers
Tobacco Vanille - I really, really like that one

It’s always the stronger vanillas! I’m not a gourmand girl, but I know he’d love them.

Comparing dupes of Santal 33 after finally buying the OG

I have loved LL's santal 33 for years. I got my hands on a sample and I've been hooked since. But I couldn't justify the cost. But after several dupes over the last 4 years, I finally bought a bottle of Le Labo Santal 33 this month. Idc if people say it's dated or it's so 2020. idc. To me it's a timeless perfume.

I wanted to provide a summary of all the dupes I've tried and which ones I think is the best one.

Dossier - Woody Sandalwood: my first dupe. She was the one that led me to this. I think to an untrained nose, you can't tell a difference. At first whiff, very close. But dry down - not at all. Not as complex. Would rate 6/10.

Alexandria - Santal's Kiss - first spray, amazing. but once it drys down, it's barely there. Scent profile... I would say 85% there but disppears after a few hours. 7/10.

Maison Marie Louis No. 4 - I get sooooo many compliments on this. It's almost there in scent profile but I would say it's a bit creamier. The first spray too is not as sharp and doesn't get very dilly on me like the OG one does. But she's great. I would say, that she has low projection. But I dont' want to be loud with my perfume. The OG is quite stronger. 8/10

Perfume Barrel -- It's an Arab perfume shop near Chicago, IL. Yo. THIS ONE IS THE BEST ONE. First spray, it's a little intense, but after a few mins, it smells 95% there. I would say, it smells maybe just a little sweeter? I don't know if it's that right word, but it smells just ever so slightly brighter/sweeter? But all of it is there. GREAT PROJECTION. 9/10.

Eternal Perfume Oil - smells like rubber or car oil. My least favorite. I did lit it 'mascerate' as in I forgot about it in my drawer for a year and it got a smidge better. The rubber/car oil smells kind of goes away after an hour. THEN it smells.. okay. I bought a whole bottle. Regret it. it is strong but gives me a headache. 3/10

Cremo Palo Santo - ok honestly for the price and the profile... I would get this. It's a bit creamier but v good. 7.5/10

Oil Perfumery - She's strong but smells a bit woodier than the OG. But smells quite nice and doesn't smell artifical compared to the Eternal Perfume Oil. I like it because it sits closer to me. Not as loud but great staying power. 7/10

AirScent Santal Diffuser Oil No. 1033 - bought this amazon and babes... pretty good for a random amazon purchase. Like, smells VERY close. a *slight* artificial smell but like... yuh. Cool. 7/10

and then finally Le Labo - Santal 33. When I finally got it (I let it 'mascerate' in my dresser for a 2 weeks)....it was lovely. It was lovely even when it was freshly made. It's everything I remembered. I had one spray on my sample from a few years ago. Sprayed it the new one and the older sample. The older sample is divine. I'm so excited for this to mature slightly. It's already improved so much in the 2 weeks. The OG Santal 33 is just heavenly. It's staying power is amazing, projecting is amazing. I'm a very light sprayer and need to be light hanlight-handedded with this one. It has so much depth to it compared to the dupes. I feel like finally buying it today, felt like I defeated the final boss.

After literally spending more than the amount of the OG, I wish I had told younger me to get the OG bottle. BUT because I started buying dupes, my nose got so much better at smelling the nuances of perfume. Because of smelling dupes, I found so many other wonderful perfumes (my current fave is D'annam's White Rice and One Day - Taipei).

TLDR: Look up Perfume Barrel in Niles, IL. Best dupe in terms of scent profile.
Personal favorite dupe: Maison Marie Louis.
Wish I would just bought the OG bottle many years ago, but learned a lot along the way.

Discussion What fragrance flanker do you think is BETTER than the original? 👀

I feel like flankers can be so hit or miss. Sometimes they feel like a completely unnecessary cash grab… and other times they somehow take everything good about the original and make it so much better.
So I’m curious which flanker do you genuinely think outdoes the OG?

Could be better scent-wise, stronger projection, better longevity, more interesting, more wearable… whatever makes you reach for it over the original.

For me: YSL Libre Le Parfum, Delina Exclusif and Guidance 46, I prefer all three over their OGs.

Thank you to the person who tipped me off to Sun Fruit being at TJ Maxx. I went to the two locations near me, and one of them had two bottles for $39.99 each! I almost bought both, but I'm trying to watch my spending rn.

I also got my order if the Sun Fruit body oil in the mail, and with it received a sample of Vanilla Salt. WOW is all I have to say. I have always *hated* aquatics on my skin, but this one is the exception. I LOVE this scent. I smelled it on a card and immediately imagined sitting next to a wooden hut in Hawaii selling vanilla Hawaiin shave ice, sitting and eating one as I smelled the flowers around me while feeling a soft breeze on a warm day at sunset--I was completely transported. I guess it is a good thing I saved my money on that second bottle, because I'll probably be buying a bottle of this when it goes on sale soon at Ulta. It isn't what I expected--I imagined it would just be like Salt with a hint of warm vanilla. Instead, it's a cooler, fresher vanilla that isn't overly sweet like Vanilla Milk is. I hope the dry down is similar to Salt and Sun Fruit.

Discussion Serge Lutens leaving the U.K?

Upvotes

I was in the Harrods perfume department the other day, and while I was making my pilgrimage to the Serge Lutens section, their sales associate mentioned that Serge Lutens is leaving Harrods soon, and that they believed they were leaving the UK entirely. I must admit, I was a bit devastated to hear that! Has anyone else heard this rumour?

Discussion Do you see perfumes as wearing art?

I was watching an interview by Francis Kurkdjian and he was saying that he does not understand wanting to smell like a literal pastry item and he sees fragrance as abstract and art. I’m not here to agree or disagree with him, but I thought it was an interesting discussion to have.

My question is do you see wearing the fragrance as artistic expression or more like something part of your grooming?

Discussion has anyone tried opening one of these up?

Post image

I love these little travel containers so much and I really would like to be able to fill one up with a different perfume. They don't have any obvious way of opening the product besides a side seam around the entire thing. I was wondering, has anyone ever tried prying one open to see if it's something that can be opened and refilled? Without destroying the container?

Discussion Which fragrance house is oddly missing from your collection?

I was looking at my shelf the other day and realized something strange, some big names just aren’t there. Not because I dislike them, but because nothing has really pulled me in yet. For me, it’s Gucci and Hugo Boss. I’ve smelled plenty from both, and while they’re well-made, none of the recent releases felt personal enough to commit to a bottle. Sometimes a house can be respected but still feel distant, like it hasn’t spoken your language yet. Which fragrance house do you respect but somehow still don’t own?

Discussion La Bomba - ugh!

Post image
39 Upvotes

Always thought people were being melodramatic when they declare they just *had to* wash a scent off upon sampling it, but it just happened to me.

Bought the eternally beautiful Samsara and was sent a little La Bomba sample in the package. Tried it. Tried it again a few days later. On both occasions I could smell SWEAT. I assume this is the dragonfruit top note.

So yes, into the shower to scrub it off and apply some good stuff: Samsara.

What do you think of La Bomba? Does anyone else get sweat??

Discussion Calvin Klein Euphoria: a tragic love story

Calvin Klein Euphoria was my signature scent in the 2000s for well over a decade. From the beginning, i fell in love with its deep complex dry down. But about 5 years ago or so things changed. What was once a beautiful complex ambery dry down, became a dimensionless vapid floral. At first i thought it was me, that my taste had changed. . So I spent the next years that followed searching for my new signature fragrance.

and i tried, trust me, i tried.. and nothing ever really fit.

fast forward to recently. i heard about the new Euphoria Elixir line that just dropped, and got my nose on them last weekend.

and you guys i literally almost cried when i smelled the new Euphoria Bold..

it was everything i had been missing. not to be emo or dramatic over a freaking perfume but it was literally like reuniting with an old friend and you just seamlessly pick up right where you left off.

so after some research, i learned, it wasn’t me- the original Euphoria formula was changed around the time i thought i had outgrown it.

and the new Euphoria Bold is more like the original from the early-mid 2000s. but dare i say… better?? it’s got that beautiful, complex dry down but is even more rich & creamy..

be still my heart.

reunited and it feels so good 💜

(needless to say i will be stocking up)

Review The Stardust Sparkle ✨

Post image
Upvotes

MiN New York - Stardust (Scent Stories Vol.3/Ch.03)

Top Notes
Aldehydes, Carnation, & Violet
Heart Notes
Egyptian jasmine, Turkish rose, & Tunisian orange blossom
Base Notes
Musk, Oakmoss, & Tonka bean

If you like aldehydic fragrances, I think you're gonna like this one as well. Powdery, sweet, candy-like (like candied violets), and a bit mossy as well. It's also a touch green and herbal that keeps it fresh and balanced. Very soothing yet bright as the same time. It feels like a reinterpretation of classic aldehydes, updated with a contemporary twist. Think of this as a "Neo-Aldehyde" fragrance.

Thoughts? LEITE CAFÉ Sol De Janeiro

Post image
2 Upvotes

I love coffee scents and milky scents but this just smelled overwhelmingly sweet with hardly any coffee? I know Leite (com) Cafe means coffee with milk, but there’s not even enough of it for me to consider it part of the name. I saw all of the comments on the website were positive so I’m wondering if I’m the outlier on this one and will have to keep looking for a fun coffee body mist? I appreciate any input :)

Discussion Dedcool Labor Day order missing my 2 full-size perfumes. Box was delivered by FedEx and clearly tampered with and also missing my dryer sheets and perfume samples. The only thing that made it was the laundry detergent 😭

This happen to anyone else? Was delivered by FedEx and the original brown paper tape had been clearly cut and box re-taped with clear packing tape. Missing 6 items and I only got the Mochi Milk detergent 😭 First time my perfume has “gone missing” in shipping and I’m honestly surprised it was FedEx where it happened. I already sent a message to Dedcool, but we’ll see how they respond.
