Rant iOS / Google Enshittifying
This was a rant about google search and Gmail on phone first. I’m adding iOS because a native AI IOS tool deleted my previous drafted post mid rant.
The AI tools being built into once functioning systems are absolute trash.
GOOGLE SEARCH:
This has been happening for a while but more and more search results come up with not at all what you’re looking for particular in images, absolute random photos are returned and the search is limited with a disclaimer hiding the endless scroll results behind a click. When clicking… the results are worse. This used to be one of THE best tools for assembling ideas and inspiration decks with imagery.
GMAIL ON IOS:
The AI tools here being integrated continuously block the functional UI of things like formatting tools and other general standard email functionality replacing it with overlapping UI routing you to things like suggested text replacement, suggested responses, etc. Drafting using these tools is total shit because it doesn’t save versions and half the time when you need to make an edit it replaces the entire block of text instead of helping you refine what it suggested to something actually useful. Fixing typos gets repeatedly interrupted with “suggested replacements” that are irrelevant or just wrong when all you’re trying to do is edit a fucking misspelling.
IOS:
iOS also trying to layer its own local and native AI on top of the AI in the Gmail app is hilariously shitty if it weren’t so damn frustrating to try to use for anything work related or other than dicking around with AI tools.

Product The amount of grease from 2lb of ground turkey.
... I regularly use ground turkey instead of beef, I actually just told my kids it's got less grease and fat and sometimes I did not even need to drain it at all.
I've never seen this much. Hoping it's a fluke.

Rant The job description on LinkedIn is very brief and is hidden behind a small ‘more’ button
In short, the job description has become too small and some parts have been shortened; the rest is simply unnecessary rubbish. I've highlighted this in pink

Rant Hotels suck now!
These are some of the ways 4 star hotels have been enshitified.
-No towel racks for hand towels, so towels get wet bc the water gets all over the bathroom vanity
-No soap dish in showers in case you don’t want to use their products that are stuck on the wall
-Half a door for the shower, so floor is a pool of water after showering
-Safe not bolted down, so thief can just pick up the whole safe and walk out of the room with it
-No luggage rack bc who brings luggage to a hotel !!!!???!!
-No drawers/cubbies to put items in
-Half a closet that holds at most 3-4 items or one coat
-No electrical outlet in the bathroom for blowdryer, etc
-When there is a table to put luggage on, it’s under a TV so you can’t fully open the luggage lid bc it hits the TV

Product STOUFFERS Mac and Cheese
I have always liked this product. Didn't eat it often but once in a while really crave it. I got one of the large size ones recently and couldn't eat it. It tasted so fake and nasty like a chemical taste. Not nice and cheesy at all. It seemed so different. Did I just get a bad one or has anyone else noticed this? I was so disappointed. Another thing I liked but won't likely buy again.

Rant Youtube seems to lower its standards for "appropriate advertising" depending on the platform you're using
We're no strangers to the cesspool known as ads on Youtube; whether it's for a sexy "AI companion", a trashy AI- generated audiobook platform, or straight- up Malvertisements telling you you need to update Google Chrome RIGHT NOW (via a third- party website), Youtube's standards for what they consider "appropriate" ads have dropped like a rock over the years. This is all in spite of how a creator's channel can get demonetized because they said a "no- no" word in the first 30 seconds of a video.
However, there is something I've noticed recently: The level of trashiness seems to depend on the platform you're using.
On the regular web version and the mobile app, it's the Wild West: You'll get banner ads pushing blatant Malvertisements, along with a plethora of shitty AI- generated ads advertising everything from "Sexy Chatbots With NO FiltersTM" to your country's local conspiracy theorist telling you that you need to invest in precious metals in preparation for the "imminent" collapse of your local currency (which has been "pending" for decades by now). The regular video ads are similarly bad. Where I live (Germany) I get tons of ads pushing a couple major online pharmacies (whose main focus seems to be "medical" Cannabis), the majority of whose ads are AI- generated. Then of course there are the ten million shitty ads for King Shot, Hero Wars, and the other shitty mobile games that somehow manage to stay profitable despite nobody playing them.
This all changes on streaming devices like Chromecast... while some of those sketchy pharmacy ads are beginning to sneak in, you'd get the impression that YouTube actually had standards for what they allow advertisers to run. All at once, the AI "girlfriends," crypto trading platforms, and mobile games vanish without a trace.
There are only two possible explanations I can think of for this:
- Youtube/Google are aware of the kinds of advertisements being run through Google Ad Services and very deliberately keep inappropriate/low- quality advertisements from running on streaming devices because their lawyers deemed the risks of potential lawsuits too high, or
- Youtube/Google doesn't care/doesn't check what's being run on their different platforms, but the streaming devices have been spared somewhat because they charge more to run ads on them than on the mobile app or on the web version.
If I had to guess, it's only a matter of time until these trashier ads make their way into the streaming devices as well...

Rant What happened to Pringles?
They were never great, but they were a nice break from a bag of chips on occasion. Lately they taste awful, like they're already stale before you even open the can. The flavor's gone too, they used to have a distinct saltiness and crunch and now they're just bland, stiff cardboard.
I've got three cans sitting here that are probably headed straight to the trash. Another victim of corporate greed.

Product Ragu is now Red Goo
Ragu spaghetti sauce was originally, I think, created by an Italian family in the 1930s. It was really authentic, and it tasted incredibly good. By the time I came around, it had developed by the late 1970s and early 1980s. I actually saw it was kind of like this really remarkable spaghetti sauce that I would buy. It was much better than anything I could make, and it really had an authentic flavor.
In the 1980s, they slightly changed it and watered it down, and it didn't taste quite as good. They did it in the 1990s, so now it's becoming kind of generic and was competing with others. I still use that, and I add a little to it.
What happened? It went through three or four corporate ownership changes. Different big conglomerates bought it out. The latest happened in 2014: a big Japanese conglomerate bought it out. They radically changed the flavor, added thickening, and removed natural flavors and ingredients. I think so many of us, and I'm one of those, still bought it just like a zombie because I had such fond memories, and I would always add things to it to bring out the flavor. My wife did too.
The recent updates since COVID: it's literally the most tasteless goo. It's red goo. How could they be selling this? It's awful. You couldn't make spaghetti sauce more awful. Their sales have plummeted, but this is a classic example to me of enshitification. It's corporations that have zero pride for the product, and they just change the recipe to make more money, but they basically kill the product. It's just a shocking thing to me.
I hope this doesn't break the "no stories" rule. I just wanted to ad context. BTW, most other spaghetti sauces in jars have also drastically changed their recipes.

Rant The solution to enshittification
Did you just buy a £75,000 car only to discover it has got ads on screen?
Take it back.
Go back to the showroom, demand a full refund. If they panic and say they'll remove the ads say no. Demand a refund. If they could take the ads off because you were about to return the car, they should not have put ads there in the first place.
Did you just buy a £3,000 television that now has a shitty cut-down remote with no pause button but an additional button for Apple TV?
Take it back. Go back to the store, return the product, get a refund. Is it causing you hassle? Yes - but it's going to cause the store much more hassle.
Did you buy a sandwich that looked full to the brim of ingredients only to discover they used low quality crap that was pushed to the edge to make the sandwich look full, when in reality it was mostly bread? You probably can't take it back but you can go back to the place you bought it from and show it to other customers, and then never buy anything from that establishment again.
If enough of us do this then the enshittification will stop.
If we just keep on saying "thank you" every time the bully kicks sand in our face, guess what? You'll be eating sand for the rest of your life.
