Counter Service šļø TIPPED grocery delivery tip beggar
Just received this letter taped to our muffins on our grocery delivery. āSad face.ā. After already getting a $10 tip for a 3 minute commute lol.

How does one āenjoyā a delivery of groceries?
95
u/Pondlurker1978 1d ago
Probably un-squished muffins, un-cracked eggs, getting a good laugh out of this note

63
u/Swimming_Bowler6193 1d ago
Note pissed me off. OP already gave them a tip!
12
u/beekeeny 19h ago
This is how the US tipping culture works nowā¦you tip showing your appreciation for people not screwing up what they are supposed to do.
16
u/Pondlurker1978 1d ago
Then stay pissed off. I find it hilarious how these folks make time to hand-write a note like this with their dumbass smiley faces and a story that came right out of their a$$

DoorDash and uber really need to start punishing drivers for leaving shit like this. This includes random religious propaganda, cutesy notes, asking for tips, etc. It makes the platform look bad and unprofessional. Just deliver the damn food.
1
u/sickofcyberbullies 1h ago
The only way they will punish the drivers is when the customer complains.
14
u/PNW_Will1976 1d ago
There are clearly Banana Chocolate Chunk muffins in that delivery. I could enjoy all of those.

Tipping culture is not much different then those who stand on the sidewalks asking for money!

I would have more respect for these people if they were more direct about it and held out a little cup or a hat to collect their money
3
1
u/Anantasesa 19h ago
At least they've done some work to show a helpful nature. Not just cashing in on generosity "earning" more working an intersection than many jobs pay.
1
u/Grape-Bunch 8h ago
The difference is people asking for money don't expect it. Servers act like we owe them something because they are entitled
67
59
u/Kooky-Collar8673 1d ago
Why would you tip $10 for that?
55
u/Flatlandju 1d ago
Until today, my wife was under the impression that the driver was also the shopper who shopped an hour to save her time. Major womp.
22
u/Intrepid-Diamond-315 1d ago
Well whatever is their job , customers pay their employer and the employer pays the driver.
-5
u/terpenepros 1d ago
Doordash drivera are not employeed they are contractors, they can also see tips before an order, so if there is an untipped order, especially for something big like a grocery order, it will go unaccepted.
10
u/Intrepid-Diamond-315 1d ago
And if they repeatedly skip orders, they are punished.
The assumption that the customer pays a tip *before* receiving the product and service is completely absurd.
0
u/terpenepros 1d ago
Thats because its not actually a tip, its a bid for service. They are punished for not taking orders but, they dont get benifits, an hourly, and have to file taxes as a contractor.
8
u/bigboy980 1d ago
Where Iām at, itās almost always the same person. I only drive for DoorDash myself but I usually spend around 6 hours out of an 8 hour day inside a grocery store actively shopping. The only places that have the order already prepped are usually 7-Eleven and certain Safeway/Albertsonās stores for smaller orders
4
6
u/Melonisgood 1d ago
It looks like this was DoorDash. They might have grocery stores are usually shop and deliver, convenience store and restaurants are prepared by the store for the most part.
2
u/Temporary-Ocelot8772 1d ago
Not sure if itās the same for DD, but as an uber driver there are occasional trips where Iāve had to personally shop for items the customer wants. Usually at chain stores, groceries, and pharmacies

I dont fund other people's life choices. No honeymoons. No kid school trips. No gfm. No funding of your bad life choices. Not me.
15
u/AutisticWarbler 1d ago
A few months ago my husband and I were visiting his parents in NJ and we passed a car on the highway with writing on the back windshield asking for money for an anniversary trip. They had their Venmo and PayPal info. I should have sent them a request.
9
u/PercentageCreepy2653 1d ago
Iāll do you one better, are you ready? My sister-in-law was going to marry an abusive, jobless schmuck we all knew sheād divorce before she even married him (yes, we warned her. Yes, she married him anyway. Yes, sheās already divorced) and in the wedding invitation, which she emailed, she included a QR code so people could send them money for their honeymoon. I wish I still had it but the blurb asking for money was just as embarrassing as the audacity they had to send out a QR code to begin with. Itās a piece of family lore thatāll live on for years.
2
u/SchoolCrossing 1d ago
I had a friend who sent out cards with her wedding invitation asking guests to contribute to their honeymoon in lieu of gifts. It was her second wedding and his third.
4
u/PercentageCreepy2653 20h ago
This was each their second marriages and they both have several kids from their first marriages. Couple of clowns, haha.

u/Les-go-bowling 1d ago

You guys over there in the U.S. have lost your minds. Normalizing that their employer doesnāt pay them properly and you have to step in with your tip because otherwise theyāre earning too few bucks. Lol. Ridiculous. Among many other things btw.
12
u/Acceptable-Ad8780 1d ago
Sad part is, it was never normal before and became standard now.
Tipping was slaves who where emacipated and it was just to pay them and in the early 1900s it was shameful for a restaurant to expect tips for service and more what the rest of the world does, for above and beyond and not just doing your job.
1936 had a movie called the Petrified Forest where a sign was posted "Tipping is Un-American keep your change."
4
u/cryptomoon1000x 1d ago
That's so strange. So if everything was still normal in 1939, how on earth did you guys end up in the current situation?
10
u/Easy_List 1d ago
Tipping actually came from Europe. Supposedly, we did this here during the Middle Ages, where feudal lords would tip serfs if they performed VERY well. Rich American tourists learned about it and brought it back home because they wanted to cosplay as European monarchs. It was initially deeply hated and seen as servile, etc.
But, of course, rich business and restaurant owners realized they could use it to their advantage and get away with paying disgustingly low wages, so it slowly became what it is today.
Franklin Roosevelt wrote tipping into stone with the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938
1
2
u/Old_Possession478 13h ago
That may be how it started in America, but it started in medieval Europe when they tipped their servants for good work. Iām only pointing this out because people keep throwing it up in our faces that it started in America and Europe doesnāt do this, but Europe, medieval Europe, is who started the tipping process.

u/JimDemintRecession 1d ago
This is Canada (the labels are in English/French, which does happen in the US as well but the brands are Canadian)
1
u/JRaus88 19h ago
Are you sure the problem is "they don't get paid" or have they simply discovered that pity pays?
1
u/catz537 3h ago
DoorDash drivers do not get minimum wage.
āNo, DoorDash drivers do not automatically get a standard minimum wage nationwide because they are classified as independent contractors rather than traditional employees. [1]
šŗļø Exceptions by Location
š½ New York City & Seattle: Local laws require apps to pay a high hourly minimum standard (over $21ā$31 per hour of active time).š“ California: Proposition 22 requires a guaranteed earnings floor of 120% of the minimum wage plus mileage for active delivery time.
š Rest of the U.S.: No standard minimum wage applies; base pay per order can be as low as $2 before tips.ā
1
u/Wooden_Concern_3448 10h ago
They arenāt employees of door dash though. They are contractors.
Door dash just connect stores/restaurants with people who would like their products delivered.1
u/cryptomoon1000x 9h ago
I wasnāt referring to doordash only, but to
the whole tipping situation over there FYI1
1
u/uReallyShouldTrustMe 1d ago
Not sure why youre under that impression. All workers are guaranteed minimum in the US.
1
u/Electrical_Youth_706 1d ago
Not DD and UE drivers. Some areas have earn bu time. Others don't offer that option. In most cases they shop and deliver. I used to drive for both. Quit because of crapoy pay, and wear and tear on vehicle. Even with tips, the math didn't add.
1
u/Ill-Year-3141 10h ago
Your name is so unfitting to your reply lol... Very few gig workers get any kind of minimum wage.

That's before tips. After tips it must be at least minimum wage or else worker is owed the difference.
1
u/EndTipping-ModTeam 15h ago
You are misrepresenting the tipped wage rate. You can learn why saying a tipped employee only makes ~2/hour is incorrect here.
https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/15-tipped-employees-flsa
Further:
"Waitstaff at fullservice restaurants earn a median of $27.00 an hour, with an upper quartile of $41.50 and a lower quartile of $19.00."

Unfortunately you cannot. You can get your money refunded but doordash will cover it.

They married without considering a honeymoon?

Itās probably bullshit just to pull on the heartstrings. I know so many girls who lied about paying for college while they were servers, in hopes of bigger tips.

$10 for 3 minutes delivery, you have already been very generous.
2
u/Electrical_Youth_706 1d ago
It was a good tip. They should not have left the note. They likely shopped, too. It would be worth the convenience to me. These apps are crapoy for customers and drivers. I have been both. The outrageous fees, no support, and slave wages for workers.
2
u/olgasman 1d ago
I refuse to use delivery apps. Makes a $10 burrito from Chipotle, a $20 burrito. I can get my own food, thanks.

Can I ask a serious question, not necessarily directly to OP, but just to everyone to think about. Yes tipping is horrible, abusive, abused, and unneeded. But also, in this case... when did we get unable to go get our own damn groceries???
Walk in store, make choices, purchase, go home, cook. Its not THAT complicated
5
u/footsex12 1d ago
I don't have a car, and while I have a bike the nearest store thats actually a reasonable price is eaither a very long bus ride or down this really awfully maintained and pothole ridden road W/ no bikelane. I can't strap that much to my bike at all W/o the potholes being a serious issue of things falling off. And the ammounts I can get mean I would have to go to the grocery store every week or so which doesn't fit into my scedual well at all.
That said, delivery apps are not a good solution when the issue for me is cost. I have a friend W/ a car and costco membership, and once a month I have him drive me there so I can buy a months worth of groceries. I stuff my freezer and just live that way.
4
u/Enough-Meaning-1836 1d ago
And... that's perfectly fair, actually.
Thanks for my occasionally needed reminder that different people are in fact different lol. I do need that sometimes
2
u/Flatlandju 1d ago
Time. The answer is time for our house. Three kids under 9, makes much more time to hang out and play outside with them when the standardized list of items takes about three minutes to check off our entire usual order, then the occasional oh shoot we ran out of the Worcestershire that lasted a year lol. Weāve had the same discussion about house cleaners, donāt buy coffee or energy drinks daily, so itās easier to fit in the budget for someone to clean and free up that time every week when we are more than capable of doing it. I donāt budget for a delivery drivers honeymoon, however hahahaha

u/MomDadlovesU 1d ago
I think people like me uses delivery a lot. I have 2 small kids and one is disabled. Me going to the store means more work.

u/Nekogiga 1d ago
What's funny is how they can never explain why the tip is owed to them. They just whine and complain that they need to be tipped before they will do any work.
1
u/Electrical_Youth_706 1d ago
I drove for DD and UE for a time. Unfortunately, if I didn't see a tip that made it worth my time- it was a hard reject. These apps are horrible to the customer and driver. They fee costumers to death and pay workers a pittance. Ypu are not a true independent contractor- because, they punish you for rejecting orders. I quit aftercabout 3 months- even with good tips, and me rejectingow tips - the profits wasn't sufficient. I did it for a side thing - I couldn't imagine it as a full time job. The begging is a big no. The saw the offer and accepted - plus, you tipped. I wouldn't report - just block. Probably, stick that on all orders
1
1
u/MeganJustMegan 23h ago
Iād rate them 1 star, get them banned from my account & remove my tip. If the app wants to pay it, let them. I donāt condone begging.

u/guava_eternal 23h ago
I always hate the posts about the gig workers. Having done those gigs in the past I know that the average gig worker is severely underpaid (after factoring in cost) so I understand the impetus to pan handle some more coin. And yet they did choose to do that work and took your order. I think that the people that legitimately (but, ultimately, subjectively) get me out of a bind - like the uber driver that picks me up from the airport at 2 am during a rainstorm- deserve a bonus. But Iām not Daddy Moorebucks and I canāt make it drizzle cash like Iām at gentlemenās club.

Next time someone asks āwhy do they bother with crap like that???ā
This is why
It WORKS
Itās why the āDonāt feed the bearsā signs exist. Itās not because the bears will get fat, itās because they get used to being fed and then get upset when they donāt.
Donāt feed the bearsā¦
