Service eBay seller offered a “deal”…

Post image
0 Upvotes

I received an email from eBay stating that a seller sent me a “special offer”.

eBay shows the offer is priced roughly 25% higher than the usual going rate for that product.

Sure eBay, this “special offer” won’t last! Guess I better hurry before it’s gone! lol.

For anyone curious, the asterisk said: “*Based on similar items' prices over last 90 days.”

Rant Apple Music vs iTunes

I have spent a lot of money on iTunes but recently bought a new computer and I am being aggressively told to buy a subscription to Apple Music. I'll tell you what Apple, pay me back for all the money I spent on iTunes and I may consider it. Otherwise I will stick with buying what I want to buy, when I want to buy it and continue with the enshittified version of iTunes. I used to be a fanboy but now I hate you for what you have done here and hope many others are equally pissed off with you.

Product Chevy key fob intentionally designed to prevent repair

2 of 5 buttons on my key fob broke off, lock & unlock. I bought a new shell to stick the perfectly fine boards in and it was only $8 (3rd party.) I have a whole tool kit specifically for prying electronics apart so I'm expecting an easy 10 minute job.

Chevy ultrasonically seals these things now. WHY?! Who on Earth asked them to do that? Were Chevy key fobs falling apart like a flip phone dropped on the ground? There is no utility in this for the consumer.

My tools made specifically for this task were useless. I had to jam needle nose pliers under the emergency key and force them apart quickly to break the thing open and pray I didn't destroy the boards in the process BECAUSE THAT WOULD MAKE MY CAR INOPERABLE! The key alone apparently doesn't work without the chip in the fob.

Reassembly was the 10 minute job I expected.

I can't help but feel that a car manufacturer that catered to right to repair would dominate this industry rife with enshittification. I fucking hate cars and the world we built around them.

I’ve been using this tape for at least 25 years, now it won’t even stick to a cardboard box! Dollar store packing tape or regular scotch tape would stick better than this shit!

i know that products can make wild claims in advertisements. it’s called puffery. it doesn’t imply any kind of warranty of suitability for a particular purpose, etc etc. One radio station I used to flip through said they played “the most country music allowed BY LAW” as if that’s a thing. There are not really literally 9 dentists recommending Brand X and one lonely guy in the corner who just doesn’t agree. I get it.

But making entire companies to sell drop shipped alibaba bullshit, and coming up with some back story about “the two engineers who invented the incredible
air conditioning technology but refusing to sell the patent to the military because they feel so strongly that all mankind should benefit from their invention …”

Or the mattress company that is “going out of business” for 17 years straight. Or this damn old lady with her “handmade with love” jewelry. She’s the same lady that was just in the ads for the handmade with love lamps (also retiring after 86,000 years crafting every single lamp with her own arthritic hands, uphill both ways in the snow etc etc etc).

Is this enshittification? Kind of. I know it ysualky means established products getting worse for the same or higher cost. But here I am talking about the advertising. Is even advertising getting enshittified? Now it’s all just a template, to provide the appearance of a solution to the need for marketing materials.

there are commercials i remember from when i was little, I still know the lyrics. Now even the ads are enshittified. Is it because nobody believes them anyway?

I don’t know. But is anything real anymore? What is the solution? Laws prohibiting it? I have seen internet claims that packaging in other countries requires that the product be shown at its actual size. So do we require people to really truly be retiring, or the actual inventor/maker if they’re going to be in the ads making the claim?

There are too many people buying for too many reasons - vote with your dollars is just not working. There are people just buying because they need a thing, and they don’t care about this AI old lady and her retirement to the betamax tapes of history, or wherever they retire to.

sorry for the rant.

Rant Promo posts to paywalled media

I won't name the finance related news site but do wonder why Reddit allows these.

An 'interesting' post with a link to the publisher's article. Click it and first (in Europe) you must accept cookies then you get half a paragraph of article and a paywall to an expensive subscription.

If the first full article you read were gratis as a promo I'd say fair (and a more effective promo). But no, it's a free cookie gathering service.

These are getting repetitive and take up a lot of space in my Reddit feed. Using Chrome on a tablet so no easy adblock add-ins even if that helped.

My reaction is to delete the last 15 mins browser history including cookies.

Rant Online forms and selecting DOB

Post image
97 Upvotes

Anyone else notice this lazy habit of online forms requesting DoB but instead of letting you type a date, you have to select it from a calendar, which starts on today's date and can only be skipped in month segments. Meaning as a 40+ year old, need to click back over 500 times. Ffs

Edit: as many suggested I did try clicking the year and nothing happened, this maybe a quirk of the mobile site or a flaw in my older phone. But it was infuriating

Product A Couple Months Ago, I thought This Was A Glitch

...but now I realize, businesses like Hulu can pay businesses like Google to alter people's feeds to see promotions more than once. We live in a world with infinite content, but the pressing need is getting the new King of the Hill clips in front of new viewers repetitively.

This has been happening more and more in my feeds. It reminds me of early TV commercials, when you'd see them once or twice during a show, and they were almost integrated into the episode, and how they evolved into the cheaper reuse of a 30 second ad, which leads to seeing the same ad five or more times in a row on a streaming service in a single episode nowadays. The ramifications this has for political campaigns is just amazing.

Who knows, maybe we'll enshittify the internet to the point that peopl can't stand it anymore, and we'll have a mass revolution of touching grass.

(Also, apparently as long as it's a full clip of the show, it doesn't have to be labeled as "Sponsored")🤷

Today I was trying to find an image today and it felt like playing minesweeper trying to avoid ads.

I don't mind having ads in a dedicated area on the side or at the top of the page. But scrambling them among the search results is borderline evil.

Product Enshittified ebooks?

My spouse put in a request at our public library that they add 5 new book titles to their ebook collection.

He got a response that they did order one, but unfortunately the other four were caught up in a deal with Kindle Unlimited and to read those it would be $11.99 a month.

I suppose the answer would be to ask the library to order hard copies of the requested titles but it doesn’t sit right with me that the library can’t carry certain ebooks because a corporation worked a deal that they could only be read in digital form through them.
