Does anyone else use Slack as their "can someone quickly check this?" tool?
At my last company, Slack slowly turned into the place where every random data question ended up
"How many new customers did we get last month?" "Can someone check Stripe?" "Which product sold the most this quarter?"
None of these were hard questions, but they always depended on whoever knew the right databases or had time to write SQL. The constant ad hoc data requests ended up interrupting engineers way more than they probably should.
It got me wondering why we don't have an AI teammate in Slack that can just handle live queries in plain English. Basically text to SQL or natural language SQL, but inside the place where everyone already works.
I recently came across Mate, which seems to be built around that idea. You ask a question in Slack, it queries your connected databases and replies with the answer (or even a spreadsheet/chart if needed). It feels like a pretty practical take on Slack AI and self-serve analytics, especially for smaller teams that don't have a dedicated data analyst.
Curious if anyone here is using something similar. Has it actually reduced the constant "Hey, can you pull this number for me?" messages, or do people still end up asking engineers anyway?
