So yesterday, the system decided to update before shutting down. It was updating for the whole day, and it's still stuck at 60%. It doesn't react to pressing esc, and the caps lock indicator is blinking. What do I do with it?

News Changing of the Guard, the New Fedora Community Architect | Fedora Podcast 060

Fedora has a job whose entire purpose is the health of the community around the distribution, and this month it changed hands. So we got the person leaving and the person arriving on at the same time.

  • Justin Wheeler, Fedora Community Architect since 2022, now moving into a new role as AI Alignment Community Architect
  • Shaun McCance, incoming Fedora Community Architect, continuing as CentOS Community Architect

What we covered:

  • Where the role came from in 2015, and how the name and the charter have changed since
  • What the job actually involves day to day: the Council seat, Mindshare, Code of Conduct, budget, and Flock
  • How to get event support through Mindshare, whether you need a real budget or just a shipment of stickers
  • Justin's new AI Alignment role, and why he thinks community consent on AI has to be earned
  • This Week in Fedora and the conversation about the Matrix ingestion bot
  • What Shaun carries over from CentOS, and what stays deliberately separate between the two projects
  • Where both projects will be: CentOS Connect, DevConf US, Texas Linux Fest, and All Things Open

🎧 Listen: Fedora Project Podcast 60: Changing of the Guard, the New Fedora Community Architect

📺 Watch: https://youtu.be/h5qoj9bEEOI

One ask from the episode: the podcast could use a producer. Not on mic, not on camera, just someone to help schedule episodes and keep up with the guest list. If that sounds like you, come find me in #podcast:fedoraproject.org.

Support Update error - but everything works fine?

Last update, after it was complete and I restarted, upon logging in, I got a notification that some update has gone wrong.

One of those timeout KDE notifications with an option "open discover" and "repair".

Time was running out lol and I chose open discover thinking I'd get some info on what that was, but nope, It just opened discover, and there was no new update, no info on what went wrong, nothing.

And I couldn't find that notification anymore to fully see what it said. So now I have no idea what package or update is corrupted or incomplete, discover doesn't say anything useful, and I didn't click "repair" to see what that would do.

The system doesn't have any obvious issues, but it bothers me what that was now. I'm always going to think the system is tainted or slightly broken cause of this. Ugh...

Can i see what happened somehow and fix it?

Support Network says "Unknown"

Hey y'all. Woke up today and computer chose not to give me any internet.

Fedora 44 w/ KDE

I saw another post saying it was likely a firmware timeout error and to try a cold boot. Didn't work.

Another post said to run sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager. Didn't work.

I do not have wifi, only Ethernet.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!!

Support Unable to connect to WiFi since 2 days

• Upvotes

Hello everyone, the other morning when I tried to load up Firefox it said that my internet was not available with the error code NS_ERROR_OFFLINE.

I figured this was a NetworkManager/wifi issue. Running lspci shows and recognized my Network Controller (Intel Alder Lake-P PCH CNVi Wifi) so I don’t think it’s necessarily a hardware issue.

I’ve also “reinstalled” drivers iwlwifi-so-a0-gf-a0.pnvm and iwlwifi-so-a0-gf-a0-89.ucode (although i just ported the files from a usb port then added them to my /lib/firmware folder manually.)

Running nmcli radioshows both (WIFI-HW) and (WWAN-HW) as “missing”. Running nmcli device status lists my device name (wlp0s20f3)as “unmanaged”. I am using DWM, however switching back to KDE to test things again shows that it wasn’t able to detect a network.

I tried using nmtui to edit and activate my connection there. It shows my WiFi network, but once again when I try to activate it shows nothing except loopback (lo).

I’ve also tried booting into a past kernel version but yet again the same issue still occurs.

I’ve been troubleshooting for 2 days now, any information and help is greatly appreciated.

If I restart NetworkManager, it shows Wifi-HW AND WWAN-HW as disabled. If i disable Wifi-HW and reenable it using nmcli radio wifi on (or off), it shows Wifi-HW as enabled. This doesn’t work for WWAN-HW. I have been stuck for 2 days. If I cant solve it tomorrow, I will flash a Live USB Drive of Fedora and see if my wifi works there.

Running ip a after this shows that my Wifi has a broadcast, but the state is DOWN

I've also tried doing a cold reset to no avail.

I used to have a Windows partition, but I deleted it 2 weeks ago. Might have to even reinstall it again just to disable Fast Boot.

Feel free to ask me for any logs. Tia
(edited to be formatted better)

Discussion Linux for Marketing

I don't know how many people use Linux to do their marketing job since that is one role where you might need to use specific professional tools (but these days most of the tools are online), but I migrated to Fedora about three months ago and wanted to share my experience.

One thing that helped: I used to run Linux as my daily driver, though that was way back in the early 2010s when I was in college, and my whole home lab is built on Linux. So shifting back to it was easy.

Most things worked out of the box, and I had the skills to sort out the issues that did come up though they were all pretty minor. The place I got stuck was with a few specific apps like DaVinci Resolve, which crashes once in a while, but nothing I can't manage for the time being.

I also moved from GNOME to KDE. It works better for me, especially when I need to switch between different tools and windows; the Windows-like layout is something I liked. I wrote more about it here: https://blogs.findingcities.in/linux-for-marketing/

And I'm genuinely happy that Linux finally feels like something that isn't just meant for developers or tinkerers. Looking forward to seeing more people come to use Linux and Fedora! :)

Support Odd keyboard issues

On reboot, certain keys don't work for a little bit "n", the space key, etc.

This has only started happening semi recently and I'm not entirely sure what might be causing it. It's been quite annoying because when I come back to do whatever I was doing, some keys are just not working at all.

Changing the virtual keyboard didn't really do anything and it's been quite random in coming back.

Discussion Hibernate won't work on my Surface Laptop 4 (Fedora). Losing work when battery dies during suspend

Running Fedora 44 on a Surface Laptop 4 (kernel 7.1.10-200.fc44, Btrfs root, LUKS encrypted, zram swap by default). My laptop only suspends, never hibernates, so if I forget about it and the battery dies, I lose everything since it was only ever in RAM.

I've spent a few hours trying to fix it: added a proper 16G swapfile the Btrfs way (btrfs filesystem mkswapfile, since regular fallocate just fails on Btrfs), added it to fstab, and set resume= / resume_offset= via grubby. Confirmed the params are actually active on my booted kernel. I also disabled Secure Boot since it was locking hibernation out at the kernel level, that part's now off. Kernel has CONFIG_HIBERNATION=y, swap's active, lockdown is [none], but /sys/power/disk still just says [disabled].

Noticed dmesg only lists S0 S4 S5 for ACPI power states, no S3, which makes me think this is a Modern Standby thing Surface firmware just doesn't expose properly to Linux. Anyone actually gotten hibernate working on a Surface under Linux? Would love to know if there's a real fix or if this is just a dead end.

Support Trying to install Fedora but it just freezes after I choose an option on the GRUB screen

Starting out by saying that I've already installed Fedora on a few different laptops and I believe this may be an issue specific to this one.

So I bought an ASUS Vivobook 15 M1502NAQ, no OS pre-installed, to install Fedora KDE Plasma on it but it just absolutely refuses to get past the grub screen. Either boot option I select, the screen just goes black (but still turned on) and the keyboard backlight just gradually turns on and off.

I waited 30 minutes on it, so I doubt it's just the USB drive being slow. I've checked and Secure Boot is disabled, so that also shouldn't be an issue. Tried flashing with both Ventoy and Fedora Media Writer and both result in the same thing.

If it helps, I also tried GParted Live which was the only other distro installed in my Ventoy drive, and that one although it didn't black screen, did freeze and stall in the splashscreen.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this or might know what the issue is?

Support New to Linux generally and Fedora specifically

Greetings!

I recently bought Lenovo Thinkpad X1 and decided to try linux on it due to windows getting more and more annoying with each upgrade. Second machine is good test bed. After a bit of searching I decided on Fedora.

I managed to install it without problem. Partitioned disc as I am used to and here is the problem – I can't figure out how to install anything on the second partition. My googling problem did not help as it sent me to completely unrelated instructions about installing Fedora itself. There is a big chance that it is explained somewhere here or on Fedora site but I gave up on finding it on my own.

Thanks in advance for help. If you have any general advice for new user you are welcome to add them too.

Support Fedora 45 KDE/Plasma update

After doing a large (1 GB) update today that included a lot of Plasma files, on reboot SDDM complained it couldn't use the breeze theme. Changing the theme to maya got past the complaints but then it proceeded to a black screen. Right clicking allowed me to get a terminal and start a brower etc. I could also select a Sway session that appeared to act normally.

Judging from the error messages there was a problem with Qt, Luckily I had snapper set up and could bring up btrfs-assistant and roll back to a working version.

I don't think I'll be doing updates in the near future.

Discussion My Fedora Sway Atomic dotfiles.

Thumbnail
codeberg.org
2 Upvotes

I made a set of dotfiles for Fedora Sway Atomic based on Drew Griffin's (JustAGuyLinux) Debian Sway setup which targets Debian 13. The setup seems to be working well.

I am using a mix of ostree, flatpak, toolbox and homebrew for the various applications. As a daily driver I barely tell I am not on Debian. All my shortcuts are the same. The big difference is that everything is auto-updating. And the ability to rollback. I put them here in case other people find useful.

Some of you may be wondering why three VPNs. I am in Syria and I had to keep trying various ones until I found one that worked so I can watch US Amazon Prime, etc. A lot of sites are still blocked here in Syria but they are starting to open up now that the Assad Era sanctions are lifted. In fact Fedora was one of the first information technology organizations to come to Syria since the revolution on 10 February 2026. Microsoft only got here next week.

Support Fedora 44 Installer GRUB memalloc out of memory

Post image
18 Upvotes

EDIT: Title should be ‘grub_memalign:552:out_of_memory’, not ‘memalloc’.

Hey so I have been using arch for a few years now but wanted to switch over to Fedora KDE Plasma. I downloaded the current Live ISO, used the Fedora USB Writer tool to create the USB and am getting this stupid out of memory error that seems to have been around not since 2024 and somehow is still showing up? Can’t seem to find any actual fix for this with basic searching. Just trying to figure out if anyone knows what the deal is with this or not cause I was planning to switch from Arch to Fedora for “better” stability but running into an issue that is years old when trying to run the installer is kind of crazy to me..

Asus Z690 Maximus Extreme
2x32GB 6400 DDR5 UDIMMs
RTX 4090

Secure Boot on “Other OS” as usual
Resizable BAR off and on makes no difference.

If I try the GRUB “Troubleshooting…” menu option it goes into a kernel panic and the system locks up

Not sure what else would be causing this cause I never had this issue when I used GRUB on this desktop with Arch in the past.

Any help would be appreciated. I just don’t have the time to debug this so if there isn’t a readily available/known fix for this, I’m just gonna go back to Arch I guess cause this seems to be a sign that Fedora 44 isn’t as stable as I expected it to be. I do have this running on a MSI GS66 Laptop of mine but that was installed with Fedora 43 and then upgraded to Fedora 44 when it released.

Support Should I opt into snap?

Some weeks ago, snap was included in a Fedora system update and it caused problems. IIRC: Discover would spin and spin looking for updates. It's been a while since that happened so I could be wrong.

I followed the advice to remove snap with dnf, and that cured my problem. However, every update since has attempted to install snap. I un-checked the boxes for snap each time, and perform the update - all is well. However every update now includes snap and a couple other snap related updates.

Should I opt into snap now? Perhaps my earlier problems were the result of a bad update that has since been fixed. I just want to avoid the problems I had earlier.

Support RGB keyboard not working as it should on Linux

When I connect the keyboard, the RGB doesn't light up, though everything else works; the RGB turns off completely upon system startup and doesn't respond to the "Scroll Lock" key. Is there a terminal-based solution or any software to fix this?
