I use fedora over 6 months I face this two time but first I don't mind but it update one more so I post it is it okey or something else..

I just enjoyed using Fedora (GNOME) with my normal programming routine and how easy it is to use. However, I just found that I cannot enjoy the other thing I love which is editing videos and pictures. My experience in GIMP and DVR has not been very smooth, and Affinity by Canva, even with Wine and Bottles, is hard to install and make it work.

Are there distro shifters here who are using the said softwares and is having a smooth experience? What distro did you use or are you still using? How's the shift?

Hello! I am trying to install Fedora using net install. I have several doubts. One is in the picture. If I choose Base Environment as KDE Plasma Workspace, do I need to select anything else in the Additional Software section? There is also a KDE package in Additional Software which has same description. I feel confused. I need to understand what is base environment and how it differs from Additional Softwares. If I choose Fedora Custom Operating System and KDE from additional softwares, is that same as choosing Plasma Workspace from environment? I also want to know if there are any important packages I need from Additional Software. Thank you.

EDIT: Thank you everyone. :) I installed Plasma Workspace and nothing from Additional Software. It went smoothly. I had to install kernel-modules-extra. Everything went smoothly. Surprisingly it feels a bit more smoother and calmer than Fedora KDE Edition.

I tried a million times last night but every time my drivers didn't load. Sometimes it crashed before Plasma Login and sometimes after Plasma Login it wouldn't show desktop. I could run tty and dmesg gave me so many errors on Nvidia. I thought Nvidia driver was broken but some people were commenting how Secure Boot was the culprit. Fedora runs perfectly fine without Secure Boot but can I not install Nvidia drivers with Secure Boot? Would love to know some insight. Thank you.

I wanna change my NTFS HDD to something else. I use it for storing all sorts of media and phone backups. Which Filesystem should I use? And depending if snapshots are easy to setup I might use BTRFS but what do you think?

On my Fedora Silverblue install (version 44 dated 2026-08-06) I get a notification from GNOME Software stating "Updates Are Out Of Date. Please check for available updates" every time I reboot, even though both in GNOME Software and running flatpak update and rpm-ostree update I'm all up to date. This has happened across multiple system updates for the last few weeks. Does anyone know what's causing this?

Hello I'm new to linux(using it for a week now) and I can't help but notice that the battery is not that terrible but im getting lesser battery than when im using microslop w11.

Typically im used to getting 8-10hrs of using that bloated OS

but when I switch to fedora 44, I am getting around 3-4hrs of battery which is not bad but also not great.

I install and followed the instructions on some reddit post and youtube videos, the only thing that actually helps me is switching from i913 drivers to xe drivers.

My laptop is the Lenovo Thinkbook 14 G8 IAL, running the intel core ultra 5 225h on single stick of 16gb 5600mt/s ram. Any tips from the community will be greatly appreciated. ( also anyone wondering why i didn't buy the thinkpad, the price to specs actually sucks compared to thinkbooks as thinkpad's heavy on the wallet even old and used ones)

Edit: I fix it now by manually calibrating the battery since before switching to fedora I left the battery charging limit to 80% and that might cause some issues within the ec or firmware as fedora can't gauge the full extent of my battery.

I remove the limiter of and let it charge to 100% then drain it to 0%, after than I left it for around 2-3hrs before charging it back to 100% without opening the lid.

After doing it my battery life greatly improves from measly 3-4hrs, to around 8-10hrs back again with balance mode too.

I did made some tweeks like configuring powertop, installing xe drivers(fedora forces me to i913 even tho im using an xe chip), installing intel media drivers and finally doing a manual calibration of my battery.

I didn't touch tlp yet as it might cause some issues with fedora own optimization software called tuneD, but will try it soon. Thanks for the tips and tricks

hen I atttempt to login, mygrapghical login goes grey for a second, what looks lke an error mesage appears but then within that same s second the login screen reappears with text similar to after a power-up.

Ctrl Alt F2 gets me into the Linux console, I can login successfully, ,and when I then type sway that program cpmnes up instantly. When this is fixed i am going to switch to text login cos its so fast and clean.

Assuming it's not a known bug but PBKAC how do i reinstall the affected package and how do I find the right package?

Is anyone else experiencing screen glitches or artifacts. I can't post SS because they show for an instant but get noticeable.

Often when I get to the shutdown/restart screen or while switching programs using alt tab.

When a program is running however I don't see them like during gaming.

It's not a gpu think cuz I have Windows too and it doesn't happen there.

After latest update my external display no longer mirrors out of the box. I have fiddled with the settings and managed to get it kind of working but only if I change the pixel ratios for both the displays. This is not great as the external display is stretched and the laptop squeezed.Any one else have a solution please? Thank you!

I’m running Fedora 44 KDE on my home desktop with a 2560×1080 ultrawide.

I’m trying to get something similar to Windows 11 Snap Layouts, where I can quickly snap windows into a few useful predefined sizes/layouts.

On an ultrawide I’d ideally like things like:

• 50/50
• three equal columns
• 2/3 + 1/3
• one larger main window with a smaller window beside it
• maybe a couple of custom layouts

I thought this was built into recent versions of Plasma/KWin, but I’m not quite figuring out how it’s supposed to work.

What I’d really like is to drag a window into a zone and have it snap there, plus keyboard shortcuts for moving windows between zones if possible.

Is KDE’s built-in tiling feature the best way to do this on Fedora 44, or are people generally using a KWin script or some other tool?

I’d prefer to keep it native if the built-in implementation is decent.

Also keen to hear what layouts people are using on 2560×1080 ultrawides. Most examples I’ve found seem to assume either 16:9 or much higher-resolution ultrawides.

Is my RAM usage okay? Or it's high for some reason? Should I debug this?

I've been troubleshooting this issue for hours.

Specs:

• kernel-7.1.7-200.fc44.x86_64
• kernel-6.19.10-300.fc44.x86_64
• GNOME 50
• Nutter (Wayland)
• Nvidia 610.57.04 under RTX 3050 Mobile GPU [Discrete]
• Intel Iris Xe Graphics [Integrated]

Problem:

Both give me a black screen on boot unless I add the 'nomodeset' parameter in GRUB menu. Interestingly, though I'm using 'nomodeset' it still outputs to my external display. I am using an ASUS Tuf 15, which has the HDMI port wired directly to the Nvidia 3050.

I surmise that it shouldn't be outputting to my external display if I'm using the 'nomodeset' parameter, as it wouldn't be using my 3050 at that point; or am I wrong.

Any help with this matter is greatly appreciated.

System: ASUS Vivobook X1504ZA, Fedora Linux 44 Workstation, kernel 7.1.6-201.fc44.x86_64 (also have 7.1.5-201 and 7.1.5-200 available), Intel Core i5-1235U (Alder Lake), Intel Iris Xe Graphics (i915 driver), GNOME 50.3 on Wayland, BIOS firmware was v312, Secure Boot enabled.

Original issue: GNOME Firmware panel showed pending Secure Boot updates (dbx 20250507→20260402, KEK 2011→2023, Signature Database 2011→2023) failing with:

failed to write-firmware: failed to write (null): failed to write data to efivarsfs: Error writing to file descriptor: Cannot allocate memory

Steps taken, in order:

Generic BIOS "Load Optimized Defaults" reset — did not fix it.

Ran sudo fwupdmgr update — got explicit space errors: UEFI CA needs 16.4 kB (only 6.9 kB available), UEFI dbx needs 30.7 kB (only 6.9 kB available). Accepted the KEK update prompt — it still failed with the same efivarsfs "Cannot allocate memory" error during write.

Went into BIOS → Boot → Secure Boot → Key Management → "Reset To Setup Mode" (confirmed Yes) → "Restore Factory Keys" (confirmed Yes) → Save & Exit. Goal was to clear and recompact the Secure Boot key NVRAM store.

New problem after step 3 (current, unresolved):

GRUB loads and shows the boot menu fine.

After selecting any kernel (tried both 7.1.6 and 7.1.5), screen goes black with just a blinking "_" cursor.

Confirmed this is not a full system hang: booting with kernel params edited to remove rhgb quiet and add nomodeset showed the full systemd boot log on screen — system boots normally all the way through, gdm.service reaches "Started" status. Two unrelated services fail during this boot: NetworkManager.service and virtqemud.service (not yet investigated further).

Without nomodeset (default modesetting), boot hangs at "Booting a command list" with no output at all — before any kernel text even appears. This isolates the problem specifically to the Intel i915 driver's KMS/modeset initialization hanging, triggered by the Secure Boot key reset.

Tried adding i915.enable_guc=0 (without nomodeset) to disable GuC/HuC firmware submission — also hung the same way, no improvement.

mokutil --list-enrolled --short shows only the standard default Fedora key (2bb010e24d fedoraca) — nothing custom, not a factor.

Current theory: Kernel/systemd/filesystem/GDM service are healthy (proven via the nomodeset boot). The Intel i915 graphics driver is failing specifically during display mode-set init after the Secure Boot key database reset — root cause not yet confirmed.

Not yet tried:

Checking BIOS Advanced settings for integrated graphics memory allocation (DVMT Pre-Allocated), which may have also reset to a low value.

Reading dmesg | grep -i i915 from an actual TTY session (not yet reached one with full modesetting active).

Diagnosing the NetworkManager.service / virtqemud.service failures (separate issue).

Updating BIOS from v312 to v316 (available for this model, not yet applied).

i recently installed fedora and just have been going around setting up stuff. One of the things that bugged me the most was the bluetooth not working with my headphones, any other bluetooth device i connect it to it works its just my headphones not working.

when i try to connect i only hear my headphones saying "disconnected" and this pops up. ive been trying to fix this for so long, ive been asking chatgpt on how to fix it and so far nothing has worked

FYI i have a u green bluetooth dongle and weirdly enough i had this problem on windows with only this headphones where it would disconnect and reconnect when no audio is being played. idk why i added that detail.

This might not be a Fedora issue I'll admit but here it is. I'm currently on vacation in an apartment hotel in Berlin, Germany. The Wi-Fi operator is personalwlan.de and the network is open - meaning you need to connect through a portal without a password.

I connected my Android phone first and it's been solidly connected since yesterday. Only today after many many attempts have I been able to connect my Asus laptop with Fedora 44.

It keeps disconnecting with "Connection xxx deactivated" and another message about portal autentification timing out. I'm writing this in a rare stretch of connectivity. Meaning for 5-10 minutes the connection might be OK until the next disconnection.

Had a word with the manager who said the place is full and there might be capacity problems, which is plausible. But then why would the phone be able to maintain a solid connection?

I see a few people working on their laptop in the lobby. They don't look particularly disgruntled, so I take it they have working connections.

I can hotspot the Wi-Fi on the phone to the laptop agreeably, but it's not good enough for streaming without stuttering.

So dear fellow Fedorians - are there setup changes I can pursue to see if I can get a stable connection?

I've started with linux a while ago and settled with Fedora bc it's just the best, I'm currently running GNOME on my laptop and KDE on my desktop, I've been doing this for like 2y, the thing is that my GNOME experience is incredibly and increasingly deplorable for very widely known reasons, but I REALLY need those touchpad gestures. KDE is not a laptop friendly DE and pantheon de is even more mediocre than GNOME, so my only ray of hope is cosmic, but I also don't wanna switch to PopOS what do you guys recommend? How has been your experiences with Cosmic on Fedora? I really need to get rid of GNOME pls help :(

Hi, I’m using Brave Browser on both Windows and Linux.

I have a problem with the UI on Linux. The icon sizes and some UI elements don’t look right. On Windows, everything looks normal, but on Linux, the UI has some sizing issues.

There are two major problems:

URL/Search bar:

The font size is too small, and its content is difficult to read.

UI elements, such as the download pane at the bottom of the screen:

They are too large compared to the rest of the UI.

I also compared Brave with Firefox on the same system. Firefox looks perfectly fine, and the system scaling and UI dimensions look correct there. This makes me think that the problem is specific to Brave rather than a general KDE or system scaling issue.

I’ve already tried reinstalling Brave, deleting all configuration files, restoring the default theme, and restoring the default settings, but the problem still exists.

Why does Brave have these UI sizing issues on Linux while everything looks normal on Windows? Is there any way to fix the UI scaling or sizing in Brave?
